Nigeria Police deny smuggling names into Academy admission list

0

The Nigeria Police Force has reacted strongly to a report published by Sahara Reporters on November 10, 2025, alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, “smuggled names” into the Nigeria Police Academy admission list.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police described the publication as false, malicious, and defamatory, calling it “a barefaced lie, a product of irresponsible and unethical journalism.” The statement noted that the report was a “calculated attempt to mislead Nigerians and malign the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force and its leadership.”

According to the Force, the admission process into the Nigeria Police Academy for the 2025/2026 academic session was transparent, merit-based, and strictly guided by due process. It explained that a total of 370 candidates, representing ten per state, were admitted solely on merit after meeting all academic, physical, and character benchmarks required by the Academy.

The statement further clarified that while recommendations from well-meaning Nigerians, leaders, or institutions may be received, such gestures do not influence the selection process. “Under the watch of IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, no name is smuggled, no slot is sold, and no standard is compromised,” the Force stated.

The Police also challenged Sahara Reporters to produce any verifiable evidence supporting its allegations. “The Nigeria Police Force dares Sahara Reporters to produce a single verifiable name from the approved list that does not meet the stipulated admission requirements. Until such evidence is produced, the report remains what it truly is, a baseless fabrication, an act of journalistic blackmail, and a grave defamation of character,” the statement read.

The Force emphasized that the pattern of misinformation from some media outlets is a direct assault on national institutions and could undermine public trust and national security. It warned that spreading falsehoods against the country’s foremost law enforcement agency is not investigative journalism but subversive propaganda intended to create distrust among citizens.

In addition, the statement strongly cautioned Sahara Reporters to desist from publishing false and malicious information against the Police. “Failure of which the Force will actively consult its legal department and explore appropriate legal redress, including defamation proceedings, against Sahara Reporters and any individuals complicit in this calculated misinformation campaign,” it warned.

The public was urged to disregard the report in its entirety as false and mischievous. The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to merit, transparency, accountability, and professionalism, stressing that “no amount of blackmail or falsehood will distract the Force from its sacred duty of protecting lives, property, and the integrity of our nation.”

Wike vows to stop illegal constructions after clash with naval officers in Abuja

0

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has vowed to stop all forms of illegal construction in Abuja, regardless of who is involved. This follows a confrontation on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, between the Minister’s team and officers of the Nigerian Navy during an inspection of unauthorized developments in Gaduwa District, along the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way corridor in the FCT.

Wike, who was on an inspection tour with the Director of Development Control, Town Planner Mukhtar Galadima, visited the site where an ongoing illegal construction was discovered. However, the team was obstructed by naval officers, who claimed they were acting on instructions allegedly given by a former Chief of Naval Staff reportedly building on the land without title documents or Development Control approval.

Speaking after the incident, the Minister made it clear that the FCT Administration would not yield to intimidation or blackmail. He said, “The way we have carried out our job in other areas is the same way it will be done here. He will not carry out this illegal development and land grabbing, simply because he was a former Chief of Naval Staff. I will not allow that.”

Addressing journalists shortly after the standoff, Wike described the action of the military officers as lawless and unacceptable. He emphasized that his administration would ensure that all developments in the FCT comply strictly with the law, adding that no individual, no matter their status, would be allowed to abuse the system.

He said, “I did instruct them [FCTA officials] to make sure that nothing takes place, in as much as they did not have any legal paper in terms of building approval or even acquisition of the land. When they came here, I was informed that the military chased them away. So, today, I was called that the military have taken over the place and I had to come to see things for myself.”

The Minister questioned the use of military personnel to secure what he called a clear case of illegal construction and land grabbing. “It’s really unfortunate, and you heard what the officer said, he was sent by the former Chief of Naval Staff. I don’t understand how somebody who attained that position and he sees that he has a problem, cannot approach my office to explain what is going on. Or simply because he’s a military man, he felt he could use that to intimidate Nigerians. I’m not one of those kinds of persons that will succumb to blackmail or intimidation,” he stated.

Wike further expressed concern over the disregard for established laws guiding land use and development in the capital city. “You can imagine where you cannot even prove that you have the documents. You don’t have the title documents and you don’t have the approval for building. How can we continue to allow lawlessness to prevail in this country? What about those who don’t have the military? What about those who don’t have security?” he queried.

The Minister confirmed that he has contacted the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff regarding the matter, and both have assured him that they will step in to resolve the situation.

Nigeria’s Civil Service migrates to 1Gov Cloud for digital operations

0

The Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation has officially migrated to the homegrown 1Gov Cloud Enterprise Content Management System, marking a major shift in Nigeria’s public service operations toward a fully digital future. The announcement was made by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, OON, mni, who described the event as “a defining day in the history of the Nigerian Public Service.”

The migration represents a critical milestone under the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021–2025 (FCSSIP25), which aims to create a world-class, digital Civil Service that operates with speed, transparency, and efficiency. According to the Head of Service, this move goes beyond technology adoption, as it symbolises the government’s commitment to a paperless, tech-driven system that ensures sustainable governance.

Mrs. Walson-Jack noted that significant groundwork had been done to prepare for this transition. Over the past year, her office created official email addresses for all Civil Servants, with 59,344 already established. She explained that this initiative enhances communication, accountability, and digital integration across the Federal Civil Service. She also highlighted the development of Standard Operating Procedures for common services departments and units, which promote efficiency, uniformity, and standardisation across Ministries and Extra-Ministerial Departments.

Explaining the strategic reasons for adopting the 1Gov Cloud system, the Head of Service identified four main priorities: national sovereignty of data infrastructure, government-wide interoperability, economies of scale, and accelerated digital adoption. The 1Gov Cloud provides all Ministries and Departments with a unified digital backbone, harmonising workflows and enabling seamless communication and collaboration. The platform integrates key features such as GovMail for internal communication, InMail for direct messaging, GovDrive for document management, and GovConference for virtual meetings and online collaborations.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s target of achieving a fully paperless Civil Service by December 31, 2025, Mrs. Walson-Jack stated that this new digital infrastructure will boost transparency, service delivery, and efficiency across the system. She commended Galaxy Backbone Limited, developers and managers of the 1Gov Cloud platform, for their professionalism and commitment to the Nigeria First Policy. She said, “We are transitioning from dependence on foreign technology to a Nigerian-built and Nigerian-owned digital system.”

During the event, a live demonstration showcased the capabilities of the 1Gov Cloud platform. Mrs. Walson-Jack assigned tasks to the Permanent Secretary of the Career Management Office and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Civil Service Matters. She also sent emails to the Permanent Secretaries of Foreign Affairs and Solid Minerals Development, who received and acknowledged the messages in real time, demonstrating the seamless inter-agency communication made possible by the new system.

Sanwo-Olu says Tinubu’s reforms boost State, Local Government funding

0

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, no state governor or local government chairman can complain of inadequate funding, as federal allocations to subnational governments have significantly increased to drive development across the country.

Sanwo-Olu made this known on Tuesday during a one-day public lecture organised by the Arewa Think Tank to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary at the Arewa House in Kaduna State. The lecture, themed “65th Year of Nigeria’s Independence: The Journey So Far with the Renewed Hope Agenda in View,” brought together political leaders, academics, youth groups, and development stakeholders to assess the nation’s progress under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

In his keynote address, the Lagos State governor commended Nigerians for their resilience and optimism despite years of challenges. He explained that President Tinubu’s fiscal reforms have improved the financial outlook of state and local governments.

“Today, that story has changed. Ask any state governor or local government chairman, and they will tell you just how much revenue has surged under the watch of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. There is now more money to do more that benefits the people of Nigeria,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He attributed the improved fiscal position to deliberate policy reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, which are focused on strengthening federalism and empowering states and local councils. According to him, between 2023 and 2024, allocations to state governments increased by about 62 percent, while local governments recorded a 47 percent rise.

Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the new tax reforms which reduced the Federal Government’s share of Value Added Tax (VAT) from 15 percent to 10 percent, giving states 55 percent and local governments 35 percent. He described this change as “another bold step by the President to ensure that governance is closer to the people.”

The governor further praised President Tinubu’s strong advocacy for local government financial autonomy. He recalled the Federal Government’s recent victory at the Supreme Court, which established a historic legal foundation for the independence of local councils in Nigeria.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the President’s next major reform focus is on restructuring the nation’s security architecture through the creation of state police, a policy he described as “long overdue and fundamental.”

Quoting President Tinubu’s recent remarks to Katsina leaders, the governor said, “I am reviewing all aspects of security. I have to create a State Police. We are looking at that holistically. We will defeat insecurity.”

He described the Renewed Hope Agenda as a “bridge-building framework” designed to unite Nigeria’s diverse regions through equity, reform, and inclusive growth. According to him, “President Tinubu is a veteran unifier and a bridge-builder. His Renewed Hope Agenda is about connecting Nigeria — bridges of reform, of prosperity, and of national unity.”

Drawing inspiration from Nigeria’s founding fathers, particularly the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sanwo-Olu emphasized that sustainable development must be homegrown and context-specific. “More than six decades later, the Sardauna’s words still ring true. Our duty is to build on those legacies, planting trees we may not sit under, but ensuring a better Nigeria for future generations,” he said.

Reaffirming Lagos State’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government in advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda, Sanwo-Olu declared, “The task ahead is immense, but together, guided by unity and purpose, we will achieve it.”

Senate advances Bill to establish AI and ICT centre in Ekiti State

0

The Senate on Tuesday passed for second reading a bill seeking to establish the Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Communication Technology Solutions Centre in Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti State, aimed at positioning Nigeria as a major player in the global digital economy.

The bill, titled “Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Communication Technology Solutions Centre (Establishment) Bill, 2025 (SB. 763),” was sponsored by Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu (APC – Ekiti South). He said the proposed centre would serve as a national hub for research, innovation, and development in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

According to Adaramodu, the world is fast being reshaped by artificial intelligence, digital innovation, and advanced technologies that now drive governance, commerce, education, healthcare, and national security. He warned that “nations that fail to invest strategically in these technologies risk being left behind in the 21st-century knowledge economy.”

He explained that the bill seeks to establish a specialized centre that will promote research and innovation in artificial intelligence, robotics, data science, and other related technologies. The proposed facility, he said, would also encourage collaboration between government, academia, and private industry while equipping young Nigerians with cutting-edge digital and AI-based skills for employment and entrepreneurship.

Adaramodu described the choice of Omuo-Ekiti as strategic, noting that Ekiti State has long been known as a cradle of education and intellectual excellence. “The establishment of this Centre in Omuo-Ekiti will not only stimulate research and innovation but also catalyse economic growth in the South-West region and across the country,” he said.

He highlighted the national benefits of the proposed centre, noting that it would serve as a platform for developing homegrown digital solutions to address challenges in agriculture, health, education, and public service delivery. The centre, he added, would empower Nigerian youths to compete globally in the AI and tech ecosystem, reduce dependence on imported technologies, and boost indigenous innovation.

“Artificial intelligence is the new frontier of human progress. Every developed nation is investing in AI infrastructure and innovation centres. Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind,” Adaramodu said.

He stressed that the bill was not meant to create additional bureaucracy but to establish a centre of excellence that would drive sustainable innovation and digital transformation nationwide. “This Bill represents an important step toward securing Nigeria’s place in the global technological landscape,” he added. “It aligns with our national goals of youth empowerment, job creation, and economic diversification.”

After wide support from senators across party lines, the bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over plenary, for further legislative action and to report back in four weeks.

Nigeria Has Ended Economic Volatility, Says VP Shettima

0

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has succeeded in ending the regimes of volatility and unpredictability that previously affected Nigeria’s economy. He made this known in Abuja on Tuesday while declaring open the Digital Nigeria International Conference and Exhibition 2025, where he addressed policymakers, innovators, investors, and technology stakeholders on the future of the nation’s digital economy.

According to him, global economic uncertainties, shocks, shifting alliances, and the rapid displacement of traditional jobs by emerging technologies compelled the administration to act boldly. He noted that the reforms currently being implemented are already stabilising the economy and restoring investor confidence. He cited Fitch’s upgrade of Nigeria’s sovereign rating to B with a stable outlook and Moody’s lifting of the nation’s issuer rating to B3 with a stable outlook as evidence of growing international approval of the government’s policy direction.

“The world is taking note of the steady course the nation is maintaining,” Shettima said. “What this Administration has achieved is to end the regimes of volatility and unpredictability that once defined our economy. The phase before us now is to ensure that these macroeconomic gains trickle down to the people, from the kiosks of our neighbourhood traders to the boardrooms of our multinational corporations.”

He explained that the government would no longer apply outdated solutions to modern challenges. “We did what we have done because we can no longer apply 20th-century solutions to 21st-century problems,” he said. He described the Digital Nigeria Conference as a platform that affirms innovation for a sustainable digital future that accelerates growth, inclusion, and global competitiveness.

The Vice President said the conference theme, “Innovation for a Sustainable Digital Future: Accelerating Growth, Inclusion, and Global Competitiveness,” aligns with President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda. He stated that the future being built is one where Nigerian youth are given priority and representation in decision-making processes and digital transformation efforts across various sectors.

Shettima emphasized that digital transformation is key to Nigeria’s long-term stability. However, he noted that the country must set its priorities correctly to move beyond the quick development of simple applications and instead build deep technology solutions that support agriculture, healthcare, logistics, and governance. He highlighted the need for digital services to benefit all parts of the country equally.

“We need a digital ecosystem that works as seamlessly in Lagos as it does in Abuja, in Port Harcourt, in Kano, in Gusau, and across every corner of our nation,” he said. “The digital success we seek is one where the farmer in Bida can access real-time market data to sell his harvest at a fair price, where a young woman in Oguta can work remotely for a global company because she has connectivity and the skills to compete. That is the inclusive growth President Tinubu envisions.”

He said Nigeria must no longer lament its absence in past industrial revolutions. Instead, the country should recognise the digital era as a chance to define its own place in global development. Shettima described President Tinubu as a leader of vision guiding the nation through a period that demands reform and patriotism.

He outlined the administration’s digital strategy based on three pillars: People, Infrastructure, and Policy. On People, he said the government is building a talent pipeline by integrating digital literacy into school curricula, digitising the informal sector through the Digital Literacy for All programme, and training professionals through the 3 Million Technical Talent initiative.

On Infrastructure, he said the administration is constructing the broadband superhighway needed to support a strong digital economy. Projects like Bridge and 774 are expanding high-speed internet access to ensure that innovation hubs across the country have equal opportunities to grow.

On Policy, he explained that the government is creating an environment that encourages innovation. He pointed to the success of the cashless economy reforms, which have helped position Nigeria as one of the most dynamic fintech ecosystems in Africa. He added that the government is in the advanced stage of passing the National Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill, which will support smarter governance and efficient public service delivery.

Shettima called on the private sector to continue supporting the government’s digital vision. He described private organisations, innovators, and economic experts as important partners who turn possibilities into progress.

He also stressed that Nigeria’s digital economy is critical for job creation, wealth expansion, and economic diversification. He said emerging opportunities in software development, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and digital payments can position Nigeria as a competitive global player. He noted that the government’s responsibility is to create conditions that allow talent and private capital to thrive.

The Vice President said the administration is working to strengthen investor protection, promote transparent regulatory frameworks, and ensure that young entrepreneurs have access to funding opportunities. He said that venture capital networks, startup incubation centres, and partnerships with global technology companies will be encouraged to support local innovation. He added that discussions with international development partners are ongoing to support digital skills training and technology investment.

Earlier, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, said the digital policies being introduced are improving Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. He called on stakeholders to deepen collaboration to make Nigeria a global example in technology adoption for shared prosperity.

The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, praised the Vice President for his support for Nigerian youth. He said the government remains committed to empowering young people to solve national challenges through technology.

The CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, noted the increasing global use of digital devices and highlighted the economic potential of the digital sector. He emphasized the need for Nigeria to harness this potential through collaboration, innovation, and sustained digital growth.

He added that Nigeria’s future in the digital economy will depend on commitment, investment in skills, and cooperation between government and private sector ensuring progress.
