The British High Commission, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, has held a one-day workshop in Kano to unlock new trade opportunities under the United Kingdom’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS).

The workshop brought together major stakeholders in Nigeria’s agricultural export sector to discuss how the DCTS can improve market access and increase profitability for local producers.

The UK Head of Trade Policy for Nigeria, Mujina Kaindama, while delivering her opening remarks, said trade remains a key driver for economic growth and development. She explained that the DCTS offers reduced or zero tariffs on exports, helping Nigerian businesses compete more effectively in the global market.

According to her, “The DCTS, launched in 2023, provides several benefits, including reduced or zero tariffs on nearly 3,000 products, simplified rules of origin for easier compliance, and fewer conditions for improved market access.” She emphasized that the initiative supports sustainable trade relationships and encourages export diversification.

Dr Adiyas Ode, the Country Director of PROPCOM+, highlighted that the project plays a vital role in supporting local farmers through improved seed distribution, technical training, and value chain development. She said these efforts are designed to boost productivity and promote the processing of raw commodities into high-quality export products. She urged Nigerian exporters to “seize the opportunities offered by the DCTS to expand their market reach and strengthen Nigeria’s presence in international trade.”

Aminu Nura Abba, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, represented by the Director of Investment Promotion, Orji Gertrude, stated that the United Kingdom is the third-largest investor in Nigeria, while Nigeria is the second-largest destination for UK investments in Africa. She noted that the DCTS will further enhance bilateral trade and deepen economic cooperation between both nations.

Naziru Halliru, the Director-General of the Kano State Investment Promotion Agency (KanInvest), commended the UK government for hosting the event in Kano. He said agriculture remains a top priority for the state and emphasized that “Kano, home to the largest grains market in Africa, remains open to new investment and trade opportunities that can drive growth at both local and national levels.”

Niger State allocates 20000 hectares for sugar production

Niger State governor and farmer, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced that the state government has allocated 20,000 hectares of land to boost sugar production.

Governor Umaru Bago made this known while receiving the Chairman of Flour Mills of Nigeria, Mr. John Coumantaros, alongside foreign investors from Brazil, the United States, and South Africa, who were in Minna to assess agricultural activities and explore areas of collaboration with the state government.

The visiting investors were taken to the Tagwai Dam and Tagwai feed lots, where Governor Bago shared his administration’s plans to expand sugar and crop production to meet national food security targets. He explained that the partnership with the investors would significantly transform agriculture in Nigeria, emphasizing that the state’s focus is on understanding and strengthening the agricultural value chain.

Farmer Bago also revealed plans to scale up seed production in the state, acknowledging that one of Nigeria’s biggest agricultural challenges is the lack of quality seeds for farmers. He stated, “We are working to improve seed availability because most farmers in Nigeria do not have access to the right seeds for high productivity.”

The governor expressed confidence in the collaboration, especially with the Brazilian investors, noting that the partnership aims to develop large areas of animal pasture for livestock feed and to improve livestock genetics for better milk production. He added that the government plans to upgrade abattoirs from packaging blood meat to producing frozen meat that meets international standards.

Governor Bago reiterated his administration’s commitment to working with development partners, stressing that Niger State will utilize its natural resources, including water bodies and earth dams, to ensure water supply for year-round agricultural production.

Flour Mills Chairman, John Coumantaros, praised the governor, describing him as “a tremendous and visionary leader who has transformed the agricultural industry across Nigeria.” He said the partnership with Niger State would empower farmers, reshape the agricultural ecosystem, and support sugar and seed production across the region.

Other development partners also expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with the state government, assuring their support in driving the farmer governor’s agricultural revolution and vision for sustainable food production.

FG to reduce used car imports as Delta showcases industrial resources

Nigeria’s leaders from the industrial, financial, and political sectors have renewed their commitment to reviving the country’s automotive industry through new policies, financial innovation, and stronger public–private partnerships. This resolution was reached during a four-day retreat organized for members and staff of the House Committee on Industry of the National Assembly, held in Delta State.

The retreat, jointly organized by the House Committee on Industry, the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), and the Delta State Government, brought together major stakeholders to discuss strategies for improving local automobile production, expanding access to vehicle financing, and reducing the importation of used cars into Nigeria.

In his keynote address, Hon. Dr. Enitan Dolapo Badru, Chairman of the House Committee on Industry, highlighted the importance of legislation and access to credit in reshaping Nigeria’s automotive sector. “Every bank in Nigeria should dedicate a minimum of six percent of its total lending portfolio to automotive credit schemes. This is essential to create an affordable vehicle ownership system and stimulate domestic manufacturing,” he stated.

Badru emphasized the need for close cooperation among lawmakers, financial institutions, and automotive regulators to develop a sustainable vehicle financing model and establish a structured used-car market that meets global standards. He noted that such reforms would help build a reliable ecosystem for local car buyers and manufacturers.

The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Chief Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, also stressed the importance of a strong financial and policy framework to support local car production and ownership. He pointed out that collaboration between the Central Bank of Nigeria, commercial banks, and the National Assembly would create opportunities for new investments and jobs.

“We must create a guaranteed used-car industry that provides Nigerians with affordable options, curbs import dependence and builds confidence in local manufacturing. With the right policy support, the Nigerian automotive market can become self-sustaining and globally competitive,” the NADDC Director-General affirmed.

Representing the Governor of Delta State, Prince Erijo Johnson, Chief of Staff to the Governor, expressed the state’s readiness to partner with federal agencies and private investors in promoting industrial growth. “Delta State is richly endowed not only with oil and gas but also with solid minerals such as kaolin, silicon and industrial clay that can serve as vital inputs for automotive and manufacturing industries,” he said.

Stakeholders at the retreat expressed optimism that these joint initiatives will lead to innovation, job creation, and sustainable industrial development within Nigeria’s automotive sector.
