Edo Governor to recruit 3,000 more teachers

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced plans to employ 3,000 additional teachers across the state as part of his administration’s ongoing effort to strengthen the education sector and improve learning outcomes.

This was disclosed in a statement released by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Wednesday. The governor made the announcement shortly after supervising the handing out of letters of employment to 5,000 teachers who had been on contract for several years under the previous administration.

The newly employed teachers, who were previously engaged under a contractual arrangement during the tenure of former Governor Godwin Obaseki, had been receiving a monthly stipend of ₦65,000. Their official appointment letters were presented during a ceremony held at the Government House in Benin City.

Governor Okpebholo, while addressing the gathering, emphasised the importance of the event and reiterated his government’s dedication to valuing teachers and improving the quality of education in Edo State.

“Teachers remain a top priority in our development agenda and the state has finalised plans to employ 3,000 additional teachers,” Okpebholo said. “We are building and renovating schools across Edo, and as infrastructure improves, so must manpower. Our goal is to ensure that no school lacks qualified teachers and that every child receives quality education in a conducive learning environment.”

In appreciation of the governor’s efforts, the Edo State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) paid a courtesy visit to the Government House on Tuesday, where it presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to the governor. The award, given in recognition of his exceptional reforms and commitment to repositioning the education sector, was presented by the NUT State Chairman, Bernard Ajobiewe, accompanied by the Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State Chapter, Comrade Bernard Egwahide.

Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude for the award and thanked Edo teachers for their dedication and patriotism in shaping the state’s educational future. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education as the foundation for human development.

“Our administration has ended the era of overcrowded classrooms and combined classes that once defined public schools in Edo. The new education reforms have restored confidence in the system,” the governor said.

He further assured that his government would continue to focus on performance and results rather than political rivalry.

“If the last administration had performed well, the Edo people would have felt it. We are focused on rebuilding the system and restoring pride in our schools. My administration is committed to results, not rhetoric,” Okpebholo stated.

He also pledged continued collaboration with labour unions to promote industrial harmony and collective progress in the state. As part of his commitment to workers’ welfare, the governor announced plans to donate a bus to the NUT to enhance its statewide operations and monitoring activities across the 18 local government areas.

“We will continue to maintain a strong working relationship with the NUT and all labour unions. The welfare of teachers remains the heart of our education reforms,” Okpebholo added.

In his remarks, NUT Chairman Bernard Ajobiewe commended the governor for regularising the employment of over 5,000 Edo-Star teachers who had remained contract staff for more than three years. He said the development has restored dignity and motivation among teachers in the state.

“In less than a year, our story as teachers has changed from frustration to fulfilment. Governor Okpebholo has not only restored dignity to the teaching profession but has rekindled hope in public education. His actions demonstrate true leadership and empathy,” Ajobiewe said.

Similarly, Comrade Bernard Egwahide praised the governor’s people-centered governance style and reaffirmed the NLC’s continued support for his administration.

“We are grateful to a governor who listens, acts, and delivers. The workers of Edo State will stand by you as you continue to transform our education sector and fulfil your promises,” he said.

Since assuming office, Governor Okpebholo has implemented several bold reforms aimed at transforming Edo State’s civil and public service into one of the most efficient and professional in the country. The Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa, has been leading the reforms under the governor’s directive.

One of the major reforms under Okpebholo’s administration is the decision to end outsourced cleaning contracts and directly employ 1,000 cleaners as civil servants, a move aimed at promoting accountability and job security.

In addition to the teachers’ employment drive, nearly 2,000 new staff have been recruited into critical sectors including health, education, and agriculture, bringing the total number of new employees in the state to over 3,000 in less than one year.

Edo SUBEB says teachers with third class, pass not eligible for permanent jobs

The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has clarified the employment status of teachers holding third class and pass degree certificates who have not received their permanent appointment letters.

According to the Board, these qualifications do not meet the current national minimum standards required for permanent employment in the education sector. The statement explained that “teachers with third class or pass degrees are advised to obtain higher or additional qualifications to meet the professional standards.”

Edo SUBEB encouraged affected teachers to pursue further academic and professional development, including a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or other recognized certifications to enhance their eligibility. The Board also stressed that the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) certification is now compulsory for all teachers nationwide.

“Teachers must ensure they are properly certified and qualified in line with the national education policy,” the Board stated.

To support this process, Edo SUBEB recommended the Edo State College of Education as a credible option for acquiring the necessary qualifications. The Board urged teachers to take advantage of this opportunity to improve their professional competence and contribute effectively to quality education delivery in Edo State.

Afro-Tech Girls and VampAI launch Resume Challenge

0

Afro-Tech Girls, a non-profit organization focused on empowering African women in STEM, has announced a partnership with VampAI to launch a five-week Resume Challenge. The initiative aims to help women translate their technical skills into tangible career opportunities, the NGO said in a statement.

Over the last decade, Afro-Tech Girls has trained more than 5,000 young women across Africa in areas such as UI/UX design, cloud computing, front-end development, and data science. However, many of these women have faced challenges in effectively presenting their skills through resumes, portfolios, and interviews. The new programme was designed to address this gap and enhance employability.

From a pool of over 1,000 past beneficiaries, 34 participants were selected for the inaugural edition of the Resume Challenge. They received personalized portfolio reviews, access to career development tools, and interactive workshops facilitated by industry professionals including Ope Odunlami and Prisca Anuolam. Both experts provided practical insights on how to build strong portfolios and excel in interview sessions.

By the conclusion of the programme, 97 percent of participants reported feeling more confident in creating resumes and portfolios, while 72 percent stated that their overall career confidence had improved. This improvement, according to the NGO, shows that participants are now better equipped to compete in both local and international tech job markets.

VampAI, which connects African talent to global startups and companies, complements this initiative by enabling employers to access verified talent, streamlined recruitment processes, and reliable cross-border payment solutions.

The Resume Challenge is part of a larger partnership between Afro-Tech Girls and VampAI that includes mentorship programmes, advanced career bootcamps, and direct placement into startups and scaleups. Participants’ work and growth are featured in the ATG x VampAI Talent Showcase, providing potential employers with insight into Africa’s growing tech workforce.

“Technical skills open doors, but career readiness ensures you can walk through them with confidence,” the statement read. “By combining technical training with professional development, we are preparing women to thrive in the global tech ecosystem.”

Katsina partners UK-funded PropCom+, NADF to boost agricultural finance

0

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the state’s agricultural sector through a proposed partnership with PropCom+, a programme funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and its implementing partner, the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF).

The Governor gave the assurance while receiving delegations from PropCom+ and NADF during a high-level engagement held recently at the Government House, Katsina. The visiting teams were led to the Governor by the Special Adviser on Banking and Finance, Hajiya Bilkisu Sulaiman Ibrahim.

Governor Radda appreciated the collaboration, describing it as a significant milestone in unlocking sustainable agricultural finance for smallholder farmers, cooperatives, and agribusinesses across Katsina State. “Our goal is to build a system where finance becomes a bridge — not a barrier — for farmers and agripreneurs,” Governor Radda stated. “With credible partners like PropCom+ and NADF, Katsina is setting the pace for agricultural sustainability, innovation, and inclusive growth.”

He emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of Katsina’s economy and the foundation of his administration’s economic transformation agenda. The Governor noted that access to finance is one of the most critical enablers for empowering farmers to increase productivity, adopt modern technology, and expand their businesses.

Governor Radda also assured that his government is committed to establishing transparent and accountable financing models that will outlive political tenures and deliver lasting benefits to rural communities. He stressed that every agricultural policy under his leadership is designed to ensure that resources reach genuine farmers and producers, not intermediaries. He further reaffirmed his determination to deepen partnerships with local and international organizations to build a resilient, technology-driven agricultural economy that guarantees food security and long-term prosperity for Katsina State.

The session, which also had in attendance the PropCom+ Country Director, Dr Adiye Ode, featured the unveiling of a Sub-National Agricultural De-risking Mechanism for Katsina State — an innovative framework designed to reduce investment risks in agriculture. The model is expected to attract banks, private investors, and development partners to invest in key value chains such as grains, livestock, cotton, and horticulture.

According to officials, the new mechanism will promote increased lending to farmers, strengthen food security, and support agro-industrial development in alignment with the Katsina Sustainable Development Plan (SDP) under Governor Radda’s leadership. The initiative highlights the administration’s focus on promoting economic diversification, job creation, and poverty reduction through strategic agricultural partnerships.

Speaking during the engagement, Hajiya Bilkisu Sulaiman Ibrahim, who facilitated the meeting, commended the partnership, describing it as a reflection of Governor Radda’s forward-looking economic vision. She noted that the collaboration underscores the Governor’s resolve to diversify Katsina’s economy dependency through structured agricultural financing and risk-sharing frameworks.

“Governor Radda’s leadership continues to open new frontiers for Katsina’s farmers and entrepreneurs. His focus on partnerships and accountability has attracted credible investors and development partners to the state,” she said. Hajiya Bilkisu further explained that the initiative will strengthen the institutional capacity of cooperatives and financial intermediaries, ensuring that credit facilities reach genuine farmers and value chain actors who can drive productivity and create jobs at the grassroots.

Since assuming office, Governor Radda has made agriculture a central pillar of his economic revival agenda. Through initiatives such as the Katsina Sustainable Platform for Agriculture (KASPA), his administration has rolled out several strategic programmes aimed at improving farmers’ access to finance, modern technology, and viable markets across the state. Similarly, projects like the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Programme (L-PRES) and the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) further demonstrate the administration’s consistent drive to strengthen agricultural value chains and uplift rural communities.

The proposed partnership with PropCom+ and NADF aligns perfectly with this broader vision to institutionalize agricultural finance and ensure that no farmer is left behind. It also complements the state’s ongoing reforms in land administration, irrigation development, and youth agripreneurship — all geared toward making agriculture more attractive, profitable, and sustainable. By working closely with PropCom+ and NADF, Katsina State is positioning itself as a leading hub for agricultural innovation and green investment in Northern Nigeria.

This collaboration reinforces the Radda administration’s conviction that sustainable development thrives through partnership, transparency, and a shared commitment to improving the lives of citizens.
