COWA launches green borders summit to empower women, youth

The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has launched a new initiative focused on environmental sustainability, women’s empowerment, youth development, and economic inclusion in Nigeria’s border communities.

The event, known as the COWA Sustainability and Green Borders Summit, was held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Ladi Kwali Event Centre, Abuja Continental Hotel. The summit carried the theme, “Greening Borders, Empowering Lives: Women and Youth as Champions of Sustainable Trade.”

The occasion attracted top government officials and development partners, including the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi; directors from the Ministries of Youth Development and Women Affairs; and representatives from collaborating agencies such as the Border Communities Development Agency. The agency’s Executive Secretary, Mallam Sadiq Abdullahi, Esq., was among those present.

In her keynote address, the National President of COWA, Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, described the summit as more than an event but a “movement for transformation,” highlighting Nigeria’s dedication to a cleaner and more inclusive future. She announced plans to establish the COWA Sustainability and Innovation Centre in Abuja, which will serve as a training hub to empower women and youth in solar energy, waste recycling, and green entrepreneurship.

“This is not just about planting trees,” she stated. “It’s about planting hope, growing opportunities, and cultivating responsibility.”

According to Mrs Adeniyi, the upcoming centre will feature a Green Skills Academy, an Innovation and Research Lab, a Policy and Leadership Institute, and a Green Enterprise Hub. The hub will support projects in eco-fashion, recycling, and renewable energy, helping participants build sustainable livelihoods.

She further revealed insights from the recently conducted Green Barrack Audit, which showed that seven out of ten border communities in Nigeria lack access to clean water and electricity. She added that deforestation and illegal trade are worsening living conditions and economic challenges in those areas.

Addressing participants, Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi called for a shift in the government’s approach to border management, emphasizing investment in border communities. “We need to stop treating border communities like problems to be managed and start treating them like partners to be invested in,” he said. “Prevention is cheaper than enforcement, and it is more humane.”

He explained that real empowerment through green enterprise, youth employment, and sustainable infrastructure remains the best path to ending poverty, smuggling, and insecurity. “Let’s move from talking about green borders to actually building them,” he said. “That means funding; real funding, that reaches women and young people doing the actual work on the ground.”

Adewale Adeniyi also reaffirmed that the Nigeria Customs Service would align its modernisation programme with global sustainability goals, ensuring that trade facilitation contributes to environmental protection and community development.

The event featured a panel session moderated by Joy Onyekwere, with experts in climate change and sustainability, including Dr Ameh Zion Abba, Prof. Magnus Onuoha, Dr Chimere Ohajinwa, and Rifkaku Joseph Odeyemi. The discussion focused on the role of women and youth in promoting green livelihood opportunities in Nigeria’s border areas.

Participants praised COWA for its innovative approach in connecting trade, sustainability, and border development.

In her closing remarks, Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi reaffirmed COWA’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness and socio-economic empowerment through actionable programmes. She urged all stakeholders to work together to achieve a greener, fairer, and more secure Nigeria.

Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmed Aliyu, has commissioned the North-West University Teaching Hospital founded by Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. The Governor described the project as “a golden legacy that will forever be remembered and cherished by the people of the state.”

Speaking during the inauguration in Sokoto, Governor Aliyu said the establishment of the teaching hospital marks a significant milestone in ensuring that medical students acquire the practical knowledge required to become competent and professional medical doctors. He noted that the new facility will boost healthcare services and strengthen medical education in the state.

“This hospital will serve as a centre of excellence for clinical care, medical education, and research. It is designed to provide world-class services, equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment facilities that will cater to both local and regional health needs,” he said.

The Governor urged the management and staff of the institution to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and compassion in the service of humanity. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high medical standards that align with global healthcare practices.

Highlighting his administration’s ongoing efforts to enhance the health sector, Dr Aliyu revealed that the state government had secured approval from the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) to commence an internship training programme for all Radiography graduates. He explained that with this approval, all Radiography graduates sponsored by the state would now undergo their mandatory one-year internship at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto.

The Governor further outlined key achievements of his administration aimed at improving healthcare delivery at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. These include the provision of basic and essential medical equipment across hospitals, the training of indigenous doctors, and the automatic employment of 122 newly graduated doctors.

He also announced the automatic employment and deployment of 1,675 nurses and midwives across various health facilities in the state. Additionally, the government has enacted a compulsory two-year rural posting for all health professionals sponsored by the state to ensure the availability of quality healthcare services in rural communities.

Governor Aliyu stressed that providing accessible and quality healthcare remains one of the major pillars of his 9-point Smart Innovative Agenda. He noted that the health sector received the second-largest allocation in the 2025 state budget.

“I want to use this medium to assure the good people of Sokoto State of our firm commitment to ensuring accessible and quality healthcare services for all, irrespective of where they live,” the Governor added.

In his remarks, the founder of North-West University, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, said the establishment of the teaching hospital marks a new chapter in healthcare delivery, medical education, and research in Sokoto, the North-West region, and Nigeria as a whole.

He explained that the hospital was established to complement the university’s plan to introduce medical and health-related programmes such as MBBS, Nursing, Radiography, and other allied health sciences that require practical training. According to him, the hospital will offer tertiary healthcare services and provide specialized, patient-centred, and accessible medical care.

Wamakko noted that the facility is equipped with modern technologies, including advanced diagnostic imaging, state-of-the-art surgical suites, and intensive care units capable of managing complex medical conditions that previously required patients to travel long distances.

“Our aim is to bring world-class healthcare to the doorsteps of our people while providing a centre for research to address the unique health challenges of our region,” he stated.

Senator Wamakko commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his visionary leadership and the transformational achievements recorded within a short time in office.

NBTE trains, certifies 619 master craft persons nationwide

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has trained and certified six hundred and nineteen Master Craft Persons across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones to enhance skills acquisition and improve youth employability.

The initiative, conducted under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) scheme, aims to formalise the expertise of artisans and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign labour. The certification will also enable beneficiaries to serve as trainers in technical and vocational colleges nationwide.

During the presentation of certificates to the beneficiaries in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the NBTE, Professor Idris Bugaje, explained that the RPL scheme targets the informal sector where millions of Nigerians possess practical skills without formal recognition.

“The Master Craft Persons underwent intensive training and evaluation in various fields such as roadside mechanics, welders, shoemakers, tailors, and fabricators,” Professor Bugaje stated. “Many of them have competencies that even surpass those who went through formal education. Today, we have recognized and certified them after a thorough assessment process,” he added.

According to him, the milestone was achieved with a budget of N100 million, which also funded the local training of Three Hundred and Forty-One assessors by experts from Kenya. The training and assessment, he noted, were part of the NBTE’s efforts to promote technical education and entrepreneurship development in Nigeria.

Professor Bugaje emphasized the importance of expanding the programme to reach at least two million artisans, creating a pool of certified workers to support national development projects in construction, rail expansion, and gas infrastructure. He said the NBTE is committed to aligning Nigeria’s skills development framework with international standards to drive economic growth and self-reliance.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, represented by the Director of Polytechnic Education, Dr. Ejeh Usman, noted that the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s vision to integrate informal sector competencies into the mainstream economy for sustainable development.

Nigeriastartupact.ng gathered that some beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the programme, describing it as a life-changing opportunity that will empower them to contribute more meaningfully to national growth and youth employment.

Other facilities include a creative development hub for arts and culture, an ICT hub equipped with digital tools, a coffee bar designed as a vibrant networking space, and an E-library to support research, digital learning, and access to global information resources.

At the flag-off of the pilot phase in several local government areas, Governor Eno, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Dr. Ekerette Ekanem, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to youth empowerment. He explained that the hubs are structured to reflect global best practices, using a modular incubation model that ensures each center operates as a hub of excellence and innovation.

Governor Eno urged young people across the state to embrace the initiative not just as participants but as creators of their own success. “Let me emphasize this: the true success of these hubs will not be measured by their physical structures, but by how you, the youth, choose to use them,” he said. “Take ownership, participate actively, innovate boldly, and collaborate across disciplines and communities.”

He added that the hubs are envisioned as interconnected platforms from which young people can create jobs, build scalable businesses, and make meaningful contributions to Akwa Ibom’s economic growth. The Governor also commended local leaders, development partners, and community stakeholders for their active collaboration in realizing the project. “Your partnership and shared vision are the bedrock of this initiative’s success,” he noted.
