Nigeria partners OneServe Tech to launch national livestock digital system

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has reaffirmed its partnership with OneServe Technologies Limited to develop the National Livestock Digital Public Infrastructure (NLDPI), a project aimed at transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector and improving efficiency across its value chain.

The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, made this known when a delegation from OneServe Technologies Limited paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry in Abuja. Maiha explained that the digital platform will create vast opportunities for stakeholders in livestock farming, transportation, and processing.

“We are planning to have custom-made vehicle wagons for the transportation of livestock,” the Minister stated. He added that only registered wagons under the new digital system will be authorized to transport animals across the country to ensure safety and hygiene.

Maiha further emphasized the need for private sector participation in red meat production, questioning, “How many abattoirs do we have in the country? What are their capacities, and what is their state of functionality?” He also highlighted the importance of developing a national livestock master plan and comprehensive data collection to promote transparency, coordination, and long-term planning in the livestock sector.

In his remarks, the Team Lead of OneServe Technologies Limited, Ibrahim Maigari Ahmed, said the digital infrastructure would create an integrated database that captures essential details such as market locations, livestock breeds, available banking services, and operational days.

Ahmed noted that the platform would also connect users to registered veterinarians, transporters, and other stakeholders to enhance accessibility and efficiency. “As a member of the public, when I click on the market link, I will see all registered doctors, transport companies, and stakeholders with their addresses, particularly those located near the market,” he explained.

World Food Day 2025: Lagos reaffirms food security commitment

0

The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to redefining agriculture as a dynamic engine for growth, inclusion, and sustainability.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known at the grand finale of the 2025 World Food Day Celebration, themed “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” held at the Nigeria Police College, Ikeja.

Sanwo-Olu said his administration reaffirmed its collective resolve to work hand in hand for better food systems and a better future for Lagosians. The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, noted that the state government remains committed to ensuring that Lagos stays food secure despite its geographical limitations.

He explained that the government has implemented numerous projects and programmes to tackle hunger, malnutrition, unemployment, and under-employment, while boosting food production and supply systems across the state.

According to him, “Our administration’s dedication is evident in the continuous provision of support for food production, infrastructure, and market systems designed to reduce high food prices and build a sustainable food reserve management structure.”

He further stated that this year’s theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” highlights the urgent need for collaboration among governments, the private sector, development organizations, and communities to transform agrifood systems, promote healthy diets, and protect the environment.

Sanwo-Olu added that the 2025 World Food Day underscores the importance of the government’s shared responsibility to strengthen the state’s food system, serving as a collective call to action against hunger and malnutrition.

“It also marks the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945—a milestone in the global fight against hunger, now observed in over 150 countries through diverse events, dialogues, and outreach programmes,” he said.

He explained that the United Nations defines food security as access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food for an active and healthy life, adding that it goes beyond food availability to include affordability, accessibility, safety, and cultural acceptability.

The Governor listed major agricultural projects as part of Lagos State’s ongoing food security drive. These include the Lagos State Food Market System Transformation Programme; Lagos State Agricultural and Food System Roadmap (2021–2025); the Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub; Mid-Level Agroproduce Hubs; Last-Mile Food Distribution Outlets; and the Produce for Lagos Programme.

Others include the Eko Agro Mechanisation Programme, Agricultural Value Chains Enterprise Activation Programme, Lagos Rice Mill, Imota, Lagos Agrithon 2.0, Eko Last Mile Meat Shops & Butchers Academy, Ounje Eko Farmer Subsidy Programme, Eko Flavour – Junior & Senior, and the Cattle Feedlot Project.

He explained that “The major thrust of the agricultural and food system roadmap is to increase local food production from the present 20 per cent demand to 40 per cent through the implementation of various programmes and initiatives and the development of a 5-year roadmap.”

Sanwo-Olu added that “The roadmap is a strategic document developed by the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture with the aim of stimulating private sector participation and investment in the development of agricultural value chains in Lagos State.”

He acknowledged the contributions of farmers and other stakeholders who play vital roles in ensuring food availability in the state. “Our administration recognises the immense efforts, dedication, and contributions of our noble farmers and other value chain actors towards attaining food security in the state,” he said.

The Governor also commended partners such as British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation, Stanbic IBTC, Origingroup, Providus Bank, Tropical General Investments Group, farmers, commodity associations, agro-allied organizations, students, and the media for supporting activities to celebrate the day.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, encouraged residents to embrace subsistence farming to help reduce the impact of rising food costs.

Olusanya said, “We urge residents to grow different crops within their homes to cushion the high cost of food items in the state.” She explained that the Lagos State Government has also implemented policies aimed at making agriculture more profitable for stakeholders in different value chains.

“The World Food Day is designated by the United Nations to celebrate all things related to food. But here in Lagos, we choose to honour our farmers, processors, market players, logistics providers, aggregators—in fact, everyone and anyone involved in the food value chain,” the Commissioner said.

Nigeria to distribute free farm inputs as food prices drop

As Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark the 2025 World Food Day on Thursday, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security announced new short-term plans aimed at making farm inputs more accessible and affordable to smallholder farmers. The ministry said the recent drop in foodstuff prices is linked to an increase in local food production.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja after a Sensitization Walk held to commemorate the event themed “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said the move aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda to ease economic hardship for Nigerians.

“In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to ease economic hardship, the ministry is supporting smallholder farmers in all the states of the federation and the FCT with vital farm implements and inputs,” he stated.

He added that, “These will be provided at no cost to farmers, and distributed through Agricultural Commodity Associations, Farmers Cooperative Groups, Internally Displaced Persons, women, and youths as well as farmers with special needs. The essential inputs are part of our commitment to boosting food production and enhancing farmers’ productivity throughout the country.”

The minister emphasized that this year’s celebration was particularly significant as it coincided with the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a milestone marking global efforts to build a food-secure world.

“Likewise, the theme ‘Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future’ emphasizes the importance of global collaboration across governments, organizations, the private sector, and communities to build a peaceful, sustainable, prosperous, and food-secure future,” he said.

Abdullahi noted that Nigeria joined over 150 countries to celebrate the World Food Day with events and outreach activities designed to raise awareness of hunger and food security issues. These events, he said, were organized to inspire collective action for more sustainable and resilient agri-food systems that can withstand global challenges such as climate change and insecurity.

“As we reflect on the state of food security in our nation, we note that despite progress made and successes achieved, many challenges persist. The adverse effect of climate change, limited access to farm inputs, post-harvest losses, funding gaps due to rising input costs, low mechanization, and insecurity in major food-growing regions have decreased agricultural output, potentially threatening the food security of our most vulnerable populations,” Abdullahi said.

He further explained that these challenges have economic implications that affect the overall performance of the agricultural sector and its contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Despite the obstacles, the minister praised Nigerian farmers for their courage and perseverance. “However, I am heartened by the resilience and determination of the Nigerian farmers, who work tirelessly to feed our nation despite these daunting challenges. Battling harsh weather conditions, pests and diseases, navigating inadequate infrastructure and limited access to markets, and persevering through insecurity and economic uncertainty is a testament to our farmers’ strength and dedication. It is also a reminder that the backbone of our nation remains strong. Thanks to the unrelenting efforts of these unsung heroes,” he said.

Abdullahi revealed that the federal government has outlined a clear policy direction that provides a roadmap for implementing key agricultural programs aimed at increasing food production and achieving food security.

“In this perspective, our policy direction is fashioned towards increased agricultural output in the country in order to sustain the contribution of agriculture to the country’s gross domestic product, enhance livelihood, and attain food security,” he stated.

He highlighted that the government is stepping up its investment in agriculture through several initiatives, including the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanization Programme. “Recently, 2,000 tractors and over 9,000 specialized farming implements were launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the cultivation of over 550,000 hectares of farmland,” he disclosed.

According to the minister, “The expected outcome is to produce more than two million metric tons of staple foods and create jobs for Nigerian youths and women.”

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhta Maiha, explained the efforts being made by his ministry to enhance livestock production in Nigeria. He said measures were being implemented to modernize the livestock sector and reduce open grazing, which he noted would soon be phased out.

The 2025 World Food Day celebration in Nigeria ended with a stakeholder dialogue focused on advancing agricultural productivity and strengthening food security across the nation.

Delta State begins talks with WAEC on 2026 CBT exam

Delta State, Nigeria – The Delta State Government has started high-level discussions with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to ensure the state’s readiness for the full transition to Computer-Based Test (CBT) examinations by 2026, in line with the Federal Government’s digital education policy.

The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Daniel Odigie, led a delegation from the ministry to WAEC’s office in Asaba to seek clarifications on the new examination framework and explore areas of collaboration for a smooth rollout across public schools in the state.

Dr. Odigie stated that the initiative aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s vision to modernize Delta State’s education system through technology-driven learning and assessment. He explained that the government had already begun developing a phased plan to install ICT facilities in public schools to support the CBT migration.

“Delta State has about 475 public secondary schools, and while it may not be possible to equip all at once, the rollout will be done in phases. Each centre will have power backup, CCTV surveillance, internet connectivity, and cooling systems to ensure secure and uninterrupted examinations,” Dr. Odigie said.

WAEC’s Branch Controller, Mr. Oladele O. E., confirmed that the CBT directive forms part of a West African-wide effort to standardize digital assessments. He added that the Council was working to ensure that the system functions both online and offline to preserve examination integrity and prevent disruptions.

He also suggested that private schools and JAMB-accredited centres with existing facilities could partner with WAEC and the State Government during the transition phase, particularly in rural areas where ICT infrastructure may still be developing.

Both parties agreed to continue consultations, with WAEC expected to submit a detailed proposal to the Ministry of Science and Technology for review. Dr. Odigie reaffirmed Delta State’s commitment to digital education, describing the CBT transition as a bold step toward improving learning outcomes and preparing students for a technology-driven future.

Gombe disburses N726m scholarships to 12101 female students

Gombe State Government has commenced the disbursement of N726 million to 12,101 female students from public junior and senior secondary schools across the state. The financial support, meant for the 2024/2025 academic session, aims to improve access to quality education for adolescent girls and enhance school infrastructure.

The initiative is part of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project, a World Bank–assisted programme. The disbursement, carried out through the School Improvement Grants (SIG) and Girls’ Scholarships, is expected to boost educational development in Gombe State and promote equal opportunities for young girls.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony on Friday, Deputy Governor Manassah Daniel Jatau described the event as a major step toward achieving inclusive and quality education for all children in the state. He noted that the initiative reflects the state government’s continuous commitment to educational advancement and gender equality.

Jatau said the support specifically targets female students because of their resilience, compassion, and impact on family and community growth. “Experience has shown that when you care for the girl child, you are also caring for the family, community, and the nation. This investment in our girls is an investment in the future of Gombe State,” he stated.

He further announced that the government has also disbursed School Improvement Grants to 537 public secondary schools across the 11 local government areas of the state. The grants, he said, are aimed at improving school infrastructure, safety, and learning conditions.

According to him, “The sum of N23.1 million each for schools with about 200 students, N46.2 million each for schools with about 500 students, and N92.4 million each for schools with over 1,000 students” have been allocated. He called on School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) and communities to ensure proper use, monitoring, and maintenance of facilities funded by the grants.

The deputy governor also commended the World Bank, the AGILE Project Implementation Unit (SPIU), and the Ministry of Education for their commitment to the successful implementation of the programme.

In her welcome address, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Aishatu Umar Maigari, described the flag-off as a major step in Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s vision to transform education in the state, especially in the basic and secondary school sectors.

“This initiative represents a shared vision of inclusion, equity, and sustainable development. Through Your Excellency’s leadership, Gombe has domesticated and successfully implemented the AGILE project to reach thousands of girls while revitalising community participation in school governance,” she said.

Dr Maigari also called on SBMCs to ensure transparent use of the funds and congratulated the beneficiaries, advising them to stay dedicated to their studies.

The state’s AGILE Project Coordinator, Dr Amina Haruna Abdul, explained that the programme was designed to remove barriers to girls’ education by offering financial assistance, improving school infrastructure, and strengthening management systems.

She said the scholarships cut across all 11 local government areas and that the first batch of beneficiaries has already received payment, while the second cohort has been enrolled and awaits validation.

“Each girl under this scheme will receive N50,000 per academic session. At the point of transition, students will receive an initial N40,000 to help them purchase school uniforms and writing materials. Subsequently, they will receive N10,000 periodically to cover school-related expenses, including small snacks, stationery, and other learning needs,” she explained.

Dr Abdul added that the financial support will help parents and guardians who face economic challenges in keeping their daughters in school. She noted that the project is not intended to cover all educational costs but will significantly reduce financial burdens and promote continuous schooling for girls.

She further stated that the initiative would increase school enrollment, improve retention rates, and ensure that more female students in Gombe State complete their secondary education.
