FG backs cbn for banks to refund failed atm transactions within 48 hours

0

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has welcomed the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) draft guidelines that require all banks to refund customers for failed Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transactions within 48 hours.

The exposure of the CBN’s Draft Guidelines on the Operations of Automated Teller Machines in Nigeria comes after the FCCPC’s Consumer Complaints Data Report, which was published in September 2025. The report, covering March to August 2025, revealed that the banking and fintech sectors recorded the highest number of consumer complaints in the country, with over 3,000 cases from the banking sector alone. The report also showed that about ₦10 billion was recovered for customers across 30 sectors.

The findings highlighted recurring issues including failed transactions, unauthorised deductions, and delayed refunds. These are the major problems the CBN’s new draft guidelines aim to fix.

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, Mr. Tunji Bello, described the CBN’s proposal as “a timely and long-awaited correction to a persistent consumer challenge.”

He explained that the move represents a significant alignment between regulatory bodies that are focused on protecting Nigerian consumers. “It is consistent with what the FCCPC has been advocating, given the number of complaints we receive about failed transactions. We commend the CBN for this decisive step, which will ease the burden on consumers and rebuild trust in financial services,” he stated.

According to the Commission, the proposed directive aligns with the provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, specifically Sections 17(g), (h), (l), (s), and (t). These sections mandate the elimination of unfair practices, the promotion of fair dealings, the resolution of consumer complaints, and the protection of consumer interests in all sectors. They also call for ensuring that goods and services provided are safe and reliable.

The FCCPC further called for the quick adoption and implementation of the CBN’s directive, saying that immediate enforcement would bring relief to consumers who are still dealing with delayed or unresolved electronic transaction reversals.

The Commission added that early enforcement will promote accountability within the banking industry and demonstrate a unified regulatory commitment to fairness, efficiency, and consumer confidence.

To make the new policy effective, the FCCPC said it would collaborate with the CBN to build a monitoring system that ensures compliance and provides timely redress when banks fail to meet the 48-hour refund requirement.

The Commission emphasized that closer cooperation among regulators will help resolve consumer issues faster, prevent similar cases in the future, and boost public trust in Nigeria’s digital financial system.

Under the draft guidelines, consumers facing unresolved ATM or electronic transaction issues are expected to first report to their banks or the CBN. If their cases remain unresolved, they can escalate complaints to the FCCPC through the Complaint Portal at complaints.fccpc.gov.ng, via email at contact@fccpc.gov.ng, or by calling 0805 600 2020.

Bauchi senator distributes 21,000 bags of semovita

Senator Shehu Buba, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District, has distributed more than 21,000 bags of semovita to members of his constituency and other residents across the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State. The distribution is aimed at easing the economic hardship currently faced by Nigerians.

This latest initiative follows an earlier intervention where the senator gave ₦10,000 cash and a bag of semovita each to 1,000 women at the Federal Low-Cost Juma’at Mosque in Bauchi.

Speaking during the distribution exercise on Monday, Senator Buba assured Nigerians that the difficult economic situation would soon improve. He noted that the Federal Government was already recording progress in its efforts to stabilise the economy.

“The Federal Government has to a large extent been able to stabilise the exchange rate of the naira against other currencies, thereby improving import and export activities,” he said.

The senator explained that his continued distribution of palliatives was part of his efforts to support his constituents and other residents of Bauchi State. He added that similar interventions had been carried out several times in the past to reduce the effects of inflation and rising food prices.

Senator Buba, who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Security and Intelligence, disclosed that Senator Sama’ila Dahuwa of Bauchi North, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), would soon join the All Progressives Congress (APC). He further called on Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi Central to also leave the PDP and join the APC “to move the state and country forward.”

He expressed appreciation to the people of Bauchi South for their peaceful conduct and continued support for the APC government. “Without peace, there cannot be meaningful development,” he said, urging residents to keep supporting the government at all levels.

The APC State Organising Secretary and Chairman of the Distribution Committee, Abdulkadir Gyangyan, explained that 1,000 bags of semovita would be distributed across the seven LGAs within Senator Buba’s constituency — Bauchi, Dass, Tafawa Balewa, Bogoro, Toro, Alkaleri, and Kirfi. The remaining 13 LGAs would each receive 500 bags, while some portions would go to party officials, political organisations, and associations.

An APC stalwart in Bauchi State, Aminu Danmaliki, commended Senator Buba’s leadership and generosity, urging residents to pray for his success. He noted the senator’s sponsorship of 500 students studying physical and environmental sciences at Malikiyya College and scholarships for other students both within and outside Nigeria.

Claims emerge TVET has begun reviewing Pending status

0

There are new claims surfacing online that the Federal Ministry of Education (FME), under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, has started reviewing the list of trainees with Pending status. Although there is no official statement from TVET on this matter, it was earlier reported that trainees’ status marked as pending will continue to be updated from time to time.

A trending update tagged “TVET UPDATE” reads, “PENDING Status Complaints have officially been submitted to TVET management, and they have assured that approvals will begin as early as MONDAY.” This has sparked reactions among applicants who have been waiting for their approval since the last phase of verification.

Candidates whose status may be updated will reportedly receive email notifications and are expected to report to their training centres within five days to complete their registration. TVET earlier warned that failure to report to the assigned training centre will lead to the cancellation of the application, and the slot will be reassigned to another applicant.

Meanwhile, some already approved trainees have raised concerns about being matched to centres too far from their locations, forcing them to reject or miss documentation. Such unclaimed slots are expected to be handed over to applicants with Pending status on their dashboard.

NNPC foundation trains 2000 farmers in Gombe

The NNPC Foundation has completed the Northern phase of its Vulnerable Farmers Training Programme, empowering over 2,000 smallholder farmers from the Gombe cluster, which includes Gombe, Adamawa, and Taraba states. The initiative is part of a nationwide agricultural empowerment project aimed at boosting food production, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and improving rural livelihoods.

Speaking at the closing ceremony in Kaltungo, Gombe State, the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation Ltd/Gte, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, represented by Dr. Bala T. David, said the intervention reflects the Foundation’s commitment to national food security and grassroots development. “This is more than just a training exercise, it is a movement to empower communities, restore confidence in agriculture, and equip farmers with modern tools for resilience and profitability,” she stated.

According to Arukwe, the 2,000 beneficiaries received practical training in climate-smart agriculture, agribusiness management, post-harvest handling, and market access strategies. The programme also included mentorship to help participants apply the new knowledge directly to their farms and agribusiness ventures, ensuring long-term impact.

She explained that the training was specifically designed to tackle major challenges faced by smallholder farmers, such as post-harvest losses, poor soil management, and limited access to markets. By addressing these issues, the Foundation aims to enhance sustainability and support increased food output in the Northeast region, aligning with national efforts to reduce food inflation and strengthen local production.

“The Gombe cluster is one of the 17 clusters nationwide where the Foundation trained a total of 15,000 vulnerable farmers in two phases,” Arukwe added. The initiative is expected to contribute to economic stability, job creation, and rural development, while encouraging young people to reconsider agriculture as a viable source of income and self-reliance through agribusiness opportunities.

FG, UNICEF to give nutrition support to 300000 children

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has announced that the government is collaborating with both local and international partners to improve the quality of diet for vulnerable children across Nigeria.

According to the ministry, a special intervention programme is ongoing in 20 high-risk states aimed at providing Small Quantity Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements (SQ-LNS) to about 300,000 children who are currently at risk of malnutrition in different communities across the country.

The SQ-LNS, described as a fortified lipid-based paste or spread, is designed to complement the diet of children between six and 23 months with essential nutrients. The supplement is intended to help prevent micronutrient deficiencies and stunting, which are major public health concerns in Nigeria.

Experts say the SQ-LNS for children contains protein and lipid macronutrients as well as 24 micronutrients, including 13 vitamins and 11 minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium.

Speaking in an interview with THISDAY, the Director of Nutrition Information System, Dr Lekan Olubajo, explained that the capacity training initiative is targeted at protecting children, especially those under five years of age, from malnourishment.

He said, “Malnutrition and wasting are about 40 percent right now in the country. We have under-five children who are malnourished, and the malnutrition is becoming one of the public health challenges in Nigeria.”

Olubajo further stated that the government is taking practical steps to tackle this issue, particularly among children aged between six and 23 months.

He explained that the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Evidence Action, and other relevant stakeholders, has developed an SQ-LNS training manual to ensure standardisation in the training of healthcare practitioners nationwide.

“The first stage of the train-the-trainers programme is being carried out at the national level. There will also be state-level and facility-level training where health workers will be equipped to administer these commodities to the children,” he said.

According to him, “We are doing a training of trainers on this commodity to address malnutrition in Nigeria. We have 70 persons here representing both partners and 20 states. We have two people from each of these states, and they will go back and cascade the training to the local communities.”

Olubajo added that the programme has been carefully designed to build the capacity of all health workers involved in micronutrient deficiency control in Nigeria, both at the facility and community levels.

“This will significantly contribute to the reduction of micronutrient deficiencies among children aged six to 23 months and the overall reduction of anaemia and high mortality in the country,” he said.

Country Director of Evidence Action, one of the implementing partners, Mr Tope Ogunbi, said the distribution of SQ-LNS is a new intervention. He explained that most health workers across states are yet to receive proper training on how to administer the supplement.

“So, the reason why we’re here on Monday is to train a pool of national trainers who are drawn from the Ministry of Health, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and other agencies, ministries, and parastatals at the national level,” he said.
