0

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has trained 2,100 adolescent girls in life skills and reproductive health across Bauchi State. The training, supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), was conducted in Bauchi, Dass, Darazo, and Ganjuwa Local Government Areas between August 19 and 26.

FOMWAN programme coordinator, Fatsuma Mohammad, said on Monday in Bauchi that the exercise was aimed at equipping young girls with vital knowledge and practical skills. According to her, “The exercise is designed to expose the girls to negotiation, decision-making, and information and communication skills on early marriage to enable them to make informed choices about their future.”

She explained that 20 training facilitators were engaged to conduct the sessions, which had 105 girls per cluster. The programme, she noted, would help strengthen advocacy against harmful traditional practices and empower girls to reach their full potential as future leaders.

“The topics focused on teenage pregnancy and the dangers of early marriage, often referred to as ‘children mothering children’,” she said.

Ms Mohammad added that FOMWAN has integrated life skills and reproductive health education for adolescent girls into its annual work plan to ensure sustainability and wider community impact, in collaboration with UNICEF and other stakeholders.

Oluremi Tinubu gives N50,000 grants to 500 women in Katsina

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, in partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation, has disbursed N50,000 business grants to 500 small businesswomen in Katsina State.

The event, held in Katsina on Monday, marked another phase of the small business recapitalisation programme designed to promote economic development at the grassroots level and support women entrepreneurs.

Disbursing the grants, the wife of the Katsina State Governor, Zulaihat Radda, said the programme carried deep meaning for the people, stressing that it would strengthen local economies and empower women to become self-reliant.

“This programme has been rolled out across states of the federation to ensure that hardworking women and families are given the support they need to build a better tomorrow,” Mrs Radda said.

She described small businesses as the backbone of the Nigerian economy, explaining that they sustain households, educate children, provide essential services, and create employment opportunities.

“Yet, too often, they struggle to access the capital required to grow, compete, and withstand economic shocks. Sadly, enterprises owned by women are the most affected,” she added.

Mrs Radda explained that the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), a pet project of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, was established to address these challenges and promote women’s empowerment through access to funding, mentorship, and entrepreneurship training.

She noted that through the initiative, many women across the country had received business mentorship and resources that helped them grow from small roadside traders into sustainable entrepreneurs.

“Today, with this recapitalisation grant, we’re building on that progress by giving many more women the opportunity to strengthen their enterprises and expand their dreams,” she said.

Mrs Radda added that the success stories of the beneficiaries would serve as proof that empowerment works and would inspire other women to believe in their potential.

One of the beneficiaries, Amina Abbas from Batsari Local Government Area, commended Mrs Tinubu and the governor’s wife for their continuous support and encouragement toward women’s economic development.

Rivers NUT urges Fubara to recruit 20,000 teachers

Rivers State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving teachers’ welfare under the present administration as part of efforts to encourage and motivate educators who play a key role in shaping the future of the state’s children.

Speaking at the 2025 World Teachers Day celebration organized by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Rivers State Wing, held at Isaac Boro Park, Port Harcourt, the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Dr. Siminalayi Fubara, DSSRS, praised teachers for their transformative role in society. The Governor, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. Mrs. Ndidi Chikanele Utchay, described teachers as nation builders whose dedication and resilience are vital to the development of the country.

“Today, we celebrate not just teachers but nation builders, dedicated men and women who plant seeds of knowledge, character, and vision into our children, shaping a brighter future for Rivers State and Nigeria. Your work is the foundation upon which our society thrives and for this, we honor you all,” she said.

The Governor emphasized that his administration will continue to provide incentives and welfare support to teachers as a way of acknowledging their impact on education and human capital development. The event attracted teachers from various local government areas who joined in the celebration of their profession.

Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Rivers State Wing, Comrade Donatus Samuel (JP), said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” aligns with the belief that the strength of a nation depends on the education of its citizens, which begins with teachers.

He commended the Fubara-led administration for several initiatives that have improved the welfare of teachers, including the regular and timely payment of salaries, the 13th-month bonus, the release of backlog promotions, the implementation of the harmonized retirement age of 40 years of service or 65 years of age, the payment of a minimum wage of N85,000, the appointment of teachers as permanent secretaries, and the completion of the Teachers’ House.

However, Comrade Samuel appealed to the Governor to address the shortage of teachers in some schools by recruiting at least 20,000 new teachers to fill the existing gaps. He also assured that teachers in the state remain committed to delivering quality education to all students.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Ipeghari G. Igenewari, commended teachers for their lasting impact on students, stating that “what teachers invest into the lives of students is eternal.” He encouraged them to promote teamwork and collaboration in their profession.

The highlight of the 2025 World Teachers Day celebration was the conferment of awards, including the “Chalkboard to the State” and the “Teachers Golden Pen Award,” presented to His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, DSSRS. The event also featured a match pass competition among teachers from different local government areas, where Ikwerre LGA took first place, Obio/Akpor LGA came second, and Oyigbo LGA placed third.

FG confirms 1.47 million farmers covered under agricultural insurance scheme

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has announced that over 1.47 million smallholder farmers across Nigeria are now covered under agricultural insurance schemes.

The Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Olusegun Omosehin, made this known in Maiduguri during the 2025 stakeholders’ retreat of the House Committee on Insurance and Actuarial Matters. The event was held under the theme “Navigating the New Era of Insurance Regulation—Understanding the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025.”

According to Mr Omosehin, the agricultural insurance coverage was made possible through the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL). He explained that the initiative aims to improve resilience and productivity in the agricultural sector, with a target of reaching 3.6 million farmers by 2026.

“Recent statistics show that over 1.47 million smallholder farmers have been covered under NIRSAL’s agricultural insurance schemes, with a target of 3.6 million by 2026,” he said. “In the second quarter of 2025, 250,000 farmers were insured across eight states under federal initiatives.”

Mr Omosehin noted that agricultural insurance has begun to make measurable impacts on productivity among Nigerian farmers. He cited that in North-Central Nigeria, insured rice farmers recorded 11 per cent higher productivity than their uninsured counterparts, averaging 20 bags per hectare compared to 18 bags.

He also pointed out that specific programmes, such as the Kaduna ginger farmers who received payouts under the NAGS-AP scheme after losing more than 90 per cent of their crops, have proven the value of insurance in stabilizing rural livelihoods.

Additionally, livestock and encroachment insurance in Sokoto, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Plateau States has reportedly reduced farmer-herder conflicts. “Insurance provides a vital tool to de-risk agriculture and empower farmers to invest confidently,” Mr Omosehin stated.

He called for closer cooperation among lawmakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation of the NIIRA 2025.

Mr Omosehin explained that the NIIRA consolidates previously fragmented insurance laws into a unified framework that strengthens regulation, protects consumers, and supports innovation in Nigeria’s insurance industry.

“The law has been passed, but the real work has just begun. We urge the committee to ensure MDAs comply with compulsory insurance provisions,” he said.

He urged all stakeholders to align legislative, regulatory, and operational efforts to make NIIRA 2025 a key driver of national economic growth.

Nigeria achieves breakthrough with rainfed wheat cultivation in Plateau

Nigeria has achieved a major breakthrough in its drive to end heavy dependence on wheat imports with the successful cultivation of rainfed wheat in Plateau State, a development the Federal Government says will reshape food security and economic growth.

At the Second National Rainfed Wheat Farmers’ Field Day held in Kuru, Jos, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, described the achievement as “nothing short of transformative,” emphasizing that wheat production will no longer be restricted to irrigated areas.

“With rainfed wheat, farmers in Jos, Mambila, and Obudu highlands can now grow wheat during the rainy season naturally, sustainably, and profitably. This innovation opens the door to a future where Nigeria’s wheat demand can be met by our own farmers,” the Minister said.

Kyari commended the Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI) for developing the new wheat varieties, calling it a “true testament to Nigerian ingenuity and scientific excellence.” He expressed concern that Nigeria imported wheat worth ₦970.22 billion between October 2022 and September 2023, describing the situation as “worrisome, unacceptable, and unsustainable.”

The Minister highlighted that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR’s Renewed Hope Agenda, agriculture has become a presidential priority. He outlined key initiatives including the deployment of over 2,000 tractors and combined harvesters nationwide in the first phase of the Renewed Hope Mechanisation Initiative.

Other measures include the recapitalisation of the Bank of Agriculture (BoA) and the operationalisation of the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) to enhance access to agricultural credit and boost investment in agribusiness. The government has also launched a Post-Harvest Management Initiative aimed at reducing losses, upgrading grain silos, and improving national food reserves.

Kyari urged farmers, researchers, and private investors to work together in expanding rainfed wheat cultivation to hundreds of thousands of hectares across the country. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing certified seeds, mechanisation services, and reliable markets for farmers.

“Every grain of Nigerian wheat planted is a step toward national dignity, a signal that we can feed our people, grow our economy, and stand tall among nations,” Kyari stated.
