YEIDEP to empower youths in agriculture, tech, and creative economy

Comrade Kennedy Iyere, the Coordinator-General of the Youth Economic Intervention and Deradicalization Program (YEIDEP), has emphasised that the project is focused on empowering Nigerian youths through agriculture and entrepreneurship. Speaking during the YEIDEP convention held in Ibadan, Iyere shared details of the initiative.

According to him, the programme is not limited to farmers alone but is designed to involve young people in the broader agricultural value chain. “Not just farmers only, but our priority is to engage youths in the agricultural sector—agriculture, food business, food entrepreneurship, and then agro-allied,” he said. “That was why we created what we call the Cooperative Youth Farmers and Agro-Allied Entrepreneurs Program—Cooperative Youth Farmers and Allied Entrepreneurship Program rather.”

Iyere explained that the Cooperative Youth Farmers and Allied Entrepreneurship Program is a strategic step to ensure job creation while tackling food insecurity across the country. He stated that “food security is national security,” adding that addressing hunger will help reduce the rising rate of crime. “If you eliminate hunger, the hunger crisis, the hunger situation we have today in this country—if it is dealt with squarely—crime rate will drop. You don’t need fasting, you don’t need prayer, you don’t need any kind of extra effort,” he noted.

He described food poverty as the most severe form of hardship facing Nigerian families today. “Right now, families cannot feed, which is what we call the worst form of poverty. Food poverty is the worst form of poverty. And in a country where a meal that is even substandard is a luxury for so many families, we have a humanitarian emergency or crisis in the food sector. That’s the truth. Hunger is real, and we have never had it this bad,” Iyere stated.

Explaining why agriculture remains the major focus of YEIDEP, Iyere said, “You don’t need special skills to grow corn, maize, and other crops.” He added that beyond agriculture, the programme also explores other key sectors like technology, entertainment, and the creative economy.

Addressing the youth directly, Iyere urged them to take responsibility for building their own future instead of relying on political leaders. “My message for the youth is simple: nobody can build for you a future you are not willing to build or create for yourself,” he said.

He criticised the political class for keeping the youth in poverty to control them during elections. “It is a thing of shame believing that the old people who lead you as governors, senators, and House members can fix this country for you when you have the strength. The power of the ballot is your force. You can regulate what happens because democracy is all about the numbers. But they have kept you in poverty because they want to price and buy you cheap for votes.”

Iyere concluded that YEIDEP represents a major movement of change. “This program is a revolution. It’s a tsunami. It’s a sword. It’s a wave. And this wave has no respect for position. We are sweeping. It’s a moving train. It’s a ship. It’s a tornado. And this is a volcano. And as it literally moves, the people that have destroyed our commonwealth and rendered you economically irrelevant and useless are afraid because they know the truth is beginning to sink into your minds.”

YEIDEP accuses CBN of embezzling public funds in past programmes

0

Comrade Kennedy Iyere, Coordinator-General of the Youth Economic Intervention and Deradicalization Program (YEIDEP), has described the initiative as the biggest government-backed youth empowerment intervention in the history of Nigeria.

He made this known during an interview at the YEIDEP convention in Ibadan, in a report obtained by Nigeriastartupact.ng on Sunday.

Speaking on the program, Iyere explained that YEIDEP is a major government intervention aimed at tackling youth unemployment, deradicalizing young Nigerians, and making them positive contributors to national economic development. According to him, “YEIDEP is government intervention to tackle youth unemployment, deradicalize them, and make them positive contributors towards economic development. That is it. It is a project I created and made available to the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, and it became adopted. It is the biggest intervention program in the history of Nigeria.”

Iyere noted that the YEIDEP is expected to reach about 20 million Nigerian youths and young women by May 2027. He revealed that about 8 million people have already been registered under the scheme, which targets citizens across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

“There’s no program of government that has been so designed in such a way that the civil society and private stakeholders are actively involved and have the right to determine how the program is run or implemented,” he added.

When asked why YEIDEP is partnering with commercial banks instead of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Iyere said the choice was deliberate due to the CBN’s alleged past record of mismanagement and lack of transparency in handling public funds. He stated, “The Central Bank has a bad reputation for embezzling public funds. No apologies yet. Now, we’ve had programs like NIRSAL and the Anchor Borrowers Program. The Anchor Borrowers Program had government bills valued at ₦1.1 trillion. It was domiciled with the Central Bank, and the money was embezzled. NIRSAL was also coordinated by the Central Bank, and the money got embezzled. They diverted the funds for private use, to the point that they even created a fake microfinance bank.”

Iyere further explained that he opted for a more transparent and accountable approach by involving commercial banks directly in the implementation of the program. “I made up my mind that there must be an accountable and transparent process in the implementation of this scheme, such that every average Nigerian will be part of it,” he said. “A process is bound to succeed when the people for whom an intervention is meant to benefit are allowed to be part of those that will drive the process. That is why we aligned directly with the commercial banks.”

He listed participating financial institutions such as UBA, Union Bank, First Bank, Fidelity Bank, Zenith Bank, Access Bank, Guarantee Trust Bank, Ecobank, and Lotus Bank. Iyere emphasized that the direct collaboration with these commercial banks will ensure effective delivery, transparency, and accountability in handling public funds, adding that “these banks can never take money meant for the people. The people know where to go and who to hold accountable. Unlike the CBN.”

Edo confirms 4,000 edostar teachers, hires 500 new

The Edo State Government has announced the absorption of 4,000 volunteer teachers under the EdoStar Teaching Programme and the recruitment of 500 new teachers to strengthen the state’s education system.

Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, made this known on Sunday in Benin during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, themed “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession.”

Iyamu said the move reflected Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to rewarding dedication and addressing the shortage of teachers in public primary and secondary schools.

“Come October 15, we are going to present letters of appointment to about 4,000 EdoStar volunteer teachers who have been teaching for the past three years,” he said. “In addition, the government will recruit another 500 teachers into the system.”

The commissioner explained that the gesture would end the era of prolonged probation for volunteer teachers and help bridge the manpower gap in schools across the state.

“Even an apprentice does not train for three years without confirmation,” he added, assuring that the teachers would receive their appointment letters at a public ceremony in Government House.

Iyamu also highlighted the government’s investments in infrastructure and training. He revealed that the state had built over 68 schools in less than one year and trained more than 6,000 teachers in digital and technical skills, including robotics and artificial intelligence, to enhance classroom delivery.

“When we build schools without teachers, they are just empty buildings,” he said. “We are investing in people who will shape our children’s future.”

He further announced that the government had institutionalised Teachers’ Fitness Day, to be marked every October 4, to promote teachers’ well-being. The commissioner added that Governor Okpebholo had approved the introduction of the Best Teacher Award for outstanding performance, to be celebrated every November 25.

Earlier, Mr Bernard Ajobiewe, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Edo Wing, commended the state government for implementing the N75,000 minimum wage, promoting teachers, and renovating schools.

However, he called for urgent recruitment of more teachers in rural areas. “If we renovate schools and there are no teachers, we have done nothing,” he said.

Ajobiewe also expressed concern over the dilapidated state of facilities in many schools across the state, especially in rural communities. He urged the government to implement financial benefits for promoted teachers and pay their accrued arrears.

The NUT chairman also opposed the proposed handing over of schools to missionaries, arguing that such a move could create inequities and make education inaccessible for marginalised groups.

On her part, Mrs Ebanehita Omonzane, Chairperson of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), urged teachers to continue shaping young minds with patience and integrity, describing them as “true nation builders.”

Delivering the keynote lecture, Comrade Joe Iyalekhue, retired Principal Assistant Secretary-General of the NUT, said collaboration remained key to effective teaching in modern education. “No teacher can succeed in isolation. Collaboration, not competition, is the future of education,” he said.

YEIDEP targets 20 million youths to create 100000 entrepreneurs by 2026

0

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment and economic growth through the Youth Economic Intervention and De-Radicalization Programme (YEIDEP), an initiative designed to create opportunities and reduce unemployment among Nigerian youths.

From information shared with Nigeriastartupact.ng on Sunday, Mrs. Warrens Bekearedebo, Director of Finance and Accounts at the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and Chairperson of YEIDEP, represented the Minister for Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande Wisdom. She said the initiative is a partnership between the Federal Government and Youth Off the Street Initiative (YOTSI), with Comrade Kennedy E.A. serving as the convener.

According to her, “One of the notable programmes of the Youth Economic Intervention and Development Programme is to empower youth. Now, we have so many youth initiatives in the ministry, but one of them that stands out is the YEIDEP programme, and the reason is because it is targeted at boosting agriculture to increase social security, eradicate extremism, reduce crime, and create entrepreneurship.”

She added that the YEIDEP programme aligns with two key points of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “In the Renewed Hope Agenda, we have food security through the boosting of agriculture, and we also have eradication or reduction of poverty. With this programme in place, we are going to be able to achieve those priorities of Mr. President,” she explained.

Mrs. Bekearedebo noted that YEIDEP is currently holding stakeholder meetings across the federation, with international donors showing strong support. “Our donors are from outside the country, and with this programme, for you to be properly empowered, the vision of Mr. President, carried out by the Ministry of Youth Development, will also be achieved,” she said.

Highlighting the progress of the initiative, she explained that YEIDEP is being implemented in tranches. “Our first tranche is targeting 20 million youth. Right now, we have close to 8 million youth on board, and we believe that before June 2026, we would have gotten over 20 million youth,” she stated.

Encouraging young Nigerians to participate, Mrs. Bekearedebo said the programme has the potential to produce thousands of successful entrepreneurs. “This opportunity can give birth to more than 100,000 entrepreneurs that will become conglomerates in the near future. Businesses start very small, but with a lot of inputs and visionaries like our financial members, they’re going to be partnering with these businesses, these entrepreneurs, to train them in other areas,” she said.

She further mentioned that YEIDEP is not limited to agriculture alone. “Apart from agriculture, we have the creative industry — like the Legends of Nollywood — partnering with us too. So we’re developing talents, we’re boosting innovation, and we’re also driving diversification,” she said.

Mrs. Bekearedebo concluded by urging Nigerian youths to embrace the opportunity, describing it as “time-saving, for today and for the future.”

FG begins campaign against irregular migration in Nigeria

0

The Federal Government has launched a nationwide Sensitisation Programme Against Irregular Migration aimed at educating Nigerian youth on the dangers of illegal migration and promoting sustainable opportunities within the country.

This was contained in a statement signed by Omolara Esan, Director of Information and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Youth Development, on Sunday.

The Southern Zone edition of the programme was held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from 3rd to 4th October 2025. It brought together key stakeholders from government institutions, security agencies, and civil society organisations to address the growing challenge of irregular migration among Nigerian youth.

Speaking on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, the Head of Migration and Climate Action Department, Ms Grace Leleh, described irregular migration as a worsening crisis caused by unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and misinformation about life abroad.

She explained that thousands of young Nigerians continue to fall victim to human trafficking, forced labour, organ harvesting, and modern slavery while attempting dangerous journeys through routes such as the Mediterranean.

The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to reversing this trend through strategic youth empowerment programmes aligned with the National Youth Policy (2019). These include vocational and skill development training to promote self-reliance, Waste-to-Wealth initiatives to enhance economic empowerment, and work experience programmes to bridge the education and employment gap.

Other initiatives mentioned are the ₦110 billion National Youth Investment Fund supporting young entrepreneurs, agricultural innovation and start-up grants, and the establishment of Youth Development Centres and Youth Villages across all 774 local government areas. The policy also includes 30% youth inclusion in governance and nationwide programmes on digital literacy, health, entertainment, climate action, and data protection.

“These interventions are designed not only to deter irregular migration but to provide viable, home-grown opportunities for young Nigerians to succeed within their own country,” the Minister stated.

In his goodwill message, the Ogun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Olanrewaju Ogunyinka, stressed the importance of urgent collective action to address irregular migration. “Irregular migration endangers lives, drains human capital, and undermines national development. We must collectively protect our youth from these risks,” he said.

Representing the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Mrs Jimoh Abosede cautioned that young people, especially students and job seekers, are the most vulnerable to traffickers who lure them with false promises of prosperity abroad. “We urge all young Nigerians to verify travel offers and avoid secret arrangements that could endanger their lives,” she advised.

Also speaking, CSI Olajide Osifeso, representing the Ogun State Controller of Immigration, noted that while the desire for a better life is understandable, unsafe migration routes are dangerous. “Seeking a better life is not a crime,” he said, “but doing so through illegal means is a perilous gamble that often ends in tragedy.”

The sensitisation campaign will continue nationwide, reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to empowering Nigerian youth and protecting them from the dangers of irregular migration.
