Plateau introduces CBT screening for Mutfwang legacy scholarship

0

Plateau State has taken a new step in its scholarship process as the Hon. Commissioner for Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Kachollom Pyam Gang, announced the introduction of a Computer-Based Test (CBT) in the Mutfwang Legacy Scholarship program. According to her, the CBT was necessary to verify the results students presented during the first screening stage.

She expressed concern that some students with excellent grades in WAEC and NECO examinations might have secured them from what she described as “passing centers” where candidates pay to obtain good results. Dr. Pyam explained that the scholarship requires five distinctions, and the CBT is now used to compare candidates’ performances with the results they submitted.

The Commissioner revealed that the exercise lasted two days, and the board had to change the set of questions in the second round. “The process has been successful so far,” she stated. She added that the results would be carefully reviewed to give every candidate a fair opportunity, especially those from less privileged backgrounds, ensuring they benefit from the scholarship without relying on connections.

Dr. Gang expressed appreciation to parents for their patience in bringing their children for the CBT examination. She confirmed that while about 600 students applied, only 200 will be selected. Interestingly, she noted that candidates who did not present distinctions but showed strong CBT performance could stand a better chance than those who had distinctions.

She further clarified that the scholarship’s qualification standards require distinctions, either A or B grades, in five science subjects, including Mathematics and English Language. Speaking on sustainability, she said, “This is the first batch. We’ll see how it goes, and if funds are available, another batch will go next year. But if there are no funds, the first batch will have to graduate before we admit another batch.”

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Scholarship Board, Mrs. Nankus Adams Ngwalang, expressed gratitude to the state government under Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for introducing the “Time is Now” initiative. She emphasized the importance of considering the poor in scholarship awards and assured that the 200 successful candidates would be duly notified.

September18, 2025 – Katsina State Enterprise Development Agency (KASEDA) has reported major progress in driving inclusive economic transformation through Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises between 2023 and 2025. The Director-General of KASEDA, Aisha Aminu Malunfashi, disclosed that 23,912 beneficiaries have directly received support through its programmes, with over 200,000 new jobs projected across the state.

She made this known on September 14, 2025, while presenting a paper titled “Driving Inclusive Economic Transformation through MSMEs” during the high-level consultation on security and governance convened by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda. Malunfashi explained that KASEDA’s interventions have been central to strengthening entrepreneurship, empowering women and youth, and expanding financial inclusion in Katsina State.

According to her, Katsina currently hosts more than 1.7 million MSMEs organized into 823 clusters across agriculture, trade, crafts, services, and the fast-growing digital and creative industries. She said these enterprises provide livelihoods for millions and serve as entry points for women and youth into the economy.

Highlighting the flagship Integrated MSME Development Program, she said it is designed to reach 500,000 enterprises across all 34 LGAs, focusing on women, youth, startups, and entrepreneurs in conflict-affected communities. She noted that the programme prioritizes financial inclusion, digital innovation, agro-processing value chains, and advisory services delivered through the DIKKO Business Development Services Corps.

Malunfashi revealed that KASEDA has facilitated over ₦5 billion in MSME financing, trained thousands of entrepreneurs in business and digital skills, and conducted an MSME census covering 600,000 businesses while mapping 50,000 clusters for investment planning. She emphasized human capital development through entrepreneurship academies such as the Dikko Social Innovation Academy and the KASEDA Digital Academy, which jointly train more than 500 participants annually.

She further stated that the annual Katsina MSME Awards and Fair disbursed ₦10 million in grants to 200 vendors in 2025, creating visibility and opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Reaffirming the agency’s commitment, she listed ongoing initiatives, including a ₦3.4 billion MSME Revolving Fund managed with the Bank of Industry and Sterling Bank, which has supported more than 3,000 entrepreneurs across the 34 LGAs.

Another key intervention is the Shared Industrial Development Centre, upgraded with SMEDAN at a cost of ₦1 billion. The facility now supports textiles, ICT, packaging, and agribusiness sectors, with about 50 entrepreneurs using it daily.

She recalled that over 10,000 MSMEs benefitted from World Bank KT-CARES grants, with 234 enterprises receiving IT toolkits. In addition, the Mechatronics Apprentices Support Program is training 3,000 youths in automobile technology, offering stipends and starter packs.

Malunfashi stressed that women and youth remain central to KASEDA’s agenda. She pointed to the Katsina Graduate Entrepreneurship Fund, which offers final-year tertiary students seed grants and interest-free loans ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦500,000. Between 1,500 and 2,000 students are expected to benefit each year, enabling them to start businesses after graduation.

She added that the DIRWYFI Initiative targets 8,000 rural women and youth annually with training and resources to help lift families out of poverty. Traditional industries are also being modernized. In Kayauki and Rafin Dadi, kilishi producers are receiving technical support, while hula producers in Daura, Mani, and Mashi LGAs are being assisted to improve standards and income.

The DG explained that Cassava and Gari Processing Centres in Wagini and Batsari are empowering farmers by increasing processing capacity and linking them to agribusiness value chains. She said these centres contribute to job creation and food security. She added that the Food Bank Loan Project is providing thousands of households with regular food loan support, strengthening nutrition, supporting community resilience, and creating opportunities for nano food vendors and small-scale businesses in the food sector.

She disclosed that more than 500 women and youth have participated in Entrepreneur Mindset Reset Workshops on innovation and sustainability. The Graduate Entrepreneurship Fund also continues to support final-year students with take-off capital.

Summarizing KASEDA’s impact between 2023 and 2025, Malunfashi said the agency has directly supported 23,912 beneficiaries through financing, training, digital empowerment, and value chain development programmes. These interventions, she emphasized, are projected to create more than 200,000 jobs and position Katsina as one of Nigeria’s leading hubs for entrepreneurship and inclusive economic growth.

She concluded by stressing that these achievements were made possible under Governor Radda’s vision of a prosperous Katsina powered by entrepreneurship, with strong support from NGOs, cooperatives, private sector actors, donor agencies, and international partners. The programme was launched at the Executive Council Chambers of the Governor’s Office and is aimed at strengthening human capital development and promoting sustainable development across the state and beyond.

Speaking at the launch, Barrister Lawal said social protection has been made a key part of the state’s development agenda, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Benue Gov flags off fertilizer distribution to create millionaire farmers

0

Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming agriculture in the state, unveiling a bold plan to produce hundreds of millionaire farmers within the next two years.

The Governor made the declaration in Makurdi at the official flag-off of the 2025 cropping season and distribution of subsidized fertilizers and farm inputs. He emphasised that his government’s priority is to reposition Benue as Nigeria’s agricultural powerhouse by supporting young farmers with improved inputs and mechanisation.

Governor Alia, who apologised for the delay in flagging off the season, explained that the state had finalised arrangements to pay over ₦5 billion owed to genuine fertilizer suppliers from the previous season. According to him, the delay in payment was caused by fraudulent practices of some vendors in 2024.

“We want to make hundreds of millionaires from farming. Young farmers should take advantage of this support. Farming is where our money is, and it is where Benue’s pride lies,” the Governor said.

He disclosed that the state had adopted a new agricultural calendar, which will see wet season farm inputs distributed between April and June, while dry season inputs will be distributed between November and January, to guarantee timely access for farmers.

As part of the 2025 programme, the state government is providing 9,000 metric tonnes, representing 600 truckloads of fertilizers, including NPK, Urea, and SSP, valued at ₦16.8 billion, with a 50 percent subsidy. Farmers will therefore access fertilizer at ₦22,500 per bag while the government covers the remaining cost.

Governor Alia also revealed that from December, no oranges will be exported out of Benue in raw form as the new fruit processing factory will mop up oranges and add value to local produce. He called on Benue youths to embrace farming to maintain the state’s leading position in soyabean production nationwide.

“This is your state. This is your Benue. Let us think differently, be patriotic, and make agriculture the pride of our land. Together, we will make Benue the agricultural powerhouse it is destined to be,” he stated.

The Governor announced that 300 bags of fertilizer would be given to widows present at the event, while farmer cooperatives were urged to ensure transparent distribution to members.

Delivering the Governor’s formal address, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Benjamin Ashaver, highlighted reforms aimed at eliminating corruption in farm input distribution.

“Henceforth, all fertilizer sales will be processed cashlessly through POS terminals at accredited centres, with payments made directly to suppliers’ accounts. These reforms will ensure only genuine farmers benefit from government subsidies. We are also building a credible farmers’ register and deploying a hybrid digital platform to enhance transparency, close extension service gaps, and provide real-time support to farmers,” Dr. Ashaver said.

He commended farmers for their resilience and urged them to adopt improved seeds and modern farming techniques rather than relying on local grains for planting.

On his part, the CEO of Star Fertilizer, Dr. Julius Atorough, assured stakeholders that adulterated fertilizer would no longer circulate in the state. He disclosed that the company had invested massively to revive the moribund Benue Fertilizer Plant and pledged to produce crop-specific fertilizers for Benue soil.

“From today, Benue farmers can be sure of getting quality fertilizers. We will establish outlets across the state to end the circulation of fake products. Hold us accountable for our promise,” Atorough said.

The Benue State House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Agriculture, Hon. Emmanuel Shimawua, described the distribution exercise as a vital support initiative for farmers and assured the Commissioner of Agriculture of the Assembly’s full backing.

Also speaking, the Ter Lobi, HRH Moses Anagende, commended the government’s efforts to address agricultural challenges and security concerns, noting that farmers in many areas are already feeling safer to return to their farms.
