ITF conducts exams for 30,000 artisans under SUPA programme

0

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has conducted examinations for trainees of its Skill-Up Artisans (SUPA) programme to equip Nigerian artisans with internationally recognised certifications. The initiative aims to improve job opportunities and ensure artisans meet global standards.

During an on-the-spot check at examination centres across the country on Wednesday, the Director-General and Chief Executive of ITF, Dr. Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun, highlighted the importance of credible examinations. He explained that the tests were administered by the Chartered Institute of Project Management of Nigeria (CIPMN).

“When you give training without examination, you have not done anything. And when you give an examination that is not quality enough, you cannot achieve the desired impact. This is why we are committed to credible testing and certification for our trainees,” Dr. Ogun said.

He stated that about 100,000 trainees nationwide are part of the exercise, with 30,000 artisans sitting for the first round of examinations in project management. According to him, interpreters were provided at several centres to assist participants facing language barriers.

Dr. Ogun also revealed that the ITF has established 30 training centres across Nigeria, with plans to create more facilities to meet the increasing demand. He stressed that internationally recognised certifications would help reduce unemployment and address socio-economic issues by equipping artisans with globally competitive skills.

The DG added that the programme would strengthen the workforce by preparing Nigerian artisans to work on local and international projects, boosting the nation’s economic growth.

Katsina Gov, Qatar Charity empower vulnerable residents

0

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has launched the distribution of economic empowerment items to 160 orphans and vulnerable individuals across the state in partnership with Qatar Charity. The flag-off ceremony took place at Muhammadu Buhari House, Katsina, where various items aimed at boosting small businesses and self-reliance were handed over to beneficiaries.

The items distributed include 20 tricycles, 20 tricycle cargoes, 20 grinding machines, and 100 sewing machines. The initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to reduce poverty and support vulnerable citizens.

Speaking at the event, Governor Radda said the program goes beyond providing physical equipment, stressing that it is about restoring dignity and creating lasting opportunities for those in need.

“Orphans, widows, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals: You are not forgotten. You are seen. You are valued,” the Governor said.

He urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the empowerment items to establish small businesses, earn a stable income, and provide for their families. Radda highlighted that hard work and discipline are key to achieving financial independence and improving livelihoods.

“The empowerment items are more than material support – they are tools for transformation and steps toward economic independence,” he added.

The Governor assured residents that his administration will continue to promote inclusion and develop programs that target poverty reduction, including social safety nets, vocational training, microfinance schemes, and community-based initiatives.

Governor Radda also commended Qatar Charity Nigeria for its continued humanitarian efforts in the state. “Your work is planting seeds of change, and we are deeply grateful,” he said, pledging to expand similar programs to reach more orphans, widows, and vulnerable people.

FG to crackdown on fake certificates with credential verification

0

The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified its crackdown on certificate racketeering and the abuse of academic honours. As part of this move, it has announced the nationwide enforcement of strict regulations on academic credential verification, which will take effect from October 6, 2025.

This directive was revealed in a service-wide circular issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, dated August 8, 2025. A copy of the circular was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to the circular, all Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and higher institutions across Nigeria, whether civilian, military, public, or private, must begin a thorough and structured verification of academic credentials for all current staff and new recruits. This process will be carried out through the National Credential Verification Service (NCVS), a key component of the National Education Repository and Databank (NERD) programme.

The circular stated that, going forward, every new recruitment must include an NCVS clearance confirming the authenticity of each academic credential presented. This clearance will be mandatory before any appointment is confirmed.

The NCVS clearance will contain a National Credential Number (NCN) unique to each verified credential, as well as security codes for the associated documents. These measures are designed to make every academic qualification identifiable, traceable, verifiable, and validatable.

Senator Akume emphasized in the circular that this reform represents a major step in combating fake degrees, forged certificates, and other forms of academic fraud. He stated that it marks a departure from the traditional practice of relying solely on institutions or agencies to verify documents, which has often been compromised. Instead, this system introduces a nationwide quality assurance process that operates independently and securely.

The policy is backed by Section 10(1) of the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions Act 1985), which governs national education standards and seeks to protect academic integrity. Enforcement of this new directive has been assigned to the newly established NERD programme, which was first proposed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in May 2023.

The NCVS was officially introduced in March 2025 by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, after the Federal Executive Council approved his memorandum. This approval led to a National Proclamation and Declaration of Effectiveness for the NERD programme.

During the launch, Dr. Alausa described the NCVS as a powerful tool for tackling the growing problem of fake qualifications and unearned honours. He said, “The launch of the NCVS is a systemic quality assurance check nationwide to curtail academic fraud which threatens the integrity of the education sector due to the activities of merchants of fake degrees, qualification fraud, phoney certificates, as well as bogus unearned honours from unaccredited institutions and diploma mills.”

Speaking further on the development, Ms. Haula Galadima, the Executive Director in charge of Communication and Cybersecurity for the NERD programme, confirmed in an email that all services under the NERD programme are now fully operational. She urged post-secondary schools, tertiary institutions, MDAs, and the organized private sector to comply with the federal directive by registering their NERD Focal Persons, Records Officers, and Digitisation Officers on the agency’s official website, ned.gov.ng/onboarding.

According to her, “NERD is a quality assurance tool. NERD is a federation initiative. NERD is the federation’s standard for higher education digitisation with the objective of protecting national security and prestige, education integrity, and digitally enhancing the economic values of Nigeria’s education for global competitiveness.”

Galadima explained that one of the core functions of NERD is to oversee the issuance of the National Student Number (NSN), the National Credential Number (NCN), and the National Document Number (NDN). These identifiers will ensure that every legitimate academic award or honour from an accredited Nigerian institution can be instantly traced and verified.

She added, “Such records will enable NERD to host the National Database of Resource Persons, where every genuine honour can be instantly verified.”

Addressing the root of the problem, Galadima highlighted why fake certificates have persisted for so long. “Fake degrees, fake academic titles, and unearned honours persist because culprits know that the process of being found out is laborious. There are numerous qualified institutions, but no one can rule out the possibility of collusion by a few compromised individuals within some of those institutions,” she said.

She went on to explain how the federal government’s solution addresses this issue. “What the federal government has done is to create the nation’s official one-stop shop for data consistency that operates as an interconnection of decentralised systems. So, the various systems are still decentralised. Each system remains autonomous. But Nigeria now has a tool to facilitate organic digital cooperation and coordination of these decentralised systems in the larger strategic interest of the nation.”

Galadima also provided further details about the structure and governance of NERD. She noted that, as approved by the Federal Executive Council, the programme is collectively owned by all post-secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria, along with their respective regulatory bodies.

“The NERD Governing Council is comprised of key leaders of the various arms that constitute the nation’s higher education sector and agencies with roles that are tangential to data privacy,” she stated.

Quoting sections of the NERD National Policy, Galadima said the Governing Council includes top executives from several bodies. These include the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), National Library, Committee of Vice Chancellors of all Nigerian Universities, Committee of Rectors of all Nigerian Polytechnics, Committee of Provosts of all Nigerian Colleges of Education, and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.

“The NERD Council is headed by the Honourable Minister of Education,” she added.

FG moves to certify creative media workers without degrees

0

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Fnipr, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting technical and vocational education in Nigeria, stressing the importance of prioritizing skills over paper qualifications.

Idris made this known during a courtesy visit in Abuja by the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Professor Idris Mohammed Bugaje, and executives of the Creative Media Sector Skills Council, led by its Chairperson, Hajiya Fatima Haliru.

Speaking at the event, Idris described the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiative under the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) as a major step towards empowering professionals who have gained expertise through practical experience but lack formal certifications.

“The message is clear: skills, not just degrees, will define the future of our workforce. Many of our young people are already talented in areas like photography, cinematography, and digital services. What this framework does is give them the recognition they deserve, opening pathways for higher training, employment, and entrepreneurship,” he said.

The Minister pledged to work closely with the NBTE and the Council to ensure the standardization and certification of skills within the creative sector. He noted that this move aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on job creation, youth empowerment, and economic growth.

Idris assured that the Federal Ministry of Information would collaborate with stakeholders across the broadcast, advertising, and information sectors to raise professional standards, create economic opportunities, and empower Nigeria’s youth to compete globally.

Responding, Professor Bugaje commended the Ministry for supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda and repositioning the information sector. He highlighted that the Creative Media Sector Skills Council, which was established seven months ago as the 20th in Nigeria, has already developed 24 new qualifications in areas like audio production, content creation, and photography.

Bugaje stressed the significance of the Recognition of Prior Learning scheme, which he said would certify informally trained professionals, including apprentices in media and broadcasting, by awarding them nationally recognized NSQ certificates.

Hajiya Fatima noted that the Creative Media Sector Skills Council has over 70% private sector involvement and is working in line with global best practices to ensure that industry needs drive skill development.

The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Chinasa Ogbodo, the Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority, Malam Abdulhameed Dembos, the Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, the Director General of the Voice of Nigeria, Malam Jibrin Baba Ndace, and the Director General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo.

Others present included the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, Malam Ali M. Ali, and the President of the Radio, Television and Theatre Workers Union, Prince Emeka Kalu.

Sanwo-Olu unveils women’s economic empowerment roadmap in Lagos

0

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing policies and partnerships that will empower women across the state to take bold steps in leadership and innovation. He made this known at the 2025 Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation WAPA Connect Conference held at Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island. The event was themed “Investing in Lagos Women, Investing in Growth.”

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu explained that the Lagos State government is focused on creating strong partnerships and crafting evidence-based policies aimed at producing visible and measurable results for women. According to him, the government’s mission is to provide women with essential tools, vocational training, and access to finance to help them grow sustainable businesses and achieve economic independence.

“Our mission is to equip women and their organisations with the necessary tools, training, and access to finance, enabling them to build sustainable futures, grow their businesses, and thrive. Our administration is supporting women through vocational training, access to funding, and initiatives that foster innovation, growth, and leadership, not just for the bold, but especially for widows, single mothers, young girls, and women with disabilities,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that investing in women is not just a charitable act but a crucial step towards economic growth and social justice. He added that no society can truly prosper if half of its population is excluded from progress. “That is why Lagos is dedicated to this journey: intentional, ongoing, and inclusive,” the Governor stated.

He highlighted that the WAPA Connect Conference serves as a platform where government officials, civil society organisations, private sector stakeholders, and women across Lagos come together to turn strategic plans into action. He also revealed that the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy Roadmap was recently launched to address challenges faced by women in different sectors, including entrepreneurship, agriculture, skill development, and emerging industries.

“This roadmap is our commitment to breaking down the systemic barriers that hinder women’s economic participation and to creating vast opportunities in entrepreneurship, skill development, traditional job markets, agriculture, and emerging industries. We are building on the successes of previous initiatives like our vocational training programmes and life-skills empowerment events, such as ‘WAPA takes Empowerment to Ibeju-Lekki, and much more,’” he explained.

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Funmi Omotoso, wife of the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, called for stronger collaborations to promote resilience, hope, courage, and innovation among women in Lagos and across Nigeria. She said her office will continue to focus on promoting financial literacy, encouraging self-reliance, and offering support to women through initiatives that also benefit families.

“The Women’s Economic Empowerment Policy roadmap is built on real-life experiences of women from all walks of life. This roadmap is our commitment, breaking down these technical barriers that hinder women from being able to participate and creating vast opportunities in entrepreneurship, field development, traditional health markets, agriculture, and the mining industries,” she added.

Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, Poverty Alleviation, and Wealth Creation, Princess Lara Olumegbon-Oyekan, also spoke at the event, commending the resilience and creativity of women in Lagos. She noted that women play a vital role in shaping families, communities, economies, and nations.

“Investing in Lagos women is investing in Lagos’ growth, and together, we must ensure no woman is left behind,” she said. Olumegbon-Oyekan pledged that the House Committee would continue to support initiatives that bring meaningful and lasting changes to the lives of women.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, emphasized that empowering women is a key driver of economic development. She explained that when individual lives are transformed, it creates a ripple effect that strengthens families, expands businesses, and grows the economy.

According to her, the Ministry, through its 19 Skills Acquisition Centres and various empowerment initiatives, has trained and supported thousands of women with vocational skills, business tools, and access to resources. She highlighted that these programmes cover areas such as health, nutrition, agriculture, and responses to gender-based violence.

“Through WAPA, we continue to transform lives and strengthen the role of women in Lagos State’s development. Lagos cannot grow without women, and women cannot thrive without deliberate investment,” she said.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, in her welcome address, described the WAPA Connect Conference as a hub for collaboration and progress. She said the event provides a platform for women, entrepreneurs, and professionals to connect, share ideas, and create opportunities for inclusion in the state’s growth agenda.

“WAPA Connect has become a vibrant platform where ideas are shared, partnerships are built, and opportunities are created. It is a space where women from all walks of life come together to inspire one another and to chart pathways for greater inclusion in our state’s growth story. Through empowerment programmes, skill acquisition centres, micro-enterprise support, and advocacy, we continue to expand possibilities for women and vulnerable groups across the state,” Onigbanjo stated.
