MTN launches CHAMPS Season 4 with 3-year LA 2028 Olympic Plan

0

MTN Nigeria has officially launched Season 4 of MTN CHAMPS in Lagos, unveiling a three-year development plan designed to prepare young Nigerian athletes for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The launch, held on Wednesday at the MTN Rooftop, comes after Nigeria failed to win a medal at the last Olympic Games in Paris. Organisers said the renewed focus on structured athlete development is aimed at closing gaps in preparation and improving long-term planning for international competitions.

At the event, 10 athletes discovered during Season 3 were presented with “Golden Tickets” into the Making of Champions (MoC) Athletics Academy. The athletes are Victory Aganya, Emmanuel Akolo, Michael Aniche, Rebecca Enilolobo, Chidimma Esomonu, Abdulfatah Oduwole, Nneoma Okonkwo, Mighty Otunola, Destiny Reuben and Kehinde Seriki. They join 20 athletes recruited in previous seasons, bringing the academy’s total roster to 30, the largest intake since its inception.

MTN also confirmed a three-year extension of its partnership with MoC, covering Seasons 4, 5 and 6 through the 2028 Olympic cycle. The agreement is expected to provide continuity for athletes in cadet, youth, junior and senior categories as they prepare for global events, including the World U20 Championships and other continental competitions.

Yahaya Ibrahim, Chief Technical Officer of MTN Nigeria, said the initiative aligns with national sports objectives.

“With Season 4 of MTN CHAMPS, one of our primary objectives is to align with the national sports agenda to ensure that the talent we discover today is standing on the podium at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games,” Mr Ibrahim stated. “Nigeria has the raw potential; MTN is proud to provide the structured pathway to turn that potential into global excellence.”

Season 4 is set to begin this month in line with the inter-house sports calendar in secondary schools. The competition will feature three regional qualifiers before a grand finale.

According to the schedule released, the MTN CHAMPS Athletics Classics will take place in Calabar from 5–7 March. The Continental Relays will be held in Jos from 26–28 March, while the Grand Finale is scheduled for Ibadan from 15–18 April.

MoC officials said the Calabar and Jos events could also support Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 World Relays, with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) considering the meets as part of qualification planning.

Tonobok Okowa, President of the AFN, said the federation would continue to provide technical support to the programme.

“I have had the opportunity to attend some of the editions of MTN CHAMPS, and the organisers have been doing very well. The impact has been evident, and we look forward to the role MTN CHAMPS will continue to play over the next three years in preparing our athletes for competitions on the continental and global stage.”

Olabisi Joseph, President of the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF), said the competition has widened opportunities for young athletes in schools across the country.

“The past three years of MTN CHAMPS have provided a platform for young athletes from Nigeria to compete. A lot of this talent would have been on the streets, wasting away, but because of MTN and MoC, we can harness the abundance of talent in our school system.”

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of MoC, Bambo Akani, described the new three-year agreement as a major step for Olympic planning in Nigeria.

“This is an absolutely monumental and historic move by MTN. Never in the history of Nigeria have athletes across all age groups had such certainty of a multi-year runway to prepare for international, continental and national competitions all the way to the Olympic Games.

“A three-year runway allows athletes, coaches and institutions to plan properly for Olympic and World U20 cycles. We are about to witness a complete transformation of athletics in Nigeria, and I look forward to seeing the impact that MTN CHAMPS will have on Nigeria’s Olympic team in 2028.

“This is a rallying call for brands across the country to join MTN and partners such as Beacon Power Services in our mission to make champions for Nigeria at the LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games and beyond.”

Since its launch in 2023, MTN CHAMPS has recorded over 22,000 athlete entries from more than 1,300 schools across eight cities. Organisers say Season 4 marks the beginning of a more deliberate Olympic pathway as Nigeria aims to return to the podium at the 2028 Games.

African Youth Research Challenge 2026 Opens for Climate Researchers

The African Youth Climate Hub has announced that application is open for the African Youth Research Challenge, a continental initiative designed to unite young researchers across Africa to tackle climate change through knowledge and policy.

The programme is organised by the UNESCO Youth Climate Action Network (YoU-CAN) and the African Youth Climate Hub (AYCH). It is a research paper competition for young African researchers, students or young professionals aged 18–35 on climate change impact and solutions for the African continent, where 10 papers will be selected, and reformulated by their young authors into policy briefs to inform policy makers.

The African Youth Research Challenge is focused on “Uniting Young Researchers across Africa to Tackle Climate Change through Knowledge and Policy.” The initiative comes at a time when the climate crisis continues to affect communities across the continent. Climate change affects everyone, but Africa feels the heat more severely.

The challenge is a joint initiative launched by the Mohammed VI Foundation’s African Youth Climate Hub and UNESCO’s Youth Climate Action Network to enhance the capacities of young Africans to promote climate action. It is a platform for African young researchers on climate action.

Youth between 18 to 35 years across Africa who are passionate about climate solutions are eligible to join. Selected participants will take part in several activities aimed at building their skills and expanding their impact.

Participants will join a high-level capacity-development programme in Morocco alongside African climate experts and be one of 10 selected young researchers contributing to climate action through science-based insights.

They will also engage in an intergenerational policy dialogue, amplifying youth voices in decision-making spaces, co-develop a policy brief with concrete recommendations to support climate strategies across Africa, and collaborate and exchange knowledge with leading African researchers and experts.

The initiative focuses on research production, capacity building, research-policy synergies, intergenerational dialogue, and a mentor network. It will connect professors, mentors, and leading regional experts to provide scientific guidance and African perspectives for local climate initiatives.

Interested applicants are advised to submit their application by visiting https://youthclimatehub.org/research-challenge/.

Lagos Govt to Drive 100,000 Lives Strategic Framework on Jobs

0

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, has intensified efforts to tackle unemployment as it convened a strategic industry engagement to accelerate the delivery of its 100,000 Lives Strategic Framework.

The meeting was held on Friday in the Ministry’s Conference Room with Workforce Consulting and Courier Logistics Limited. Discussions focused on building structured collaboration that will translate into expanded job opportunities, strengthened employability pathways, and sustainable income generation for Lagos residents.

Speaking during the engagement, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Lolade Aina, said the Ministry is deliberately shifting from policy conversations to measurable employment outcomes.

“The goal is clear — impact. We are not just counting numbers; we are ensuring that lives are meaningfully transformed through access to decent work and enterprise opportunities. Strategic industry collaboration is critical to achieving this,” she stated.

Aina explained that the Ministry remains committed to aligning government initiatives with private sector capacity to close skills gaps, improve workforce readiness, and create scalable employment solutions across the state.

She noted that the engagement reflects the Ministry’s determination to move with urgency and precision in delivering on its mandate, reinforcing Lagos State’s position as a hub for opportunity, innovation, and economic empowerment.

NWGF launches Social Development Unit, IDP Policy for Katsina and Zamfara

Katsina State Governor and Chairman of the Northwest Governors’ Forum (NWGF), Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has announced the establishment of a Social Development Unit within the NWGF Secretariat to strengthen coordination and drive lasting solutions to internal displacement across the region.

Governor Radda made the announcement on Monday during the official launch of the IDP Policy and State Action Plan on Durable Solutions (SAP) for Katsina and Zamfara States, held at Fraser Suites, Abuja.

In his address, Governor Radda explained that the new unit will coordinate policy alignment, oversee implementation, facilitate partnerships, and strengthen monitoring and peer learning among member states. He said the initiative reflects a collective resolve to tackle displacement through structured and sustainable measures.

He called on state governments, development partners, and other stakeholders to adopt coordinated and sustainable strategies to address internal displacement across the Northwest.

“This launch is more than the unveiling of policy documents. It represents a shared commitment by state governments, the Federal Government, and development partners to address displacement as a structural development challenge that requires long-term, coordinated solutions,” Governor Radda said.

He noted that insecurity, banditry, and communal conflicts have displaced thousands of families in the Northwest, disrupting livelihoods and placing pressure on social systems. According to him, the situation in Katsina and Zamfara is especially severe, making deliberate policy direction and strategic interventions necessary.

Governor Radda highlighted that both states have adopted a policy-driven approach aligned with the National Policy on Internally Displaced Persons, shifting attention from emergency relief to durable solutions that restore dignity, self-reliance, and social cohesion.

“The IDP policies and action plans provide a clear framework for coordinated action. They define institutional roles, establish coordination mechanisms, and outline priority interventions across protection, livelihoods, infrastructure, and social services,” he explained.

He emphasized that displaced persons and host communities remain central to recovery and reintegration plans, ensuring that their voices, needs, and rights guide all development initiatives.

“I commend the governments of Katsina and Zamfara for their leadership in bringing this framework to life. Their efforts demonstrate that displacement cannot be effectively addressed by any single state acting alone,” Governor Radda added.

Governor Radda also revealed that the initiative will extend beyond Katsina and Zamfara.

“The Northwest Governors Forum is committed to scaling this framework across all states of the region, ensuring a harmonized, region-wide approach to internal displacement and durable solutions,” he said.

He stressed that regional coordination is critical for policy coherence, operational efficiency, and greater impact across shared borders and communities.

Earlier, the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, said years of insecurity had destroyed communities, emptied villages, forced farmers off their land, and kept children out of school. He disclosed that as of 2024, over 216,000 people, mostly women and children, had been displaced across all 14 local government areas of the state.

Governor Lawal explained that his administration is addressing the root causes of insecurity through key initiatives, including the establishment of the State Security Trust Fund, the deployment of volunteer protection guards, and the strengthening of governance systems to ensure accountability and effective service delivery.

He also highlighted efforts to address gender-based violence (GBV) and expand social and livelihood programmes aimed at restoring stability, supporting displaced persons, and empowering communities to rebuild their lives with dignity.

He further stated that the new IDP Policy and State Action Plan provide a structured framework for prevention, protection, coordination, voluntary return, reintegration, and long-term recovery, aligned with national laws and international standards.

“Durable solutions must include security, access to farmland and livelihoods, functioning schools and healthcare, restored infrastructure, and social cohesion,” Governor Lawal said.

Also speaking, the UN Assistant Secretary-General and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Mr. Mohamed Malick Fall, noted that over 3.7 million Nigerians are currently displaced.

He stressed that displacement is not only about physical movement but about ensuring that every citizen can live in peace and contribute to national development.

“The Northwest is now stepping forward, following earlier efforts in Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, and Benue, showing that durable solutions are possible when security, development, and social services advance together,” Fall said.

Fall reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Nigeria under national leadership. He revealed that in 2025 alone, nearly 150,000 displaced persons accessed livelihoods, almost 200,000 benefited from education and skills training, and more than 38,000 received vital documentation.

In the same vein, UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Elsie Attafua described internal displacement as a major national concern affecting both stability and development. She noted a clear shift from short-term humanitarian assistance to state-led recovery, reintegration, and long-term development strategies.

She explained that displacement is not just about people moving from one place to another but about helping communities rebuild livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to growth and progress.

“The Northwest is progressing, building on lessons from the BAY states and Benue, demonstrating that durable solutions succeed when states lead, institutions are strong, and partnerships are sustained,” she added.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Maryam Yahaya, Director-General of the Northwest Governors’ Forum, observed that displacement in the region goes beyond the need for shelter, causing trauma, loss of dignity, and interrupted lives.

She warned that insecurity affects everyone and stressed the need for inclusive communities, strong governance, and deliberate development efforts to address the crisis.

The event was attended by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Bernard Doro; Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmed; Minister of Niger Delta Development, Hon Abubakar Momoh; and Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, Minister of State for Regional Development. Also present were the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Katsina State, Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir, as well as members of the Katsina and Zamfara State Executive Councils.

FG Probes Temu over Data Privacy Law Violations in Nigeria

The federal government, through the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has ordered an immediate inquiry into the operations of Temu, a global e-commerce platform, over potential violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Head of Legal, Enforcement & Regulations, Babatunde Bamigboye, the NDPC said the investigation was triggered by concerns regarding online surveillance through personal data processing, accountability, data minimisation, transparency, duty of care, and cross-border data transfers.

Preliminary findings indicate that Temu handles the personal data of about 12.7 million Nigerians, while the platform records 70 million daily active users worldwide.

The commission’s National Commissioner and CEO, Dr Vincent Olatunji, warned that “Processors who engage in processing activities on behalf of data controllers without verifying their compliance with the NDP Act may be liable under the NDP Act.”

The move highlights increasing scrutiny of digital platforms in Nigeria as authorities work to ensure that personal information is managed in line with the law.

Temu first went live in the United States in September 2022 and expanded to more than 90 markets worldwide by 2025. The company grew rapidly through heavy spending on advertising and promotions aimed at attracting users.

The platform entered the Nigerian market in late 2024. Its arrival was marked by aggressive marketing across social media and mobile app stores, where it became one of the most downloaded apps in the country for a period.

Nigeria’s large youthful population, rising smartphone use, and expanding e-commerce sector made it attractive for Temu’s growth strategy.

PIND Opens Applications for SPPG 2026 Grants (up to N10m)

0

The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) has opened applications for the Service Provider Performance Grant (SPPG) 2026, inviting private agricultural Service Providers to expand access to quality seeds, inputs, technologies, and structured markets for smallholder farmers across the Niger Delta.

The performance-based grants, ranging from N3 million to N10 million, are designed to help qualified Service Providers scale innovative and climate-smart services, strengthen farmer productivity, and create jobs in the region.

PIND is a non-profit committed to promoting peace and equitable economic growth in the Niger Delta through strategic partnerships and collaborations with bilateral and multilateral aid agencies, federal and state government agencies in Nigeria, private companies, and civil society groups.

PIND’s overarching goal is to increase income and employment in the region through two primary programmes: Economic Development and Peace Building. The Economic Development programme facilitates inclusive, sustainable, and diversified economic growth enabled by improved analysis, advocacy, and capacity building of market actors, while the Peace Building programme strengthens conflict management systems and capacities for enabling peace and economic growth, utilizing analysis and advocacy to address constraints to peace.

Both programmes are supported by four enablers: capacity building, advocacy, communications, gender equity, and social inclusion.

The purpose of the SPPG initiative is to further strengthen the capacity of private agricultural Service Providers to sustainably expand and deepen the delivery of Agricultural services, inclusive of climate-smart agricultural advisory and linkage services, leading to increased income and job creation for smallholder farmers and agribusinesses in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region.

Specifically, the grant seeks to increase farmers’ access to climate-smart good agricultural practices, improve linkages to and adoption of quality agricultural inputs including improved and certified seeds, facilitate access to productivity-enhancing and climate-resilient technologies, strengthen linkages between farmers and higher-value markets, and promote commercially viable, scalable, and sustainable service delivery models led by private sector actors.

The grant is open to private agricultural Service Providers with the capacity and experience to deliver climate-smart agricultural training, advisory, input, technology, and market services to smallholder farmers and agribusinesses in the Niger Delta.

Eligible applicants must ensure that proposed intervention activities are based in the Niger Delta and have the potential to generate employment and improve livelihoods for households in the region. Applicants must have participated in PIND-organised capacity building programmes targeted at Service Providers and demonstrated understanding of PIND’s market system development approach.

They must also show experience in delivering agricultural advisory, extension, or technical services to smallholder farmers, provide verifiable legal registration through a Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) certificate, and operate within priority agricultural value chains such as aquaculture, cassava, cocoa, palm oil, poultry, vegetable, rice, maize, bee keeping, and small ruminants.

Applicants are required to demonstrate a viable business model, willingness to co-invest financially or in-kind, capacity to reach smallholder farmers including women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), and readiness to collaborate with input suppliers, aggregators, processors, and other market actors. They must also comply with PIND’s grant management requirements, including monitoring, reporting, and use of PIND database tools.

Interested Service Providers are to submit a technical proposal and detailed budget outlining the proposed intervention, target farmers, geographic coverage, service delivery approach, expected results, inclusion strategies, partnerships, marketing and linkage plans, sustainability strategy, and co-investment plan.

Applications must include a detailed budget indicating grant funding requested, cost assumptions, value-for-money considerations, and the applicant’s co-investment contribution.

The submission deadline is February 24, 2026. All applications, including the technical and detailed budget proposals and mandatory supporting documents, must be sent via email to etender@pindfoundation.org on or before the deadline.
