The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, has called on global partners and the private sector to support Nigeria’s efforts to bridge its growing skills gap and create jobs for millions of young people.

Speaking on Monday at the Skills-to-Jobs: Strengthening Workforce Systems for Economic Growth forum held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Onyejeocha said Nigeria’s most valuable resource is its population. She emphasized that equipping citizens with relevant skills is essential to reducing unemployment and promoting inclusive economic growth.

“Our nation’s greatest resource is its people. By equipping Nigerians, especially our youth, with the right skills and creating pathways to meaningful jobs, we are not only reducing unemployment but also laying the foundation for inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” she said.

The forum was organized by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in collaboration with Tech4Dev, Semicolon, and Avaara Partners. It brought together government officials, development partners, and private sector leaders to discuss workforce innovation and job creation strategies.

Onyejeocha explained that closing the skills-to-jobs divide would not only prepare Nigerians for the future of work but also position the country as a leader in digital and industrial transformation across Africa.

She urged stakeholders to increase investment in skills development and ensure education systems are aligned with the demands of the labour market.

Her call was supported by contributions from representatives of the Nigerian government, the World Bank, Mastercard Foundation, and other private sector players.

They agreed that strong public-private partnerships are vital to building a resilient workforce that can drive long-term economic development and create sustainable jobs for Nigeria’s growing youth population.

Niger State flags off FG’s ASAP grant distribution for 18700 farmers

Niger State Governor, farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has flagged off the distribution of the Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme (ASAP) grant under the Federal Government/International Fund for Agricultural Development/Value Chain Development Programme (FGN/IFAD/VCDP), supported by the United Nations. The event took place in Minna and also featured the graduation of youths trained in the fabrication of agricultural equipment.

Represented by his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, the governor described the intervention as timely, stressing that it aligns with his administration’s agenda to revolutionize agriculture in the state.

According to him, Niger State is one of two states selected for the ASAP grant, which serves as additional financing to strengthen earlier achievements recorded by the FGN/IFAD/VCDP in rice and cassava production, processing, and marketing across nine local government areas.

“The intervention will increase the capacity of smallholder farmers to cope with the overwhelming effects of climate change and support the expansion of arable land through climate-resilient activities,” the governor stated. He added that the programme will also improve agricultural production and boost food security in the state.

The governor expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and IFAD/VCDP for recognizing Niger State’s efforts in the agricultural sector. He assured that the state government will continue to promptly meet its counterpart funding obligations and appealed for the inclusion of more local government areas in future phases of the project.

He congratulated the beneficiaries of the ASAP grant and the youths who completed training on agricultural equipment fabrication. “I urge you to use the grant and starter packs wisely to create jobs, increase your livelihood, and provide essential services to farmers within your clusters,” he said.

The National Programme Coordinator of VCDP, Dr. Fatima Aliyu, highlighted the impact of VCDP in promoting youth entrepreneurship, empowering women, and advancing climate-smart agriculture. She explained that the ASAP grant is designed to help smallholder farmers adapt to the negative effects of climate change.

“The target is to reach 24,000 beneficiaries nationwide, with Niger State having 18,700 farmers, including women,” Dr. Aliyu revealed. She outlined the focus areas of the intervention, which include climate-resilient planting materials, soil conservation, erosion control, waste-to-wealth initiatives, improved water resource access, and renewable energy solutions.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, represented by Mohammad Bashir Abdulkadir, praised the initiative, stating, “The distribution of the ASAP grant and the graduation of youth fabricators are clear indications that Nigeria’s agricultural sector has a future that is inclusive, climate-smart, youth-driven, and profitable.”

Representatives of the Nigeria Agricultural Mechanization and Development Authority (NAMDA), Minna-Green House, the Chairman of Edati Local Government, and the Executive Director of the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) delivered goodwill messages. They commended the programme, emphasizing its potential to transform agriculture in the state and country at large.

Equipment distributed under the ASAP grant included cassava peel conversion machines, rice husk briquette machines, solar-powered irrigation water pumps, power tillers for bunds, and digital devices such as laptops and phones for accessing climate information. These items were given to beneficiaries across six local government areas.

Additionally, starter packs were provided to 45 trained youths drawn from nine local government areas to support their work and encourage innovation in agricultural equipment fabrication.

FG launches pension revolution 2.0 initiative

0

The National Pension Commission has announced the launch of Pension Revolution 2.0, themed “Stronger Pensions, Stronger Nigeria.” This new programme aims to transform Nigeria’s pension industry by building on two decades of reforms and progress. According to the Commission, this initiative will guide the sector into its next phase of growth, sustainability, and resilience.

The first major milestone in Nigeria’s pension system came in 2004 with the enactment of the Pension Reform Act, which introduced the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). This reform changed how retirement savings were managed, laying the foundation for trust and stability in the system.

Speaking on the new programme, the Commission described Pension Revolution 2.0 as “the most significant advancement since 2004, bold in ambition, yet evolutionary in practice.” It is designed to promote dignity for retirees, broaden access to pension services, and strengthen Nigeria’s economy through long-term savings and investments.

The Commission stated that the initiative is guided by the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “Our pension system must enable dignity in retirement, broaden access for all Nigerians, and mobilise long-term savings as reliable capital for national development,” the Commission noted.

Starting this week, new regulations will be released daily to improve critical areas such as investment and risk management, governance, compliance, service delivery, and financial inclusion. In line with the President’s directive, the Commission announced plans to pilot health insurance coverage for retirees and implement the Minimum Pension Guarantee within the next three months. These measures are aimed at protecting retirees’ dignity and ensuring they maintain a decent standard of living after retirement.

The reforms focus on five key areas: providing health insurance and a minimum pension floor for retirees, optimising investments while safeguarding contributors’ funds, expanding pensions to include workers in the informal sector, using technology to improve access and services, and unlocking pension assets as a dependable source of financing for national development.

With these changes, the Commission believes the pension industry will play a stronger role in driving economic growth while securing the future of millions of Nigerian workers.

Jigawa Governor launches palm programme to empower 2,000 youths

Governor Malam Umar Namadi has officially launched the Jigawa State Date Palm Development Programme, a major agricultural project designed to boost food production, restore the environment, and create jobs for thousands of young people across the state. The event took place at the Fanisau NYSC Orientation Camp in Dutse, where the governor highlighted the initiative as a long-term investment in the economic future of Jigawa State.

Speaking at the launch, Governor Namadi expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for the success of the project and emphasized its importance to the people and communities of Jigawa. He described the programme as a unique and multi-sector initiative that will have lasting benefits for agriculture, environmental sustainability, and the livelihoods of citizens.

“With deep gratitude to Allah, the Supreme and Owner of all Sovereignty, I am highly delighted as we are gathered here today to witness the launch of yet another remarkable milestone in pursuit of several initiatives aimed at bringing prosperity to the people of Jigawa State,” Governor Namadi said. “The program we are launching today is unique—being a multi-pronged initiative with multiple outcomes across several sectors of the State’s economy with a long-lasting impact on the socioeconomic wellbeing of our people and prosperity of our State.”

The Date Palm Development Programme involves the propagation and planting of over 200,000 date palm seedlings. These will be distributed across 1,042 hectares of land in selected Local Government Areas, with more than 2,000 young people engaged directly as custodians of the plantations. According to the governor, this approach will not only generate employment but also contribute to environmental protection and food security.

“As conceived, the Date Palm Development Programme will involve the propagation and planting of over two hundred thousand date palm tree seedlings across two thousand and eighty-four date palm clusters covering one thousand and forty-two hectares in some selected Local Government Areas across the State,” he explained.

During the event, the governor also oversaw the graduation of 400 young men and women from Birniwa, Babura, Sule-Tankarkar, and Yankwashi Local Government Areas. These participants completed comprehensive training in date palm plantation establishment, cultivation techniques, management practices, and value addition processes.

“Each of the four hundred trained youths will be entrusted with half a hectare for proper management. Already, all the sites were equipped with five industrial boreholes for watering and irrigation purposes and will also be fenced to prevent encroachment and safeguard the survival of the seedlings.

Each of the 400 youth will be entitled to a monthly allowance to manage the sites for an initial two years under expert supervision,” Governor Namadi stated.

He commended the committee responsible for designing and implementing the project, urging them to sustain the effort and ensure its long-term success. He also announced that the second phase of the programme is scheduled to commence by June 2026, expanding its reach and impact across more areas in the state.

The governor expressed optimism that this project would work hand in hand with the Federal Government’s Great Green Wall Project, an initiative aimed at combating desertification and climate change. He said this collaboration would further strengthen environmental resilience while boosting food security and economic growth not only in Jigawa but across Nigeria.

Experts at the event highlighted the significant economic and health benefits associated with date palm cultivation. Dr. Abdulhamid Hamza Muhammad, Head of the Nigerian Institute of Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) substation in Dutse, explained that dates are rich in essential nutrients, support brain health, and help in preventing certain diseases.

He noted that a single date palm tree can produce between 60 and 70 kilograms of dates annually. He added that a young farmer managing one hectare of land could potentially earn over ₦7 million annually through date palm farming.

“This initiative is not only about improving the environment but also about creating wealth for our young people,” Dr. Muhammad said. “Date palm farming has enormous potential to transform communities and provide sustainable livelihoods.”

Malam Rabi’u Ayuba Kazaure, a consultant with APESAN, also provided an economic forecast for the programme. He projected that the state could generate billions of naira annually from date palm production if managed effectively.

“Out of the 1,042 hectares allocated in Jigawa State, we took the minimum estimate and said at least five kilograms per tree base, since it produces twice a year. That makes it 30 kilograms each time and 70 kilograms annually per tree. With 150 trees, when you multiply by this number, it gives ₦47 billion worth of dates every year. This is the minimum that can be achieved from these 400 trees on the 1,042 hectares,” Kazaure explained.
