FG unveils livestock growth plan to double herd size by 2035

The Federal Government has launched the National Livestock Growth and Advancement Strategy, a 10-year plan designed to reposition Nigeria’s livestock sector as a key driver of food security and economic growth.

The strategy, which will be implemented in two phases, was unveiled by the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, during the Economic Management Team meeting.

He explained that the initiative aims to double the national herd size and expand sectoral output by at least 100 per cent by 2035. Maiha stressed that the plan will be anchored on strong collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure long-term results.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, described the livestock strategy as consistent with the government’s broader economic reform programme.

He noted that it demonstrates a deliberate move to attract investment and reduce reliance on food imports. “Initiatives such as NL-GAS align with our reform agenda and demonstrate government’s commitment to unlocking investment and enhancing food security,” Edun said.

“The objective is to lay a foundation for sustainable, private-sector-led growth that will deliver long-term benefits to Nigerians.”

The unveiling coincided with the Economic Management Team’s review of Nigeria’s economic performance and sectoral priorities. Officials pointed out that the economy continues to show stability, supported by a competitive exchange rate and disciplined reforms.

They highlighted that inflation has eased for the fifth consecutive month, now standing at 20 per cent, while Gross Domestic Product growth remains above 3 per cent.

Nigeria also recorded a merchandise trade surplus of ₦7.4 trillion in the second quarter of 2025, reflecting stronger export performance compared to imports, which government officials said further strengthens the outlook for economic growth.

0

September 20, 2025 – The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has issued a public notice today, 20th September 2025, announcing an update for medical and dental practitioners seeking housemanship opportunities. According to the council, vacancies for housemanship placements in federal institutions will be made available on the MDCN portal on Tuesday, 23rd September 2025.

In a statement, the management said, “We are pleased to inform you that vacancies for housemanship placements in federal institutions will be updated on the MDCN portal on Tuesday 23rd September, 2025. All interested applicants intending to serve in federal hospitals are encouraged to check the portal for available slots.”

The council emphasized that registration on the MDCN Housemanship Portal is compulsory. “Please be advised that upon the receipt of your provisional registration certificate during the induction ceremony, you must create your profile on the Housemanship portal (www.housemanship.mdcn.gov.ng). This will grant you access to apply for housemanship positions at any of the 46 federal training institutions nationwide, under the management of the MDCN,” the notice explained.

The management further cautioned applicants against contacting federal institutions directly. “It is important to refrain from directly contacting or sending application letters to federal institutions and to MDCN, either personally or through proxies (even parents), as this is considered a contravention under the Centralized Housemanship Placement System. Such actions may result in denial of access to the portal, as they contravene existing policies,” it warned.

MDCN clarified that the update applies strictly to the 46 federal hospitals approved for housemanship placement. Each hospital has an approved number of slots based on training parameters. If a hospital of choice is not listed, it indicates no vacancy exists there.

The council also noted that there are 70 non-federal hospitals with housemanship placements available, and applicants are advised to approach such institutions directly for opportunities.

Applicants can find the list of approved hospitals for housemanship under the centralized scheme on the MDCN website at mdcn.gov.ng/page/housemanship/list-of-approved-housemanship-centers-currently-covered-by-the-centralized-posting012.

Details on how the centralized housemanship scheme works are available at mdcn.gov.ng/page/housemanship/how-it-works, while a full list of accredited federal, state, private, and military hospitals for housemanship training can be accessed at mdcn.gov.ng/page/education/approved-housemanship-training-institutions-as-at-august-2024.

The management concluded by reminding applicants that the opportunity remains exclusive to medical and dental practitioners.
