Kano State Gov orders recruitment of 2,616 SUBEB teachers

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced the immediate recruitment of 2,616 qualified teachers to tackle the wide teacher-to-pupil ratio in public primary schools across the state.

The governor also confirmed the absorption of 4,315 former Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) volunteer teachers into the state civil service as permanent and pensionable workers. The BESDA programme, supported by the World Bank in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, was created to increase access for out-of-school children, improve literacy levels in target states, and strengthen accountability in basic education. The initiative was discontinued during the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Speaking at the official presentation of appointment letters to the former BESDA teachers, Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s commitment to the state of emergency declared on education. He described education as the foundation for human development and said the government would continue to invest heavily in the sector to ensure that every child has access to quality learning.

“Today’s event is an unmistakable indication of our solid commitment to addressing challenges in the education sector. Since the inception of this government, we have worked tirelessly to ensure every school in Kano State is functional, conducive, and capable of providing quality education,” Yusuf said.

The governor further directed the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to begin the recruitment process for the 2,616 new teachers without delay. According to him, the new teachers will help achieve and maintain the required teacher-to-pupil ratio across the state.

“I have also mandated the Ministry of Education and all its agencies to intensify monitoring and evaluation of our schools to guarantee quality service delivery, adequate maintenance of facilities, and proper utilisation of resources,” he added.

Governor Yusuf called on the newly employed teachers to see their work as a responsibility that goes beyond teaching, emphasizing the importance of building character, instilling values, and promoting ethical standards among pupils.

Kano State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Haruna Ali Makoda, commended the administration’s efforts, noting that the state’s impressive performance in the 2025 NECO SSCE results was proof of the positive impact of the government’s investment in education.

Also speaking, SUBEB Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Kabir, urged the new teachers to justify the government’s trust by working together as a team and delivering quality education to the children of Kano State.

Teach For Nigeria inducts 502 fellows, 93 school leaders for 2025

Teach For Nigeria has officially inducted its ninth cohort of Fellows and fifth cohort of school leaders into its flagship fellowship programme, welcoming 502 Fellows and 93 school leaders into the 2025 intake.

The induction ceremony, themed “One Classroom, Infinite Possibilities: The Future Is Now!”, was held in Lagos and marked the start of a two-year journey for participants who recently completed intensive training in teaching and leadership skills.

The non-profit organisation said in a statement on Tuesday that the programme is designed to equip participants with the tools to transform classrooms, empower students, and reimagine education in underserved schools across Lagos and Ogun states. Since its launch in 2017, Teach For Nigeria has placed 2,463 Fellows in public primary and secondary schools in Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, and Oyo states.

According to the organisation, more than 40,000 people expressed interest in joining the fellowship this year, but fewer than 600 were selected after a highly competitive recruitment process. The initiative focuses on education reform, teacher training, and community development in areas with limited resources.

Chief Executive Officer of Teach For Nigeria, Molade Adeniyi, urged the new Fellows and school leaders to see themselves as key contributors to the nation’s growth. “Every classroom holds the potential to shape doctors, engineers, artists, and leaders. Every child can learn and thrive, and the future cannot wait,” Adeniyi said. “You are no longer just individuals; you are part of a movement determined to reimagine education in Nigeria.”

The keynote speech was delivered by Chief Executive Officer of Kizazi, Rhoda Odigboh, who praised the role of Teach For Nigeria in strengthening the education sector. She encouraged the inductees to embrace the fellowship as an opportunity to create lasting change in underserved communities.

Ogun State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, represented by Bolaji Adedipe, delivered a goodwill message commending Teach For Nigeria for its impact and pledged the government’s continued support for its programmes.

Over the next two years, the Fellows will serve as full-time teachers in underserved communities, providing not just classroom lessons but also addressing systemic barriers that prevent children from achieving their full potential.

Teach For Nigeria also called on government agencies, the private sector, civil society organisations, and citizens to join in expanding educational access for marginalised children.

“As these Fellows enter classrooms across Lagos and Ogun states, they carry with them not just knowledge, but the determination to shape Nigeria’s future one child at a time,” Adeniyi added.

The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has given financial support to 500 women in Enugu State to boost their small businesses. Each beneficiary received N50,000 through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) in partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation.

The programme is called the RHI/Tony Elumelu Foundation Women Economic Empowerment Programme with the theme, “Provision of Small Business Recapitalisation Grant to 500 Women Across 36 States and FCT.”

The beneficiaries were carefully selected from the 17 local government areas of Enugu State through the Office of the State’s First Lady, Nkechinyere Mbah. The event, which was held in Enugu on Thursday, focused on supporting women who are traders and small-scale business owners.

In a message delivered at the event, Mrs Tinubu explained that the programme was created to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerian women. She stated that these women work hard daily to provide for their families, educate their children, and make positive contributions to their communities.

The First Lady was represented at the event by Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, wife of the Enugu State Governor. She said, “I am delighted to be here to flag off the Women Economic Empowerment Programme of the Renewed Hope Initiative in conjunction with the Tony Elumelu Foundation in Enugu State. Let me emphasise that this is not a loan. It is a grant and a seed of renewed hope to help you recapitalise your existing businesses.”

She stressed the importance of empowering women, adding, “It is my firm belief that when you empower a woman, you empower a household, a community, and indeed, a nation.”

Mrs Tinubu praised the Tony Elumelu Foundation for donating N1 billion to RHI to directly support 18,500 women across Nigeria. She explained that women from each of the 36 states and the FCT would receive N50,000 each to strengthen and recapitalise their businesses.

“Therefore, I will be presenting the sum of N50,000 each to some of the pre-selected 500 beneficiaries at this event. I thank the Tony Elumelu Foundation once again for this support. May this act of generosity inspire many more across our nation. I also thank Gov. Peter Mbah and his amiable wife, Nkechinyere, for all their support in executing all the programmes of RHI,” she said.

One of the beneficiaries, Theresa Agor from Uzouwani Council Area, expressed her gratitude, saying, “My heart is filled with joy with this support, and may God bless the President’s wife and the Elumelu Foundation for this kind gesture.”

Food items worth millions of naira have been distributed to vulnerable groups in Sokoto State under the Renewed Hope Initiative Food Outreach Scheme. The programme, spearheaded by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is aimed at reducing hunger and hardship among low-income families and persons with disabilities.

During a symbolic presentation in Sokoto on Thursday, Mrs Tinubu, who was represented by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, said the outreach is part of ongoing efforts to reach vulnerable communities across the country. She praised donors for sustaining the monthly programme, which delivers two truckloads of food supplies to different states.

“This initiative has eased hardship for thousands of families nationwide. So far, we have reached 17 states, and the progress has been tremendous,” she said. “Bayelsa will be the next beneficiary of this initiative in the coming weeks.”

She listed the states that have already benefitted, including Abia, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Kano, Kaduna, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Oyo, and Plateau. According to her, the Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative is a major partner in the programme, while another donor has chosen to remain anonymous but continues to contribute consistently every month.

She explained that the Women’s Economic Empowerment Programme has so far provided N50,000 each to 500 women in every state, in partnership with the Elumelu Foundation.

She further revealed that a new project, Flow With Confidence, will be launched on October 2. The initiative will distribute sanitary pads to 370,000 schoolgirls across the country to help them stay in school during menstruation.

The Wife of the Sokoto State Governor, Dr Fatima Aliyu, described the programme as a timely and much-needed intervention. She announced that Sokoto State complemented the food outreach with its own contributions, which included 1,500 bags of millet, 1,500 bags of maize, 1,200 bags of rice, and cash support of N10,000 each to 3,000 beneficiaries.

Dr Aliyu also highlighted additional support programmes, such as recapitalisation for 1,500 women traders, assistance to 500 elderly citizens, and empowerment packages of N500,000 each for 20 female farmers. She mentioned other interventions in education, including the distribution of 50,000 exercise books, scholarships, and ICT training opportunities for girls and women in the state.

“These interventions have brought meaningful relief to many households in Sokoto. We remain deeply grateful to our dear mother, the First Lady of Nigeria,” she said.

Mr Ubon Udoh, Managing Director of the Abdul Samad Rabiu Initiative for Africa, praised the outreach for its direct and impactful support. He commended Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu, Chairman of BUA Group, for consistently committing 100 million dollars annually since 2021 to health, education, and development projects across the country.
