FG to inject N150bn into social protection for poor and vulnerable

0

Lagos State has said that the National Social Register (NSR) is helping states plan more effectively, with projections to inject over 150 billion naira in support for the poor and vulnerable by 2026.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known at a program organized by the National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) in Lagos, which brought together key stakeholders from government, development partners, and the private sector under the theme, Advancing Social Protection Through the National Social Register.

The Governor’s representative, Samuel Egube, noted that Lagos State intends to raise its budgetary allocation to social protection by 30 percent in 2026, increasing funding to about N170 billion. He said the government was committed to ensuring that those on the margins of poverty feel the impact of social welfare programs.

Thousands have been displaced by floods across several states, heightening the need for reliable data to respond to crises. Experts at the event said that for any nation to respond effectively to disasters, a credible database of citizens was essential.

Olufunmi Olotu of NASSCO said the National Social Register has now grown to cover more than 19 million households and over 70 million individuals. “But beyond the numbers, the real story is that mothers in rural communities, young people searching for opportunity, and the household on the margin of poverty are beginning to see a government that knows them, recognizes their struggle, and is deliberate about supporting them,” she said.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State stressed the importance of continuous support for the vulnerable. “Continuous assistance to the vulnerable is actually a responsibility not only on the part of government, but also on the part of those who can afford it. And that is the reason why every time there is an opportunity with the World Bank to come across and do something, we are always on top of it,” he stated.

Chairman of the United Bank for Africa, Tony Elumelu, explained how the register is used to drive private sector support. “Through the register, we identify people to support with the entrepreneurship program that we do every year,” he said.

Representatives from the Ministry of Finance emphasized that social protection must go beyond data collection. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim said, “Forms are never about numbers alone. They must touch lives. They must mean that a mother can feed her children, that a small business can thrive, and that the poor and vulnerable can face life with dignity.”

Traditional leaders also called for inclusivity. The Alara of Ilara Epe Kingdom, Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, urged that the register must remain dynamic, transparent, and accessible so that no vulnerable group is left behind. Stakeholders agreed that discussions should focus on measurable solutions to support Nigeria’s poor and vulnerable.

He assured that Ogun State has the political will to support women-focused projects and expressed readiness to serve as a pilot state for any federal programme aimed at uplifting women.

He commended the Minister for her impactful service, noting that the state government would continue to work with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for the benefit of Nigerian women.

Speaking during the visit, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim said empowering women remains a top priority of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. She explained that several empowerment programmes have been rolled out nationwide to make women self-reliant and capable of contributing to the country’s economic growth.

She added, “The federal government is considering scaling up empowerment for women in all states of the federation to enable them to be self-reliant and contribute to national development.”

The minister explained that her visit was aimed at assessing the programmes available for women in Ogun State and providing an opportunity for commissioners from Anambra, Gombe, and Zamfara states, who accompanied her, to learn from the state’s approach to women empowerment.

She commended the state government for its ongoing transformation and encouraged Governor Abiodun to continue making Ogun State a model for others to follow.

Meanwhile, the wife of the governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, also appreciated the Minister of Women Affairs for the continuous support given to women in Ogun State. Nigeria’s Livestock Sector Will Be the Next Crude Oil – FG

0

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said that recent corporate growth and rising investor confidence are signs that Nigeria’s ongoing reforms are beginning to deliver results, despite the short-term hardships citizens are experiencing.

He made this known at the 66th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) in Abuja, where he urged economists across the continent to lead Africa’s economic transformation. According to him, politics and economics are inseparable in shaping Africa’s future.

“The reforms are working, and the corporate growth we see today is proof. These are clear signals of rising investor confidence. But we must acknowledge that our citizens are going through a tough period,” Shettima said.

The Vice President emphasized that economists play a crucial role beyond the classroom, describing them as guides whose ideas influence policy and directly shape the lives of citizens. He stated that Africa must reposition itself in the changing global order, stressing that the continent’s 1.5 billion people should be seen as an asset, not a liability.

Shettima lamented that while Asia and South America have transformed into global growth models, Africa remains trapped in post-colonial structures, with intra-African trade still accounting for only 16 percent of total trade. He warned that the continent cannot continue missing opportunities for growth and inclusion.

In his remarks, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, highlighted Nigeria’s vast but underutilized land resources and pledged new partnerships to cut the country’s dependence on imported meat and dairy products. “We have farmlands; we are looking at practical ideas to transform this sector. The future of this country is not in our hands but in our land. Through the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President, the livestock sector today will be the next crude oil,” Maiha said.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to involving professionals in shaping economic reforms. Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, also called for more economists in government and legislation to enforce national development plans.

The African Development Bank representative, Dr. Eric Ogunleye, praised Nigeria’s reforms, describing them as a model that could guide Africa toward prosperity.

Earlier, NES President, Professor Adeola Adenikinju, urged the Federal Government to reintegrate the Society into the Nigerian Economic Management Team. The conference, attended by participants from 22 African countries, had the theme: “Rethinking Africa’s Development Pathways to Economic Transformation and Social Inclusion in a Changing Global Economic Landscape.”

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has flagged off the second phase of its Renewed Hope Employment Initiatives (RHEI) in Abia State, targeting 1,188 unemployed youths for skills acquisition training. The programme, which commenced in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, is part of a nationwide employment scheme covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking at the event, the Director General of the NDE, Silas Ali Agara, who was represented by the State Coordinator, Tessy Wachuku, said the initiative is aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and enjoys the backing of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Agara explained that the programme was developed to tackle unemployment and poverty by providing practical training in vocational trades, entrepreneurship, agriculture, ICT, and public works. He added that over 41,000 people will be trained across Nigeria under this second phase.

According to him, “The programme is a chance for participants to transform their future. I encourage all trainees to take full advantage of the opportunity.” He also revealed that lessons from the first phase had led to improvements, including a digitised registration portal with geofenced features to ensure fairness, transparency, and a credible database of beneficiaries.

In a brief remark, the Head of the Vocational Skills Development Department, Chinyere Onyekwere, expressed appreciation to the dignitaries present and urged the trainees to remain focused and committed throughout the training.

The flag-off ceremony attracted state officials, federal representatives, and stakeholders. Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of the Ministry of Works, the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, and the Ministry of Labour and Productivity.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ngozichi Onwuso thanked the federal government and the NDE and pledged their commitment to make the most of the training opportunity.

BOA, Afreximbank sign $1bn deal to fund Nigeria’s smallholder farmers

0

The Bank of Agriculture (BOA) has entered into a $1 billion financing agreement with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to support Nigeria’s smallholder farmers.

The signing took place at the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2025 in Algiers, Algeria, where BOA Managing Director, Mr. Ayo Sotinrin, and Mrs. Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President for Intra-African Trade and Export Development at Afreximbank, formalised the pact.

A statement from Maikenti Akila, Senior Manager and Head of Corporate Communication at BOA, confirmed the development on Tuesday. The statement explained that the deal was concluded under the leadership of Afreximbank President, Prof. Benedict Oramah, who has been instrumental in pushing for stronger agricultural value chains and improved intra-African trade.

According to BOA, the financing will establish a National Smallholder Farmers’ Fund aimed at closing major gaps that limit access to credit for farmers, who represent almost 95 percent of Nigeria’s agricultural sector. The initiative is structured to deliver blended finance solutions that will make agricultural loans more affordable.

The funding will enable farmers to access loans for seeds, fertilisers, agrochemicals, and mechanised services, which are essential for improving productivity and yields. It will also be used to build capacity in storage, aggregation, and logistics, helping to reduce post-harvest losses that have long affected the sector.

Another key focus is the creation of structured market linkages, which will connect farmers directly to buyers, processors, and exporters, ensuring better returns.

Speaking at the signing, Mr. Sotinrin said, “This deal represents a bold step toward building a sustainable future. It provides smallholder farmers with the resources they need to thrive, contributing significantly to national food security and economic growth.”

He further stated that the partnership aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places food security and farmer empowerment at the centre of strategies to boost Nigeria’s economy.

Rivers State saves N5bn from August salaries after staff verification

The Rivers State Administration, led by Administrator Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has reported a monumental saving of Five Billion Naira (N5,000,000,000) from its August salary bill after a comprehensive staff verification exercise.

The disclosure was made by Vice Admiral Ibas on Tuesday at the grand finale of the 2025 Civil Service Week Celebration held at the Dr. Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt. He explained that the verification exercise exposed non-existent staff and impostors on the government payroll, helping to cut wastage and redirect funds.

“This verification exercise has enabled us to distinguish genuine staff from impostors on the payroll,” Administrator Ibas said. “The ₦5 billion saved is not just a figure; it is a testament to our commitment to fiscal responsibility. These funds will now be strategically invested in critical infrastructure and social projects to accelerate the sustainable development of Rivers State.”

He assured that the recovered money would be channeled into critical development projects and programmes to directly benefit the people of Rivers State.

The celebration, themed “Five Years to 2030: Accelerating Public Service Delivery for a Sustainable Future,” was also used to honour the state’s civil servants. Vice Admiral Ibas described them as “the backbone of this administration and our unsung heroes.”

During his address, he highlighted reforms aimed at strengthening the civil service. These include an upward review of salaries and allowances for Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to reduce the wage gap between them and political office holders. A new N85,000 minimum wage has also been introduced at the local government level.

The Administrator announced capacity-building efforts with major training and upskilling programmes already underway. Finance and accounting officers have received the first large-scale training, while more sessions are planned for senior and middle-level staff to improve public service delivery.

On pension matters, he said allocations have been increased from N2 billion to N2.6 billion monthly to guarantee timely payments. He added that all pensioners, both in Nigeria and abroad, have been verified and enrolled in the state’s contributory health scheme.

For health protection, Ibas disclosed that all workers are now mandated to join the state’s contributory health protection programme, where government contributes 17 percent and staff 8 percent. He further revealed plans for a Group Life Insurance programme to ensure prompt payment of entitlements to families of deceased workers.

In media development, he announced the revitalization of state-owned media outlets including RSBC, RSTV, and The Newspaper Corporation. Renovation, new equipment, and modern upgrades are part of the comprehensive plan to boost information delivery and strengthen government communication channels.

“With accurate data and a reinvigorated workforce, Rivers State is set on a path of sustainable growth and excellence in governance,” the Administrator said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

The event also saw the unveiling of the new Rivers State Civil Service Handbook and the inaugural edition of The Bureaucrat magazine by the Acting Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Inyingi Brown. She also introduced a new pledge, vision, and mission statement for the civil service, stressing the importance of technology in building an agile, responsive, and effective public service.

Dr. Brown noted that the reforms are designed to promote efficiency, ethical standards, and improved delivery of government programmes to meet the state’s development goals.

FG to complete NIN National Social Register integration by 2026

0

The Federal Government has announced that the full registration and integration of the National Identification Number into the National Social Register will be completed by March 2026.

This was disclosed by the National Programme Manager of the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office, Dr. Funmi Olotu, at the Stakeholder Engagement Conference on Advancing Social Protection through the NSR held in Lagos.

According to Olotu, the integration exercise, which began in April 2025, has recorded unprecedented progress. She explained that as of 31 August 2025, more than 7.6 million household records had been updated nationwide, with 9.5 million NINs reported. Out of this number, 8.3 million have been successfully validated by the National Identity Management Commission.

“By March 2026, we aim to achieve full verification and NIN integration for every household in the Register, closing the gaps, eliminating duplication, and ensuring that every naira spent delivers impact where it matters most,” Olotu stated.

She further described the development as a remarkable breakthrough, stressing that earlier attempts at integrating NINs into the Social Register had struggled to reach even 5 percent success.

“In just four months, we have now reached a significant milestone that demonstrates how far we have come in strengthening Nigeria’s social protection systems through technology and data,” she added.

Olotu assured participants that the National Social Register is no longer a static database but a “living instrument of hope,” designed to ensure that government support reaches households in need. She emphasized that the process will enhance social protection programs and improve transparency in poverty reduction efforts across the country.

Nasarawa State governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting poverty reduction through the NSR. He said social protection remains a shared responsibility between the government and the private sector.

Drawing from his own experience in private enterprise and public service, Sule highlighted his tenure as Managing Director of African Petroleum Plc and later as Group Managing Director of Petroleum Products Marketing Company.

He noted how interventions from corporate leaders such as Tony Elumelu, and partnerships involving the Dangote Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, proved that collective action can play a vital role in tackling poverty nationwide.

FG to link diaspora skills with home based innovators

0

Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) have agreed to work together in a new move aimed at boosting innovation and technology in Nigeria, with a focus on linking the skills of Nigerians in the diaspora with those at home.

This partnership was discussed during a meeting between Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the NiDCOM, and Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NASENI.

Dabiri-Erewa described the collaboration as a “timely intervention,” stressing that it would connect local innovators with scientists, engineers, technologists, and entrepreneurs abroad. She explained that the plan supports the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by creating a platform for Nigerians everywhere to share ideas and experiences for national progress.

She praised the work NASENI has been doing and assured them of NiDCOM’s support. She also recommended that the NASENI team take part in the 8th Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS), which will take place from November 11 to 13, 2025, in Abuja.

In his remarks, Halilu highlighted several of NASENI’s key projects. He mentioned Revolut, a payment platform that is already serving thousands of Nigerians with low-cost, real-time transfers. He also spoke about the Innovation Hub and Incubation Programme, which funds Nigerian scientists and innovators both in the country and abroad.

Another key project, Delta-2, is a partnership with the Czech Republic that will enter its third phase in September, bringing advanced technology and international collaboration to Nigeria.

Halilu explained that his visit to NiDCOM was to present two projects. The first is a government-backed payment platform designed to be seamless, flexible, multi-currency, and capable of real-time monitoring at affordable rates.

The second focuses on engaging Nigerians in the diaspora in science, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship to develop practical projects that can drive economic growth. He emphasized that NiDCOM’s database of professionals would play a critical role in making these projects successful.

Both NiDCOM and NASENI agreed to set up a joint working committee. The committee will focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) while also creating broader diaspora engagement strategies to support Nigeria’s development.
