The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has approved the disbursement of ₦945,250,000 for the 2024/2025 scholarship programme for indigenes of the state, with ₦800 million already released to beneficiaries across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The announcement was made by the National President of the National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS), Bello Ibrahim, during a press briefing on Tuesday. He described the development as historic both in scale and impact, stressing that the disbursement had restored hope among students.

According to Ibrahim, a total of 21,901 applications were received, while 19,546 verified beneficiaries have so far been paid a total of ₦801,263,200 across 154 tertiary institutions nationwide. He added that the outstanding balance of ₦145,250,000 would soon be cleared.

“For too long, scholarship payment had become a matter of doubt, delay, and disappointment. Many students struggled with tuition, examinations, and basic sustenance due to irregularities in disbursement. But today, under the compassionate leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed, it has become a source of renewed trust, confidence, and reassurance,” he stated.

The NUBASS president also disclosed that Governor Mohammed recently sponsored 100 indigenous students to pursue advanced studies in China, with the first batch already on their journey.

“This visionary investment in international education reflects his determination to ensure that Bauchi youths compete not only nationally but globally in science, technology, and innovation,” he added.

On the issue of campus security, Ibrahim explained that the union had engaged the Bauchi State Police Command following rising insecurity around schools. He confirmed that the Commissioner of Police approved the establishment of a police station at Wuntin Dada to protect Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic and its surroundings. Increased patrols and surveillance have also been assured around campuses.

Highlighting other achievements of the union, Ibrahim noted the renovation of the NUBASS Secretariat after over a decade of abandonment, distribution of free JAMB registration pins, state-wide orientation for indigent students, and the successful hosting of the first-ever EDUTECH Conference in Bauchi. The conference brought together policymakers, scholars, and students to explore the future of digital education.

He further mentioned the union’s consistent advocacy and interventions, ranging from scholarship follow-ups to campus tours and welfare initiatives.

Expressing gratitude, Ibrahim said the scholarship was “an investment in human capital, the most precious asset of any society,” and assured that NUBASS would continue to work with government and stakeholders to secure safer learning environments.

Delta State Reduces Dialysis Cost to N45,000

0

The Delta State Government has announced a reduction in the cost of dialysis treatment in state-owned hospitals from over N70,000 to N45,000. This move is aimed at easing the financial burden on patients battling kidney-related ailments.

Recall that the federal government earlier released a list of federal hospitals with N12,000 subsidised dialysis.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, made this known during a Delta Television live programme, “Politics in Perspective.” He explained that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved the procurement of eight new dialyzers for government hospitals across the state to support the initiative.

According to the Commissioner, Delta State has also invested in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scan machines to reduce the stress of residents travelling long distances within and outside the country for medical diagnosis. He further cautioned medical personnel against engaging in sharp practices, stressing that any erring staff would face severe sanctions.

Onojaeme revealed that the governor has approved the renovation and complete overhaul of more than 150 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the three senatorial districts. He said this effort is to improve access to affordable healthcare services. He added that the state’s free maternal healthcare programme has yielded positive results, reducing maternal mortality from 350 to 120 per 100,000 live births.

To strengthen service delivery, he disclosed that all government hospitals have been granted approval to utilise 100 percent of their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for basic operational needs. Presently, Delta State has three tertiary hospitals, 65 general hospitals, and 441 PHCs, many of which are undergoing comprehensive remodelling.

Speaking on the contributory health scheme, Onojaeme noted that reforms have been implemented, while medical staff who attempted to sabotage the government’s efforts were sanctioned or demoted. He also highlighted that surveillance under the Drug Revolving Fund is ongoing to prevent fake and adulterated drugs from entering government health facilities.

The Commissioner commended Governor Oborevwori’s recognition by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) for being the first governor in the country to pay the Medical Residency Fund. He said this recognition, along with several health projects, shows the administration’s dedication.

He urged residents of Delta to embrace regular medical check-ups for early detection and prevention of serious ailments, emphasising that the administration remains committed to making healthcare accessible and affordable.

The programme, which started on Monday in Uyo, is aimed at addressing unemployment and equipping participants with high-demand skills to enable them to become self-reliant.

The training will cover 30 different skills ranging from vocational, entrepreneurial, agricultural, and ICT knowledge. Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Director General of NDE, Mr. Silas Agara, said the initiative is designed to bridge Nigeria’s skills gap by empowering young people with relevant skills that will prepare them for self-employment and job creation.

Agara, who was represented by the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of NDE, Mrs. Uduak Essien, highlighted the main objectives of the programme, which include supporting small-scale enterprises, boosting agricultural productivity, improving rural infrastructure, and providing temporary jobs to reduce unemployment in the country.

He explained that during the first phase of the Renewed Hope Employment Initiative, which was launched nationwide on December 6, 2024, a total of 32,692 unskilled and unemployed Nigerians were trained in demand-driven skills across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“A total of 5,532 beneficiaries were settled with loans and starter packs while linkages to credit granting institutions for those that could not be accommodated under our soft loans scheme is ongoing,” Agara stated.

He further revealed that 41,307 persons would be trained in the second phase nationwide, with 1,131 participants drawn from Akwa Ibom State. According to him, 14,457 beneficiaries across the country will be resettled with starter packs after completing their training.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Uduak Essien commended the federal government for implementing empowerment programmes that promote economic growth and development. Represented by the Assistant Director of Small-Scale Enterprises, Mrs. Udeme Udoh, she urged participants to take the training seriously for their personal progress and the overall benefit of society.

Also speaking, the coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Helen Obareke-Eno, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between the federal and state governments in implementing programmes that create sustainable opportunities for the youth.
