Lagos State has announced plans to create 1,000 new jobs through its Graduate Internship Placement Programme (GIPP). Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known at the Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment Stakeholders’ Forum 2025, held on Wednesday in Ikeja. The theme was “Passion to Prosperity: Unlocking Youth Potential in Lagos.”

The governor was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin. He urged stakeholders across sectors to unite in addressing unemployment, especially among young people.

“As a government, we have to keep creating an environment that allows passion to blossom into success, which means ensuring access to quality education, relevant skills, mentorship, funding, and a supportive ecosystem,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said strategies must focus on education and skill development to meet the changing job market. He added that entrepreneurship should be encouraged as a driver of innovation and wealth creation.

“We must cultivate an environment where mentorship and collaboration flourish, linking young talents with seasoned professionals who can motivate and guide them,” he added.

Guest speaker Ahmed Gobir, president and chairman of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), said job creation must be treated as an urgent need.

“Job creation is not charity but a matter of economic survival,” he said. He urged business leaders to open their doors to youth talent.

Gobir also advised young people not to wait only for formal employment but to use their skills to start businesses and become job creators.

Earlier, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, described the forum as a strategic gathering with the common goal of unlocking youth potential in Lagos.

The Federal Government, in partnership with the Sokoto State Government, has announced a N7 billion commitment to upgrade the education sector in Sokoto State.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, during a sensitisation campaign on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mid-term achievements held in the state. He explained that the intervention was aimed at improving access to quality education while also supporting indigent students.

According to the Minister, many students of Sokoto origin have already benefited from the NELFUND loan scheme, which allows them to pursue tertiary education without financial barriers.

“Indeed, the past two years of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, from May 2023, have been a period of unprecedented achievements, where the state witnessed a harvest of dividends of democracy like never before in its annals, indelibly touching the lives of the people and turning their fortunes for the better,” Idris said.

The Minister, who was represented by the Head of Centre, Federal Information Centre, Sokoto, further outlined other major interventions in the state. He listed the North West Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) penetration project, the flag-off of the 1,068km Sokoto–Badagry super highway, and the subsidised sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to Sokoto State civil servants at N40,000 per 50kg bag.

He noted that these projects were part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s leadership, describing them as “promises kept” that reflect the administration’s dedication to national development.

Other initiatives highlighted include the distribution of assorted staple grains to vulnerable households and the free supply of fertilizers to farmers across the 23 Local Government Areas of Sokoto State.

Participants at the sensitisation event expressed appreciation to President Tinubu’s administration and pledged continued support, while commending the Ministry of Information and National Orientation for organising the programme.

President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to food security and youth involvement in agribusiness was again emphasised at the graduation of 37 participants of the 2024/2025 Graduate Youth Empowerment Programme.

The event, held at the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority headquarters in Abeokuta on Wednesday, was led by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adedeji Ashiru.

He noted that the Federal Government is determined to encourage young Nigerians to take up agripreneurship to address unemployment and boost food production.

Since the training scheme began in 2016, more than 200 agriculturally skilled graduates have been produced. The latest group received hands-on training in arable crop farming, poultry management, and fisheries.

Ashiru explained that the six-month training, which started in February, was designed to expose participants to the “nitty-gritty” of modern agriculture. He said it was also aimed at preparing them to contribute to food production, wealth creation, and job opportunities.

He congratulated the graduates for their discipline and dedication, announcing ₦500,000 startup capital for each of the 37 participants.

“In accordance with the Graduate Youth Empowerment Programme (GYEP) Operational Guidelines, and as a demonstration of our unwavering commitment to the success of our graduates, the Management of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority has approved the allocation of ₦500,000.00 as startup capital for each of our 37 graduating participants.

“The ₦500,000.00 you are receiving today is not merely a grant — it is an investment in Nigeria’s future, a seed that must be planted wisely to yield an abundant harvest. Your mission extends beyond personal success to national impact. This substantial investment of ₦18,500,000.00 represents more than financial support — it embodies our faith in your potential and our commitment to your success,” he said.

Ashiru encouraged the graduates to remain focused and disciplined. “You are not merely graduates; you are agents of change in Nigeria’s agricultural transformation, job creators for the next generation, and food security champions for our nation,” he said.

He also commended President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, for their support in sustaining the initiative.

Executive Director of Agricultural and Commercial Services, Mr. Sulaiman Akeem, said the training gave participants practical skills in poultry, fisheries, and crop production. He noted that the experience would enable them to create wealth and improve food production across the agricultural value chain.

One of the beneficiaries, Olalekan Daniel, praised the programme, saying the training had “sufficiently empowered them to join in the vanguard of boosting food production in the country.”

The Graduate Youth Empowerment Programme is one of the Federal Government’s major schemes to fight unemployment and strengthen food security through agripreneurship.

Since its launch in 2016, it has provided six months of practical training and mentorship for young Nigerians with an interest in agriculture. Areas covered include arable crop farming, poultry management, and fisheries.

The programme is part of Tinubu’s wider plan to make agriculture attractive to youth while boosting food production, creating jobs, and ensuring economic growth.

Over 200 graduates have already completed the scheme, many of whom have gone on to establish viable agribusiness ventures.

Each graduate also receives startup capital to begin their enterprise, reinforcing the government’s drive to build a new generation of agriculturally skilled entrepreneurs.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) yesterday joined stakeholders in Makurdi, Benue State, for the Graduation Ceremony of the First Summer Tech Training, the Induction of Digital Benue Children Ambassadors, and the launch of the “One Student, One Computer & One Skill+” initiative organised by the Benue Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC) Plc.

The programme marked a major step in Benue State’s drive to promote digital literacy and innovation as key tools for growth and development. Officials noted that the state is prioritising technology as a way to equip young people for the future.

During the Summer Camp, more than 80 youths were trained in areas such as software development, emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and workplace readiness. The organisers explained that the training would help prepare participants for opportunities in Nigeria’s digital economy and beyond.

One of the key moments of the event was the induction of the participants as Digital Benue Children Ambassadors. According to the organisers, this initiative is designed to nurture young leaders who will promote digital culture, inspire their peers, and spread awareness of innovation and technology across their communities.

The official launch of the “One Student, One Computer & One Skill+” scheme was also highlighted as an ambitious project aimed at closing the digital divide and creating a new generation of innovators equipped with relevant ICT skills.

Representing the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, the Director of Zonal Office Coordination, Mr. Ajayi Babajide, praised the graduates and urged them to live up to their new roles. “You are stepping into a higher calling as digital ambassadors. FG N90bn NELFUND to fund school fees, upkeep of 400,000 students

0

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has committed over N90 billion to support the school fees and upkeep of 400,000 students across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Idris said the intervention was made possible through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) initiative, which was established by the Federal Government under the Access to Higher Education Act to provide loans for indigent and low-income Nigerians.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday when a platform of State Commissioners of Information, led by the Borno Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, paid him a courtesy visit, the minister explained that the scheme has allowed many students to remain in school without financial burdens on their parents and guardians.

“The Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu has committed N90 billion to NELFUND. Tinubu’s vision is that, on no account, should a Nigerian child of school age be denied going to a tertiary institution,” Idris said.

He added that the funds were not meant for tuition alone but also for the upkeep of beneficiaries across different institutions. “Therefore, this amount is not for school fees alone but also for upkeep of over 400,000 students across different tertiary institutions in the country,” he said.

According to the minister, Tinubu’s vision is tied to the holistic development and prosperity of all Nigerians. He noted that the administration was committed to serving every Nigerian, regardless of political or religious background.

“Nigeria under Tinubu is on the path to prosperity. This is my message to you. We are in government to serve the interests of all, irrespective of political parties. If you will not listen to me because I was appointed by President Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, don’t forget that your children need the NELFUND to stay in school. And also your people who have cancer need treatment and would have to access the Cancer Screening and Treatment Centre/Oncology that Tinubu provided,” he said.

The minister further emphasised that President Tinubu’s policies are designed to reach all Nigerians without discrimination. He described the student loan project as the flagship of the government’s education reforms.

NELFUND, during its first anniversary in May 2025, announced that it had received more than 550,000 applications since its launch on May 24, 2024. The Fund said it remains focused on providing access to higher education for Nigerians facing financial challenges.

FG denies paying TeenEagle winners, says Minister used own money

0

September 4, 2025 – The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified issues surrounding misinformation on social media regarding monetary gifts given to winners of the TeenEagle 2024/2025 Global Competition in the United Kingdom.

In August 2025, N200,000 was presented to Nafisah Abdullahi, winner of the TeenEagle Global Finals. Later, Nigeriastartupact.ng reported that the CEO of Manga Automobiles, Muhammad Manga, awarded N800,000 to Nafisa Abdullahi Aminu, winner of the TeenEagle World English Language Competition. The total disbursement reached N1.7 million on August 29, 2025.

The Ministry stated that the gifts presented during the national recognition event on Thursday, 28th August 2025, were personal donations from the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa. It confirmed that these gifts were not funded by the Federal Government or the Ministry.

“This gift was just a token of my appreciation of the effort made by these young girls and to also serve as encouragement to other girls and young children in Nigeria to excel,” Dr. Alausa explained.

The Ministry added that this fact was clearly announced at the event and later restated on the Minister’s verified social media handle. It described any claims suggesting otherwise as false and misleading.

It further noted that the Ministry does not have any budgetary allocation for monetary gifts. Its financial provisions remain strictly dedicated to scholarships and structured educational support for students in public tertiary institutions including universities, colleges of education, and polytechnics.

The Honourable Minister’s gesture, according to the Ministry, should be seen only as a personal act of generosity to recognise the achievements of the young winners. It was also intended to motivate Nigerian children to reach greater heights.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to excellence in education and to building a globally competitive system. It restated its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of education as the foundation of national development.

The statement concluded that this clarification should end the misinformation and encourage Nigerian children to keep striving for academic success.

FG targets 21% ICT contribution to Nigeria’s GDP by 2027

0

Nigeria’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector is set to become the main driver of the economy, with the federal government projecting it will contribute 21 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2027. The projection means the ICT industry will surpass oil and gas in shaping national growth.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, disclosed this while delivering a keynote speech at the GITEX Nigeria Tech Expo and Future Economy Conference in Lagos. The event, holding from 1-4 September across Lagos and Abuja, is organised by KAOUN International, a global producer of GITEX events.

Tijani revealed that the sector already accounts for between 16 per cent and 18 per cent of GDP, calling it the fastest-growing contributor to the economy. He said, “Our digital economy is no longer about apps alone, it is about productivity gains that will transform agriculture, education, manufacturing, and governance.”

The minister also pointed out that Nigeria remains the largest telecommunications market in Africa, while Lagos serves as the continent’s innovation capital with five to six unicorns based in the city.

Unveiling major federal initiatives, Tijani introduced Project Bridge, a 90,000km fibre backbone to link every state and local government; the 3MTT programme, described as the world’s largest digital skills initiative; and the upcoming National Digital Economy and New Governance Bill, which will promote trust, security, and accountability in the digital environment.

“Lagos is where the idea of Africa collides with the ambition of the future,” Tijani noted, stressing that startups, corporates, academics, the diaspora, and global partners must work with government to co-create sustainable solutions, with infrastructure as the backbone.

In his remarks, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described Lagos as “a launchpad for Africa’s tomorrow” and reaffirmed the state’s role as a digital economy hub for Nigeria and Africa.

Sanwo-Olu explained, “Lagos is not just a city for today – it is Africa’s innovation nerve centre and a launchpad for Africa’s tomorrow. At the heart of our efforts to unlock digital transformation possibilities is an unshakeable belief that governance in the 21st century must be digital, inclusive, and data-driven.”

He added: “As Peter Drucker once said, ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it’. Here in Lagos, we are creating that future, building a data-driven government where policy decisions respond to real-time insights and inclusive connectivity empowers every citizen in one of the world’s most vibrant tech ecosystems.”

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has restated his commitment to positioning the state as a leader in Nigeria’s drive to achieve a one trillion dollar economy by 2030. He said the government would rely on innovation, technology, and strategic collaborations to achieve this vision.

Speaking at the opening of the GITEX Nigeria Tech Expo and Future Economy Conference 2025, Sanwo-Olu described Lagos as a cornerstone of Africa’s digital transformation and a hub of opportunities for investors.

The governor explained that Lagos is already home to 23 of Nigeria’s fastest-growing companies, as identified by the Financial Times. According to him, this achievement is driven by a dynamic innovation ecosystem supported by progressive government policies, strong private sector investment, and an energetic startup culture.

“We’re not just showcasing technology today; we’re forging partnerships and igniting innovation to propel Nigeria toward its one trillion dollar economic target,” Sanwo-Olu said.

His remarks come as President Bola Tinubu continues to push the ambition of transforming Nigeria into a trillion-dollar economy within the decade.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised that Lagos is more than just a city, describing it as a movement. He urged innovators and stakeholders at the expo to seize opportunities, connect with global players, and help shape a future that would place Nigeria and Africa as leaders in the digital economy.

The GITEX Expo is organised by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with KAOUN International, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, and the National Information Technology Development Agency. The event is regarded as one of the largest gatherings of global and local technology leaders. Participants at this year’s edition include IBM, Meta, MTN, AWS, Cisco, and a wide range of Nigerian startups.

Sanwo-Olu also commended the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, for advancing artificial intelligence infrastructure and driving inclusive digital solutions that continue to improve Nigeria’s global technology reputation.

In his remarks, Dr. Tijani said the rapid growth of Lagos, which attracts about 2,000 new residents every day, has made it urgent to expand digital infrastructure. He announced that a new government-backed programme will launch on October 1, funding 75 additional digital research projects. The minister explained that this initiative is aimed at strengthening collaboration between Nigerian researchers, entrepreneurs, and the diaspora community.

He further stressed the importance of partnerships between startups, corporates, and government to scale innovation and build resilience across Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

NYSC resumes N44,000 arrears payment after two-month break

0

September 3, 2025 – The National Youth Service Corps on Wednesday resumed the payment of arrears, marking the first disbursement since June 3 after a two-month break.

This N44,000 arrears payment is connected to the new N77,000 monthly allowance recently approved by the Federal Government.

On April 5, the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, assured corps members that those who recently completed their service year would also receive the new allowance.

Speaking at the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja, Nafiu explained, “Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details.”

He also emphasised the Federal Government’s commitment, saying, “Nigerians should not fret about that because the government is both responsible and responsive to their needs.”

The latest disbursement covers arrears from July 2024 to March 2025. This development follows months of frustration from corps members over delays in the implementation of the new allowance.

The N77,000 monthly allowance had earlier been approved by the Federal Government as part of efforts to reduce economic hardship faced by Nigerian youth.

A previously serving corps member confirmed the development, saying, “After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert. But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count.”

Others have taken to social media platforms, including Facebook, to confirm they have received alerts. Some banks, including Access Bank, have already started disbursing the arrears.

The arrears SMS carry ‘Feb 2025’, which indicates February payments.
