G4EP launches free digital skills training for Nigerian girls

0

The Gender Education, Engagement, Empowerment, and Entrepreneurship Programme (G4EP) has unveiled a new training initiative for young girls across Nigeria, describing it as a step toward empowering the girl-child through education, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation.

According to the organisers, the initiative falls under its flagship project called Renewed Hope for Inclusion, Support, and Empowerment, and aligns with the Federal Government’s renewed hope agenda.

“By providing access to in-demand creative and digital skills, the programme is designed to foster inclusion and create real opportunities for girls to thrive in today’s tech-driven world, ensuring that no one is left behind,” the statement read.

The organisers explained that the training will focus on photography, web design, cinematography, and graphic design, which they described as four powerful areas in today’s creative and digital economy.

“By equipping young girls with these in-demand skills, G4EP seeks not only to bridge the gender gap in technology and media but also to empower participants to become creators, innovators, and leaders in their chosen fields,” the organisers added.

They noted that digital literacy and creativity now open doors to limitless opportunities. “Whether through photography that tells compelling stories, websites that shape businesses, graphics that communicate powerful messages, or films that inspire, young people are rewriting narratives and shaping society. Unfortunately, many girls are often left behind due to a lack of access, mentorship, or financial support.”

Highlighting the accessibility of the programme, the organisers stressed that registration and training are completely free of charge. “This ensures that every girl, regardless of financial background, has equal access to world-class training and mentorship. With the free training commencing on September 8th, 2025, G4EP has removed barriers that often limit the girl child. This is the true spirit of Renewed Hope, giving every girl a fair chance to learn, grow, and shine,” they said.

Chairman of G4EP, Judith Ogbara, described the Renewed Hope for Inclusion, Support, and Empowerment (RISE) project as one focused on inclusion, empowerment, and creating pathways for the girl child to rise above limitations. She maintained that through the training, the programme is preparing girls to compete globally in technology, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

“With this initiative, G4EP continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to the empowerment of girls in Nigeria. By equipping them with creative and digital skills, the program is shaping a new generation of storytellers, innovators, and entrepreneurs who will leave their mark on the world,” Ogbara stated.

She added that interested applicants can register through the official G4EP training portal. Selected participants, she said, will receive mentorship, practical sessions, and access to industry-standard resources throughout the programme.

0

The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, CON, has commended the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for 73 years of excellence and for successfully conducting the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

He said reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda are reshaping Nigeria’s education sector through smarter curricula, stronger digital infrastructure, enhanced teacher training, improved tertiary governance, and reforms in medical education.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that these reforms will make education the backbone of national transformation, job creation, and wealth generation.

He noted that the shift to computer-based testing (CBT) will protect exam integrity, reduce malpractice, and boost global credibility.

The Minister praised WAEC’s digital innovations, including the Digital Examiners’ Mark Sheet, WAEC Konnect, and the Digital Certificate Platform. “The greatest legacy we can leave our youth is quality education built on credibility and fairness,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Vice Chairman Senator Ekong Samson described the reforms as “an idea whose time has come,” assuring that the National Assembly will give its full support.

Rep. Oboku Oforji called on WAEC to establish at least one CBT centre in each of the 774 local government areas before 2026, pledging legislative backing for the initiative.

WAEC Board Chairman, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, said the transition to CBT marks a paradigm shift that aligns with international best practices.

WAEC Head, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, confirmed that the full rollout of CB-WASSCE for schools will begin in 2026. He promised faster results, reduced malpractice, and eco-friendly examinations.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to credible, technology-driven exams and world-class education for every Nigerian child.

FG to create 50 million jobs for unemployed citizens

0

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has said that Nigeria is creating an enabling environment to generate over 50 million jobs for unemployed citizens and deliver sustained, inclusive growth.

This was disclosed during a news conference in Abuja where the Bureau showcased its scorecard and milestone achievements.

The Director General of BPE, Ayodeji Gbeleyi, explained that the federal government is committed to generating jobs by fostering a favorable business environment through policy reforms and infrastructure development. He noted that government is also supporting entrepreneurship, promoting skills training, and investing in critical sectors.

Mr Gbeleyi said the Bureau is liberalizing the economy through the privatization of state-owned enterprises to create jobs and attract direct investment. According to him, “the policy objectives of the privatisation programme aim to reduce inefficiencies and optimize state-owned enterprises, infuse private capital, technology, and innovation, dismantle monopolies and reduce debt borrowing, attract foreign direct investment, and create jobs.”

He explained that the federal government is paying special attention to social sectors, with a focus on human capital development, education, health, and social development, in order to complement fiscal and revenue resources of governments.

“We have driven revenue generation by focusing on 15 strategic projects to generate N312.3 billion for the 2025 appropriation through asset sales and privatisation,” Mr Gbeleyi stated.

Speaking on past reforms, the DG recalled that before liberalisation in the telecom sector, Nigeria had barely 400,000 telephone lines which were hardly functional due to the monopoly of NITEL and ENTEL. He noted, “As of the end of July this year, telephone subscribers in the country were 169.3 million. Tele-density 78.11%. Internet subscription at 138.7 million. Broadband subscription of 104.1 million. Penetration of 48.81%. Contribution to GDP.”

On power sector reforms, he explained that the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) is delivering 2.5 million meters to Nigerians to close the metering gap. He added that the program, approved by President Bola Tinubu, will deploy over 7 million smart meters to end estimated billing, reduce energy losses, increase revenue for distribution companies, and create over 20,000 jobs.

The Director General also highlighted reforms in the pension sector. “Prior to the pension reform, which was also anchored by the Bureau in 2004, we had situations where men and women who had served our country meritoriously had to endure long queues to get their minimum pension payment. But with the Pension Reform Act in 2004, we established a supervisory and regulatory framework and licensed operators. About 23 pension fund administrators are in the country, with the registration of over 10.79 million RSA accounts as at the end of June 2025,” he said.

Mr Gbeleyi explained that reforms have also impacted the transport and aviation sectors. According to him, 26 port terminals were leased or concessioned by the Nigerian Ports Authority across six Nigerian ports including Apapa, Tinkan, Tinkan Island, Kalabawori, and Kodakot. This, he said, has reduced turnaround time for ships and cargo.

“In the aviation sector, NACO, the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, and SAPO were also privatised by the BPE. Total assets were 3.3 billion back in December 2024; it has grown to 41.7 billion. Market share, which was just a mere 21%, is also catching up at 40%,” the DG explained.

He said ongoing reforms in the power sector would further increase generation capacity and improve electricity supply nationwide.

The BPE boss also pointed to the role of technology in economic growth. He said that over 500 digital hubs across the country are contributing to economic growth, fostering entrepreneurship, and bridging the digital divide. He added that more than 1.2 million jobs have been created through point-of-sale operations, alongside 500,000 direct jobs, expanding the e-commerce market which was valued at about 15 billion in 2023.

Mr Gbeleyi stressed that under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, the Bureau remains committed to driving inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.

He highlighted eight key focus areas for the Renewed Hope agenda. These include reforming the economy to deliver sustainable, inclusive growth, enhancing infrastructure and transportation, unlocking energy and national resources for development, and investing in education, health, and social investment.

Other priorities are boosting agriculture to achieve food security, accelerating diversification through industrialization and digitization, supporting creative industries and manufacturing, and strengthening technological security for peace and prosperity.

We’ll Not Run Ibom Hotels at a Loss Again – Gov Umo Eno

0

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has assured that hospitality facilities owned by the state government will no longer operate at a loss under his administration.

The Governor gave the assurance while answering questions from Government House correspondents after inspecting ongoing renovation works at the Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort.

Governor Eno explained that Akwa Ibom has several hospitality facilities, including the Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, the Four Points by Sheraton in Ikot Ekpene, the developing ARISE Resort, and facilities in Lagos and Abuja. He stressed that these establishments must be managed as profit-driven ventures.

“We can’t put so much money into facilities like this, and they keep reporting deficit because we want an international brand. We can be our own brand,” he stated.

To achieve this, the Governor, who is a Fellow of the Nigerian Hotel and Catering Institute (NHCI), revealed that a strategic hospitality management group will be set up to create and sustain a state-owned brand.

“Five or six years ago, Ibom Air was not a brand, but today, it is a brand to reckon with. You can create your brand. Each and everyone of us has our identity. It is now left for us to develop our identity,” he said.

Governor Eno also called on indigenous professionals in the hospitality industry, both at home and abroad, to contribute to the growth of Akwa Ibom’s hospitality sector.

“There is no hotel in this country that you will not find an Akwa Ibom son or daughter at the hierarchy of management. So we call on them to return home and put that same energy in turning around our hotel facilities,” he urged.

He emphasized that experienced hoteliers of Akwa Ibom origin who have made their mark in the industry will be given the opportunity to showcase their expertise in running state facilities.

The Governor noted that his visit was to check prototype rooms and confirm their readiness for use before the December festive season.

“Once we sort this out, I am told we should be able to deliver the first 40 rooms in October, so that we can start using it in December, preparatory for Christmas,” he explained.

He further disclosed that the facility upgrade would be carried out in phases until the hotel undergoes a complete transformation.

Governor Eno pointed out that Akwa Ibom possesses valuable hospitality assets that require professionalism in key areas such as front desk management, housekeeping, engineering, reservations, and audit. He stressed that these areas will be harmonized to create an operational manual that guarantees uniform standards across all state-owned facilities.

“This is necessary and important so that if I am here in Uyo or in Abuja, we already know the standard and it would be the same. Uniforms, attitude, and the likes must be the same. It takes a lot of training and retraining to achieve that,” he said.

During the inspection, the Governor toured sections of the facility undergoing renovation. He was accompanied by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, members of the State Executive Council, delivery advisors, and other officials.

Governor Eno reiterated that the hospitality sector in Akwa Ibom will be repositioned to ensure profitability, boost tourism, and create sustainable jobs for the people.

Adamawa health insurance enrollment to empower vulnerable groups

0

Maiha Local Government Area recently held a one-day sensitization campaign on the Community-Based Health Insurance program. The event was organized to educate stakeholders on how to identify, select, and enroll vulnerable groups into the scheme.

The campaign brought together community leaders, ward development committees, health workers, women leaders, and youth representatives. The aim was to create better understanding and ensure active participation in the program.

As part of the day’s activities, an advocacy visit was paid to the Executive Secretary of the Primary Health Care Development Authority Maiha. During the visit, the objectives of the program were explained, and assurances of support and collaboration were received.

Declaring the session open, the Executive Secretary PHCDA Maiha described the initiative as a breakthrough for the community. He said: “This initiative is a milestone for our communities. By working together, we can ensure that no vulnerable person in Maiha is left behind when it comes to accessing quality healthcare.”

Also speaking, the representative of the Executive Secretary, Adamawa State Contributory Health Management Agency, emphasized the role of government in supporting the scheme. She noted: “The state government remains committed to strengthening community-based health insurance. Stakeholders at the grassroots are vital in identifying and enrolling the right beneficiaries to achieve universal health coverage.”

The technical session featured detailed presentations on the CBHI model. Facilitators explained the processes for identifying beneficiaries and the roles stakeholders are expected to play. The session was interactive, with participants engaging in questions and answers to gain clarity.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the District Head of Maiha commended both the organizers and the participants. He said: “We are grateful for the support given to our communities. This sensitization will go a long way in improving access to health services for our vulnerable groups, and we pledge our continued cooperation.”

The sensitization campaign is expected to make the identification and enrollment process more transparent and inclusive. Vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children under five, gender-based violence survivors, and fistula survivors are expected to benefit.

With improved awareness and stronger community involvement, the program aims to expand access to essential health services. It is also projected to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare spending for vulnerable households in Maiha.

Kaduna bans unruly sign-outs, issues school fee rules

0

The Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA) has issued new regulations to guide schools in Kaduna State. The public notice, dated 2nd September 2025 with reference KSSQAA/GEN.98/VOL.VI, was signed by the Director-General, Professor Usman Abubakar Zaria.

The authority explained that the directives are in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education. It said the move is meant to protect proprietors, administrators, learners, parents, guardians, and the wider community.

On graduation ceremonies, KSSQAA said schools have been compelling parents to pay for events at all class levels. “It has been observed that some schools organize graduation ceremonies for every class level and compel parents or guardians to bear the costs. This practice undermines government’s efforts to reduce the cost of education and improve access for all children,” the notice stated.

The authority clarified that graduation events must now be restricted to completion of Basic 9 (JSS 3) and Senior Secondary Education (SS 3/SSCE). It added that participation or payment should not be compulsory. Where schools plan compulsory payments, they must seek clearance from KSSQAA at least four weeks before the event with evidence of Parent-Teacher Association consent.

Another area of concern raised was the unruly “sign-out” culture by students at the end of examinations. The authority described such practices as unsafe and directed schools to enforce discipline. “Schools are expected to provide well-supervised alternatives such as farewell assemblies, talent exhibitions, mentorship handover sessions, or other structured activities,” the notice said.

KSSQAA also addressed the issue of consumable textbooks. It noted that textbooks with built-in worksheets prevent reuse, increase costs for parents, and cause unnecessary waste. The authority announced that by September 1, 2026, publishers must provide optional workbooks separately while ensuring that textbooks remain reusable. Schools were instructed to only procure and recommend reusable textbooks.

On school fees, the authority stated that no proprietor is allowed to increase tuition or upgrade their institution without written approval. “Approval requires PTA agreement with quorum, a formal application stating reasons, enrolment data, current and proposed fees, and attached PTA minutes,” it explained. Any unauthorized increment, it warned, will attract sanctions.

Professor Zaria said the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority is committed to ensuring that education in the state remains accessible and affordable. He emphasized that all schools must comply fully with the directives.

FG to Certify 100,000 Nigerian Artisans by 2025

0

The Federal Government has announced plans to upskill over 100,000 artisans to international standards by December 2025. This was disclosed by Mr. Afiz Ogun, Director-General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), during an inspection tour of the Skill Up Artisans Programme (SUPA) training centers in Jos, Plateau State, on Tuesday.

Ogun explained that the initiative is aimed at improving the economic well-being of Nigerians by equipping artisans with skills that meet global demands. He stated that the programme began last year with a foundation phase where about 29,000 artisans were trained.

“The SUPA is a big programme which started last year with the foundation programme, where we trained about 29,000 artisans. This year the target is 100,000 and we would be upscaling them to international standards,” he said.

According to him, the ongoing programme would provide artisans with international certification that would place them on equal footing with their peers abroad. “Where a plumber in Nigeria has his own international certificate that nobody can look down upon him anywhere in the world,” Ogun added.

The ITF Director-General appealed to the private sector to collaborate with the government in establishing skill training centers rather than focusing on setting up private schools. He noted that such centers would not only empower the youth but also strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global workforce.

“We are begging well-meaning Nigerians, instead of you forming private schools here and there, establish training centers, and you will gain from it. Nigerians are waking up now, even though they have children in schools, they still want them to learn one skill or the other,” he said.

During the inspection, some beneficiaries of the training also shared their experiences. Fauziya Bayero, a fashion trainee, said the training has given her the opportunity to acquire skills that will make her competitive globally. Similarly, Onovo Okon, a CNG trainee, expressed optimism that the international certification would help him advance in his profession.

The training centres visited during the tour included a Metal Fabrication and CNG conversion centre, a fashion workshop, a mechanic workshop, and an ITF staff training centre.
