FG Clarifies FGN-ASUU Agreement, Confirms 2009 as Last Signed Deal

0

The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has issued a clarification on his statement regarding agreements between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Speaking on August 28, 2025, during an interaction with the press, the Minister explained that his remarks were in reference to the unsigned 2021 draft document.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the FGN-ASUU Agreement was last signed in 2009. That agreement remains the most recent signed and binding agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU,” Dr. Alausa stated.

The clarification comes amid renewed public debate over the long-standing dispute between the Federal Government and ASUU, a matter that has affected the stability of Nigeria’s higher education system. The Minister noted that in 2017, the then Honourable Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, inaugurated a renegotiation committee to review the 2009 agreement. This process produced the draft Nimi Briggs Agreement in May 2021. However, the Federal Government did not sign the draft.

“When I said there had been no new signed agreement with ASUU, I was referring specifically to the 2021 draft Nimi Briggs document, which has not been formally executed,” Dr. Alausa explained.

The Ministry of Education further reaffirmed that the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement remains the last formally signed agreement, while the 2021 draft serves only as a framework for ongoing discussions. The Minister stressed that the Federal Government is committed to ending the 16-year stalemate with ASUU in a way that is sustainable and constitutionally backed, ensuring universities remain open for teaching, learning, and research.

The Ministry urged stakeholders and the public to disregard any misinterpretations and assured that under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the government remains firm in its commitment to resolving the issues with ASUU.

He said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to providing quality education for all children, especially those from poor backgrounds.

According to the Governor, a total of 996 students will be admitted this year out of 2,172 candidates nominated from the 361 wards across the state. He explained that admissions will be strictly merit-based, with special priority given to gifted children from poor families.

“All admitted students will enjoy fully sponsored education, which includes uniforms, computers, internet access, accommodation, 24-hour electricity, and qualified teachers,” Governor Radda stated. He confirmed that the school in Radda will open this month, while those in Jikamshi and Dumurkul will be completed before the end of the year.

“We have changed the narrative in all spheres of our national life whether social, economic, cultural, sports, agriculture, education, international diplomacy,” he stated.

The Vice President commended the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency and the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, for their efforts in preserving Nigeria’s geo-heritage sites.

“I want to acknowledge the UNESCO IGGP’s alignment with our Renewed Hope Agenda and also recognise your committee’s objective in promoting sustainable geo-science development themes under climate change, hydro-geology, geo-hazards, geo-dynamics and geo-heritage,” Shettima said.

He encouraged the IGGP team to expand its geoscience coverage across Nigeria’s geo-political zones, assuring them of continuous support for the committee’s activities.

“There are a lot of economic and development benefits of geo-heritage – jobs, sustainable tourism and of course, peace in host communities and international research funding. This country is a blessed country, hence, all hands must be on deck to make it work. I urge you to come on board, let us work as a team to reposition this country,” he added.

They will pursue Masters programmes at the prestigious Rashtriya Raksha University, Gujarat State, India. The institution is a foremost national security and police university under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
