0

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, has expressed confidence in the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd., under the Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari. He said the management has the capacity to deliver on ongoing reforms in the company and to set new benchmarks for corporate governance across Africa’s extractive industry.

Dr. Orji made this known during a courtesy call on the NNPC Management at the NNPC Towers in Abuja on Thursday. He commended the vision of the new NNPC leadership, explaining that their assumption into office comes at a defining moment for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. According to him, reforms, renewed investor confidence, and expanded indigenous participation are reshaping the country’s extractive sector.

He encouraged NNPC Ltd. to position itself as a model of transparency, accountability, efficiency, and civic engagement, adding that these values remain vital for restoring public trust and safeguarding the company as Nigeria’s most valuable national asset.

Responding, the GCEO, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, assured that NNPC Ltd. will continue its collaboration with NEITI in advancing openness and corporate governance in line with global transparency and accountability standards.

He emphasized that the company has already reinstated the publication of monthly financial and operational reports and has strengthened internal reporting systems to ensure improved accountability.

“In terms of full compliance to NEITI principles and global EITI standards, you have my full commitment. We will look to your guidance as we deepen this. We are already doing a lot of internal transformation to deepen transparency in our operational reporting and performance reviews,” Ojulari said.

He added that the NNPC Ltd. would rely on NEITI’s global experience to provide feedback on performance reviews. On the forthcoming NEITI 2024 Oil and Gas Audit, Ojulari said the company is fully prepared to provide comprehensive data for both the 2024 and 2025 audits, while leveraging technology to guarantee efficiency and timeliness.

Ojulari also re-stated the mandate of President Bola Tinubu to the new NNPC Ltd. management team to ramp up oil and gas production and expand refining capacity. He explained that achieving these goals will require attracting at least 60 billion dollars in new investments.

He stressed that this can only be achieved through sustained reforms, stronger investor confidence, and solid partnerships with industry operators, government agencies, and accountability institutions such as NEITI.

Katsina State, Firm train 100 youths on solar and electrical installations

AB-Tech Multi-System Ltd in collaboration with the Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) Katsina has organized a one-month free training program on basic solar and electrical installations and maintenance for 100 youths in Katsina State.

The initiative was designed to address the rising problem of unemployment and lack of practical skills among young people in the community.

According to the organizers, the training was introduced after identifying the challenges faced by many youths who struggle without technical skills that can help them build sustainable careers. “Without such skills, they risk unemployment and missed opportunities for self reliance which sometimes lead to being lured into drug abuse and criminal activities,” AB-Tech noted.

The program combined both theoretical and practical sessions to ensure participants gained hands-on experience in solar energy and electrical maintenance. The training also included women, giving them the chance to develop relevant skills in renewable energy.

“Most importantly, at the end of the program, empowerment tools will be provided to the trainees so they can immediately start using their skills to earn a living,” the company added.

Katsina State, which has been dealing with security challenges and the menace of banditry, is expected to benefit socially and economically from this initiative. The organizers explained that the training will contribute to job creation and promote the use of renewable energy through solar installations.

The socio-economic impacts of the program include the creation of self employment opportunities, reduction of youth unemployment, promotion of innovation, and growth of local businesses. It also encourages young people to embrace self reliance while supporting the expansion of renewable energy solutions.

“This initiative is a big step towards empowering young people with relevant skills, creating future entrepreneurs and building a stronger society where energy solutions like solar power are promoted,” AB-Tech Multi-System Ltd emphasized.

FG NIPOST orders Nigerians to pay $80 Customs Duty on US shipments

0

August 29, 2025 – Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has issued a public notice to customers regarding a new policy change from the United States Government. The update follows the Executive Order on “Suspending Duty-Free De Minimis Treatment for All Countries,” which was enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

According to NIPOST, this Executive Order affects all postal operators and designated postal administrations across the world. It applies to every country, not just Nigeria, and requires the payment of additional customs duty on global postal inflows into the United States.

“With effect from 29th August 2025, and in compliance with the Executive Order, all postal items to the United States, except for letters and documents, will now attract a prepaid customs duty of USD $80 or its Naira equivalent at the point of acceptance in Nigeria,” NIPOST said in its notice.

The agency explained that global logistics operations are also experiencing disruptions as airlines and cargo carriers are adopting more cautious measures for U.S.-bound shipments. This could lead to longer transit and processing times, resulting in possible delivery delays for packages and courier services.

NIPOST further noted that all shipments headed to the United States will now undergo Customs checks at their destination. This development adds another layer of regulation to international shipping, affecting businesses, e-commerce transactions, and personal shipments between Nigeria and the U.S.

The postal agency added that it is engaging with international stakeholders. “NIPOST is actively engaging with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and our airline partners to minimize service disruptions and safeguard customer experience,” the statement read.

Reassuring its customers, NIPOST maintained its commitment to safe, reliable, and efficient postal and courier services despite the global regulatory adjustments.

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has restated its commitment to resolving the long-standing issues with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in a sustainable, realistic, and constitutionally backed way.

Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa CON explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Education, working with relevant agencies, to deliver a lasting solution that will stop future disruptions to the academic calendar. He noted that the administration will not enter into “unsustainable agreements” but will focus on solutions that are practical, affordable, implementable, and constitutionally sound.

“Mr. President has mandated myself and the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, to work with all stakeholders to resolve this issue once and for all. Nigerians can be assured that this process is being handled with the highest level of diligence, accountability, and honesty of purpose,” Dr. Alausa stated.

The Minister assured Nigerians that recent ASUU protests would not escalate into strike action. He explained that the Federal Government has been engaging the union continuously and constructively.

He further noted that progress has already been achieved on key demands, including the payment and mainstreaming of earned academic allowances. On the issue of outstanding 35 percent wage arrears, he clarified that payments will be made once government begins payment to other public servants.

The meeting held in Abuja at the Ministry of Education was attended by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, the Solicitor-General of the Federation, Permanent Secretaries from the Ministries of Education, Labour and Justice, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, the Budget Office, and the Chairman of the Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. The gathering reviewed ASUU’s proposals line by line.

A technical committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel Enitan, has been inaugurated to produce a clean counter-draft. The draft will be presented to the Yayale Ahmed-led Committee for further negotiations with ASUU.

Unlike in previous negotiations, the Ministry of Justice will be fully part of the process to ensure that the final agreement is constitutionally compliant.

Dr. Alausa expressed confidence that with mutual respect and continuous dialogue, the government will achieve a resolution that permanently ends the cycle of disputes and strikes affecting universities.

“This government does not want strikes. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu strongly believes that young people are the heartbeat of this nation, and he is determined to keep our children in school. We are committed to this task with sincerity, transparency, and respect for all parties,” he affirmed.

The Federal Government also appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and supportive as it works toward closing the chapter of recurring disputes with ASUU. It stressed that a sustainable agreement that will stand the test of time is the ultimate goal of the administration.

Reports claim Senate to revisit NPower unpaid stipend issue

Circulating information suggests that the Nigerian Senate may be set to revisit the NPower unpaid stipend issue under the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP).

The source of this development has been linked to Comrade Bashir Usman Gobir, who has been sharing updates regarding the matter.

However, as there is no official confirmation by the Nigerian Senate yet, expectant beneficiaries are urged to treat the information as unverified while waiting for formal communication from the federal government.

This report comes only a few days after NPower beneficiaries held a meeting with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday, August 25, 2025, to deliberate on the delays. According to Gobir, “The Nigerian Senate is set to hold another discussion on issues relating to the NPower programme, following the long-standing delays in payment of allowances owed by the government.”

He further explained that in July, under the leadership of the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, the Senate had intervened by organizing a meeting that brought together government officials, the legal team representing the complainants, and the affected beneficiaries.

Gobir revealed, “During the meeting, it was confirmed that the federal government owes NPower beneficiaries over ₦81 billion, and it was promised that the payment would be included in the 2025 national budget.”

Although this update is generating reactions, there has been a lot of circulating and sometimes repetitive information about the NPower issue. Beneficiaries are therefore urged to remain hopeful and continue to wait for official updates from the federal government, particularly from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, which oversees the programme.
