Bauchi Govt urges youth innovation at Children in Tech Project

Hon. Mohammed Atiku Isah, the Special Adviser on Youth and Entrepreneurship to the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, has praised the achievements of young participants at the closing ceremony of a two-day digital skills program in Bauchi.

The program, organized by American Space Bauchi in collaboration with Co-Innovate to Impact Hub and MicroBlocks, focused on empowering children with practical knowledge in technology and coding. The event, held on August 28, 2025, featured the “Children in Tech” project, which introduced young learners to innovation and problem-solving skills.

Delivering his remarks as Special Guest of Honour, Hon. Isah expressed joy at the enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the participants. “First, let me say how excited I am to be here with you all today. When I walked into this room and saw the energy, the smiles, and the amazing projects you’ve been working on, I felt truly proud. Each of you has shown that you are not just the leaders of tomorrow—you are already innovators today,” he stated.

He described the “Children in Tech” initiative as a timely and commendable step toward preparing young people for the future. According to him, “By providing a platform for them to explore, create, and innovate, we are not only shaping their future but also the future of our society.”

Over the course of the program, participants were taught how to transform ideas into real projects through coding and interactive tools. Hon. Isah highlighted the importance of such learning, noting, “Over the past two days, you’ve learned how to take an idea, write some blocks of code, and actually bring it to life, whether it’s making lights dance, creating messages, or building interactive projects. That is the power of technology: it allows us to turn imagination into reality. And you have just taken your first steps into that world.”

He emphasized that the lessons extended beyond technical skills. “What you learned here is not just about computers or LEDs. It’s about problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. These are the real skills that will help you succeed in life, no matter what career you choose,” he explained.

Encouraging the participants, Hon. Isah urged them to stay curious and continue experimenting. “Never stop being curious. Never stop asking ‘why’ and ‘what if.’ And most importantly, never stop believing that you can create something that makes the world better,” he advised.

He further commended the facilitators and partners for their role in driving innovation. “To the organizers, Co-Innovate to Impact Hub, the facilitators, and our partners at the American Space and MicroBlocks, I want to say a big thank you. What you are doing here is not just teaching coding, you are planting seeds of innovation that will grow into something much bigger for Bauchi State, for Nigeria, and for the world,” he said.

In his closing remarks, he encouraged the children to see themselves as future leaders in the digital space. “To the participants, I want you to go home today with one promise to yourself: keep building, keep experimenting, and keep dreaming. You may not realize it now, but in this very room, we may have future inventors, tech leaders, and entrepreneurs who will change the way we live. Congratulations to you all, and I can’t wait to see where your creativity takes you,” he concluded.

UNDP receives 20,210 cyber Security applications, selection complete

UNDP West and Central Africa has announced the completion of its regional training selection process on cyber security. According to the organizers, “Months ago, we launched a call to equip young people across West and Central Africa with cyber security skills.

The response was overwhelming.” A total of 20,210 applications were received from 24 countries across West and Central Africa, reflecting the growing interest in technology and data protection.

UNDP noted that all 24 countries were represented in the application process. Officials said, “The selection process is now complete. Stay tuned for the results and next steps.”

Ebonyi Govt Increases Minimum Wage to N90,000

Ebonyi State Government has announced an upward review of the minimum wage for civil servants from N70,000 to N90,000. The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the state Executive Council meeting.

Omebe explained that the increment was aimed at improving workers’ welfare and would take immediate effect, covering all categories of the state workforce. “We want to state categorically that this is not a political statement, as this government does not toy with workers’ welfare,” he said.

The commissioner also revealed that the government had cleared pension and gratuities of state retirees from the creation of Ebonyi in 1996 to date. He added that the verification process for retirees in Local Government Areas had commenced, and payments would follow its completion.

“If the government did not play politics with such huge financial obligations, it would not do so with additional N20,000 to workers,” Omebe stated. He further described the governor as “a leader, builder of capacity, human beings and infrastructure,” stressing that the administration was anchored on the biblical people’s charter of needs mantra.

Omebe also confirmed that the Executive Council considered the implementation of the eighth-year tenure policy for directors. According to him, the decision included the immediate retirement of those who had served in the same cadre for the specified period.

“The EXCO exhaustively deliberated on the issue and approved its implementation for the affected permanent secretaries and directors,” he said.

Akwa Ibom, BOI launch entrepreneurialworkshop for Matching Funds applicants

Akwa Ibom State Government in partnership with the Bank of Industry has commenced a 2-Day Entrepreneurial Capacity Building Workshop for applicants of the AKSG/BOI Matching Funds Scheme.

The workshop, which started today at the Centre, is designed to provide participants with practical business strategies, financial management skills, and the knowledge needed to access and manage the Matching Funds opportunity.

According to the organizers, “the training is equipping participants with the knowledge, business strategies, and financial management skills required to successfully access and manage the Matching Funds opportunity.” The sessions are aimed at strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Akwa Ibom State and preparing beneficiaries for sustainable growth.

Day two of the capacity building continues tomorrow with more hands-on training for entrepreneurs. To ensure lasting impact, the workshop will now be held twice every month, offering continuous support for business owners across the state.

Minister Tijani Makes TIME100AI 2025 List for Nigeria’s AI Growth

Nigeria’s Federal Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has been named among TIME’s list of the TIME100AI of 2025, a recognition he described as proof of the country’s growing influence in the global Artificial Intelligence space.

Reacting to the honour, Tijani said, “Proud to be included on TIME’s list of the TIME100AI of 2025, a recognition that underscores Nigeria’s growing role in shaping the global future of Artificial Intelligence. This honour is a reflection of the collective effort of innovators and partners who believe in the potential of AI to transform societies.”

The minister highlighted the country’s progress over the last two years, pointing to the National AI Strategy (NAIS), which brought together over 120 experts of Nigerian descent to co-create a long-term framework for the responsible development and use of Artificial Intelligence.

He noted that research and demonstration projects are already showing the practical applications of AI in healthcare, agriculture, education, and financial inclusion.

Tijani also stressed the importance of partnerships in driving growth, saying, “With the support of partners like Google, the Gates Foundation, and others, we are facilitating the scaling of mature AI solutions from Nigerian innovators, providing resources, mentorship, and support necessary to translate ideas into impact.”

He further explained that Nigeria is committed to the sustainability of Artificial Intelligence through initiatives such as the AI Collective, a community of researchers and practitioners launched with the support of the Luminate Group. This effort is backed by the AI Trust, a body of national leaders tasked with ensuring continued investment in the sector.

According to him, the TIME recognition validates Nigeria’s position as a potential global leader in inclusive and responsible Artificial Intelligence.

“As we continue on this journey, my commitment remains clear: to ensure AI not only drives innovation, but also contributes to building a $1 trillion economy as envisioned by His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” Tijani stated.

CODE Rejects Daily Post Claim on Bauchi Education Despite N40bn Allocation

Abuja – 28th August 2025 – Connected Development (CODE) has reacted to a report published by Daily Post on 20th August 2025 and credited to Timi Owolabi. The report, titled “Bauchi ranked among worst states for education despite N40bn allocation Expert,” was linked to CODE’s recent launch of the Transparency and Accountability Report of the Education Sector in Bauchi State under the Girl-Child Education Project supported by Malala Fund, tagged Roadmap to Equality. Tools for Transforming Girls’ Education in Bauchi State.

In a press statement, CODE explained that the report misrepresented the objectives and outcomes of the event.

According to the organization, “the reporter in question was not present at the event, and no CODE representative granted an interview of the nature quoted.” CODE stressed that the misrepresentation distracted from what was a landmark event aimed at strengthening education delivery in Bauchi State.

The organization clarified that the launch focused on findings from a research study, highlighting practical tools for engaging communities and stressing the role of both mothers and fathers in supporting girl-child education. CODE noted that this was not a general critique of the state’s education reforms but rather an effort to provide strategies for inclusive education and improved service delivery.

Speaking further, CODE emphasized that its work in Bauchi has been grounded in collaboration. “Over the years, we have found in the Bauchi State Government a responsive and collaborative ally in addressing the challenges of out-of-school children,” the statement read. The group added that progress had been recorded through joint efforts, with the government showing greater openness to inclusive education and accountability in the education sector.

CODE maintained that civil society organizations cannot work in isolation and that their mandate is to complement government efforts, bridge gaps where necessary, and ensure accountability in service delivery. The organization reiterated that this spirit of partnership has been central to its interventions and will continue to shape its work in Bauchi State.

FG Introduces Lifetime Salary Benefits for Senior Officers

August 28, 2025 – The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced a new policy that grants lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.

The development, approved by President Bola Tinubu, was described as a major boost to officer welfare. Dr. Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Thursday while speaking at the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he presented the achievements of the ministry and restated its commitment to improving institutional capacity across agencies.

This was contained in a statement signed by the NPRO/Head, Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF PO Abraham, on Thursday after the retreat. The statement noted that the minister conveyed appreciation to the President for his support.

“The minister expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, affirming that all agencies under the Ministry of Interior are reaping the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” it read.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted progress made under his leadership, particularly in officer promotions. “We have successfully cleared the long-standing backlog of promotions,” he said, pointing out that over 50,000 officers had been promoted in the last two years. He added that future promotions will be guided by a system based on capacity and performance.

In line with the ministry’s goal of enhancing institutions, the minister announced that new training manuals have been developed and that construction of a world-class Fire Academy is underway. According to him, the academy is being designed to compete with leading international institutions, such as the Arizona Fire Academy.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also spoke on mental health support for officers, stressing its importance in workplace productivity. He assured staff of the ministry’s full backing in this area.

He further urged the Federal Fire Service to pursue partnerships with the private sector, explaining that collaboration will improve service delivery, boost infrastructure, and drive modernisation of firefighting operations in Nigeria.

FG HYPREP Empowers Rivers State with Cockle Restoration

Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), yesterday returned to the Bomu Creek to continue the restoration of the bloody cockle culture. He introduced broodstock and spat to the bed in an effort to bring seafood back to the region.

This step builds on earlier efforts by HYPREP to restore the cockle through artificial propagation and restocking. The project is working with the African Regional Aquaculture Centre (ARAC), the University of Port Harcourt and the Rivers State University.

Professor Zabbey said the team is “optimistic about the successful outcome of the laboratory research and the setting up of a complimentary field-based experiment by culturing the cockle broodstock in the wild. This will enable monitoring of their reproductive outputs.”

The culture beds at Bomu Creek have also been seeded with young cockles collected from the wild. Their survival and growth will be monitored to track progress.

According to HYPREP, the method is nature-based, low-tech and ecologically friendly. It is designed to ensure sustainability while reviving seafood production in the area.

The cockle, a bivalve shellfish locally known as koo, once flourished on the tidal flats of Ogoni communities such as Bodo, Bomu, Gbe and Kaa.

For decades, it was a major source of animal protein and income for local people.

However, overharvesting and oil pollution caused the collapse of cockle stocks, leaving the species locally extinct across parts of Ogoni.

Flour Mills of Nigeria expands farming programmes to 450,000 Farmers

Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN) has renewed its pledge to “feeding the nation every day” by strengthening food security in Nigeria and expanding its reach across Africa.

The move is part of the Group’s six-decade strategy of boosting local content and cutting down on imported raw materials.

As Nigeria’s leading pan-African food and agro-allied company, FMN said it will continue to play a key role in agricultural transformation. The company added that its 65 years of commitment to Feeding and Enriching Lives, Every Day, remains strong.

FMN first entered the agricultural sector in 1978 with the acquisition of a 10,000-hectare farm in Kaboji, Niger State.

The investment was designed to add value to the sugar supply chain and reduce the reliance on imported raw materials.

Since then, the company has invested heavily in the local cultivation of crops such as cassava, wheat, maize, soybeans, sugar cane, palm fruits, and sorghum. It has also advanced in storage, aggregation, and distribution of locally sourced grains.

The Group sustains its agenda through investments in food production and yield transformation programmes.

One key initiative is its outgrower programme and agronomy support systems, which have empowered more than 400,000 farmers nationwide.

Through this scheme, smallholder farmers receive resources to grow crops within FMN’s value chain. These crops are later used for the company’s food products, including Golden Penny Foods.

FMN also plans to deepen this programme with better training, stronger market access, and increased support for local production.

Golden Agri Inputs Limited (GAIL), under FMN Agro Limited, has also developed farming schemes for over 50,000 Nigerian farmers.

The schemes provide hybrid seed varieties, modern farming methods, storage solutions, and guaranteed markets for maize, cassava, wheat, sorghum, soybean, and palm kernel.

VCDP empowers 18,000 rice and cassava farmers in Ogun State

The Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) has announced that no fewer than 18,000 rice and cassava farmers in Ogun State have benefited from its intervention.

The disclosure was made by the acting programme coordinator, Abiola Sobunkola, on Wednesday during an inspection tour of project sites in Ijebu North East, Odeda, and Yewa North Local Government Areas.

The VCDP initiative is a federal government programme funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in collaboration with the Ogun State government and farmers’ organisations. It is designed to support smallholder farmers in the rice and cassava value chains, enhancing productivity to promote food security and economic growth.

According to Sobunkola, the inspection was part of efforts to strengthen agricultural value chains across the state. She explained that the tour also aimed to ensure that the facilities provided for farmers were properly maintained and used to their maximum potential.

She added that the programme was structured to boost rice and cassava farming productivity while strengthening every stage of the value chain. Sobunkola noted that support from IFAD and VCDP had helped reduce farmers’ production costs significantly while also improving the availability of food in the state.

The Chairman of Ijebu North East Local Government Area, Foluso Badejo, praised the impact of the programme on local farmers. He described it as a major boost to agricultural development and thanked Governor Dapo Abiodun for his role in promoting food security through partnerships like VCDP.

“The collaboration with VCDP has been very impactful, and we ensure that the facilities provided are put to good use,” Badejo stated.

One of the beneficiaries, Timothy Eweoba, a cassava farmer from Ayetoro in Yewa North, said the intervention had transformed their operations. “We used to process Garri manually, which was stressful and time-consuming, but with the factory provided by VCDP, our processing capacity has greatly improved,” he said.
