Education State of Emergency: Jigawa Recruits Over 10,000 Teachers

0

The Jigawa State Government has declared a state of emergency on education with the unveiling of far-reaching reforms aimed at addressing poor literacy levels and building a stronger learning foundation across the state.

Governor Umar Namadi explained that the decision followed a baseline survey which revealed that eight out of every ten pupils in Primary One could neither read nor write.

“Education is the bedrock of any society. Our findings were alarming, so we had to act fast,” the governor said in an interview with PUNCH.

As part of the reforms, the administration split the Ministry of Education into two departments, Basic Education and Higher Education, to reduce bureaucracy and ensure better management.

To tackle the acute shortage of teachers, Namadi announced that his government confirmed 3,000 of the 4,500 J-Teach temporary staff as permanent and pensionable, recruited another 3,000 new teachers, and employed 4,200 more at the senior secondary level. This brought in more than 10,000 teachers within a few months.

The governor also noted that his administration empowered School-Based Management Committees and introduced Mothers’ Forums to strengthen school monitoring and parental involvement.

He explained that SBMCs are now tracking teacher attendance while mothers ensure children attend classes regularly, a move he said has improved both discipline and learning outcomes.

Jigawa also engaged NewGlobe, a UK-based education consultancy, to support improvements in literacy and numeracy. According to Namadi, the partnership is already producing “remarkable outcomes” in primary schools.

The state further integrated the Almajiri system into formal education by renovating Tsangaya schools and building three mega boarding Tsangaya institutions, each designed to accommodate 1,500 pupils. These schools combine Quranic learning with literacy, numeracy, and vocational training while farming their own food to remain sustainable.

At the higher education level, the government converted the School of Basic Studies in Bamabara into an Institute of Vocational Training equipped with N25 billion worth of modern facilities.

Eight secondary schools were upgraded to vocational excellence centers to produce middle-level manpower, while the State University of Technology was strengthened to provide advanced opportunities for graduates.

On teacher development, Namadi disclosed that more than 7,000 teachers at the basic level and 4,800 at the higher education level have already received training, with continuous programs being implemented through the NewGlobe partnership. About 10,000 teachers are also undergoing competency assessments to guide future training needs.

“Our goal is to build a professional, well-equipped, and motivated teaching workforce,” Namadi said, adding, “We are laying a solid foundation for the future of Jigawa.”

NLC Demands Payment of N-Power Stipends to Beneficiaries

August 26, 2025 – The National Association of N-Power Beneficiaries has released an official statement confirming that its meeting with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) held yesterday (August 25, 2025) was highly successful.

Recall that the executives of NPower beneficiaries earlier announced the meeting with the NLC.

According to the statement, discussions centered on how the NLC, described as the foremost labour organization in Africa, could intensify pressure on the Federal Government to commence the immediate payment of all outstanding NPower stipends owed to beneficiaries.

The leadership of the NLC, during the meeting, pledged to immediately write to the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and the Honourable Minister of Finance, demanding that prompt payments begin without any further delay.

The Congress also resolved to give the Federal Government a specific timeline within which the payment must start.

It warned that if the government fails to act within the period, “appropriate actions will be taken.”

However, it is unclear what the executives refer to as ‘appropriate actions’. Legal actions or NPower protest maybe?

The NLC further encouraged all N-Power beneficiaries to continue applying pressure through every available channel, both online and offline, in order to keep their voices heard.

The Congress assured that concrete steps have already been set in motion to ensure that all unpaid stipends are cleared as quickly as possible.

Present at the meeting were members of the National Administrative Council of the NLC, representatives of NUPENG, PENGASSAN, NUJ, as well as members of the N-Power National Executive Council.

In the statement, the association expressed gratitude to the NLC for its solidarity. “We appreciate the support of the NLC and urge all beneficiaries to remain united and steadfast in this collective struggle,” the association noted.

The release was signed by the Office of the National Publicity Secretary and the Directorate of Strategic Communications of the National Association of N-Power Beneficiaries.

The simple summary of this meeting is that Npower beneficiaries met NLC, and were told to keep pushing for payment. Other than that, nothing MORE.

In the meantime, NPower beneficiaries are urged to remain calm and await official announcements from the FG concerning the payment of owed stipend.

Abia Government to Revive Aba Companies

0

The Abia State Government has announced plans to revitalise four moribund companies in Aba, including the Aba Textile Mills, International Equitable Industries, Afro Beverages, and Star Paper Mills.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the Government House in Umuahia on the outcome of Monday’s Executive Council meeting.

Kanu explained that the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria had approved Abia’s plan to take over Star Paper Mills in Aba. He said the recovery of the company would be followed by its revitalisation alongside others, before selling them to private sector investors.

According to him, “The revitalisation efforts will focus on providing jobs for Abia people and generating revenue for the state. The government will also retain enough shares in the companies when sold to private investors to ensure Abia people are not shortchanged by the managers.”

The commissioner also reported that the Abia Health Insurance Scheme had exceeded its target for 2025, with 103,076 enrollees already registered. He said the achievement showed the people’s trust in the scheme’s ability to meet their healthcare needs.

Kanu added that the commencement of registration for residents in the informal sector would be announced later. He said two new departments had also been created within the Ministry of Health, namely the Abia Drug and Medical Commodities Management Agency and the Department of Nutrition, to address health demands in the state.

On primary healthcare, he noted that 121 Primary Healthcare Centres had been completed under Project Ekwueme. Out of these, 17 PHCs were already functional and providing services, while 33 more were being equipped to commence operations.

He further disclosed that in the third phase of the programme, another 50 PHCs would be brought into operation.

“Abia has about 948 Primary Healthcare Centres, so rehabilitation is being done in batches. Another phase will begin in October,” he said. The commissioner explained that the increase in residents using government health facilities was a sign of growing confidence in the state’s health system. He attributed this to improvements in equipment and personnel across healthcare centres.

Kanu also informed reporters that the Ministry of Environment had commenced house-to-house sanitary inspection services across the 17 local government areas on August 1. The aim, he said, was to encourage good hygiene practices among residents.

“Defaulters will be prosecuted in line with the Abia State Environmental Laws,” he warned.

He further announced that the Executive Council had approved the Abia Health, Safety, and Environment Policy designed to cater to the welfare of civil servants. Kanu stated that the policy would be implemented following Governor Alex Otti’s approval of the proposal.

August 25, 2025 – Information is spreading online concerning the Department of State Services (DSS) screening date that will reportedly take place at different offices in the respective states.

According to the unverified claims, the DSS has commenced sending SMS invitations for screening to shortlisted applicants.

The trending caption reads: “Breaking! DSS has started sending messages to the shortlisted candidates for the exam. Make sure to check your email and SMS because the exam will start tomorrow (August 26, 2025).”

Evidence of the said SMS has been shared on various platforms. However, it is important to note that such messages can easily be doctored.

The best way to be certain is if applicants themselves receive the same SMS and can confirm that it originates from the DSS office in their state.

One of the messages reportedly sent to a candidate in Kano reads: “You are invited for Screening at DSS Kano Office on Wednesday, 27/08/2025, about 8:00am.” The sender name of this text message appeared as ‘DSS KNS’.

Another screenshot circulating online shows a similar invitation that states: “You are invited for DSS screening : 27/08/2025, 7:00 AM at command school, farin gada road Jo’s. Bring original certificates and writing materials.”

If the information turns out to be true, it indicates that the DSS screening date and venue will differ across states. It also shows that each shortlisted candidate will be required to bring their original certificates along with writing materials to the venue.

At this time, the DSS has not issued any official public announcement regarding the matter.

Applicants are therefore urged to remain cautious and to only rely on communication from their respective state offices in order to avoid being misled by scammers.

News update (August 29, 2025:

According to circulating claims, the DSS screening has been postponed to September 6, 2025. However, it is uncertain if this is for all states as there is no official announcement from the DSS office. Candidates are hereby urged to only rely on information from their own state’s office and not rely on social media information.

FG Commissions NADDC Automotive Training Centre in Lagos

0

August 25, 2025 – The Federal Government, through the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), has commissioned a state-of-the-art Automotive Training Centre at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu.

The commissioning ceremony, held on August 25, 2025, brought together key stakeholders from government, academia, and the automotive industry.

Representing the Lagos State Governor, His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mrs. Morenikeji Azeez described the project as a timely initiative aimed at empowering young people and supporting the automotive sector in Nigeria.

She said, “Lagos State has laid great importance on training Lagosians in modern automotive technology. This facility will not only enhance the skills of youths and technicians but also strengthen the automotive industry in Lagos and Nigeria at large. With world-class equipment, our students will now train with the same diagnostic tools and safety systems used globally.”

The Honourable Minister of State for Industry under the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI), Senator John Owan Enoh, explained that the new training centre is part of the Federal Government’s broader Automotive Policy.

According to him, the policy is designed to promote job creation, skills acquisition, technology transfer, and GDP growth. He added that it also aims to boost local vehicle production, achieve 40 percent local content, and ensure that 30 percent of vehicles produced in Nigeria are electric, with the target of creating one million jobs.

Highlighting the importance of decentralisation, Senator Enoh disclosed that the Lagos Automotive Training Centre is one of 23 such facilities strategically located across the country to guarantee equitable distribution of national assets.

Also speaking at the event, the NADDC Board Chairman, His Eminence Chief Emma Eneukwu, OFR, hailed the commissioning as a landmark achievement.

He described the facility as “a beacon of opportunity,” stressing its importance in training, research, and vehicle maintenance.

He further noted that the centre would prepare Nigerian students for emerging technologies, including Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversions, which are increasingly shaping global transportation.

In his remarks, the NADDC Director-General, Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, reaffirmed the Council’s mandate to drive sustainable growth in Nigeria’s automotive sector through targeted investments in skills development and infrastructure.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the new Automotive Policy, noting that the initiative was made possible under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Mr. Osanipin disclosed that the NADDC is currently constructing 23 training centres across the six geopolitical zones to expand opportunities for young Nigerians, promote innovation, and support local automotive value chains.

He further explained that Lagos was a strategic choice for the training facility due to its position as Nigeria’s commercial hub and a centre of innovation, trade, and entrepreneurship.

Ikorodu’s strong industrial clusters and vibrant micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) were also highlighted as major enablers of the project.

The commissioning of the NADDC Automotive Training Centre at LASUSTECH is seen as more than an infrastructure milestone.

It represents a collaborative effort between government, academia, and industry to prepare Nigeria for the future of mobility, address unemployment, and strengthen national development.
