FAAN Resumes Direct Cargo Revenue Collection at Lagos Airport

0

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced a major milestone with the resumption of direct revenue collection at the cargo terminals of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, after a 15-year break.

For the first time in more than a decade, officials from FAAN’s Directorate of Cargo Development and Services (DCDS) are now positioned at the cargo release points of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) warehouses. Their role is to supervise and ensure real-time collection of cargo charges.

FAAN stated that the development comes after months of stakeholder engagement. According to Mr. Lekan Thomas, Director of Cargo Development and Services, and Mr. Olatokubo Arewa, Airport Manager, the move is designed to improve accountability in the cargo sector.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, also held a high-level meeting with the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, which gave the initiative strong backing.

FAAN is working closely with the PTC Customs Area Command, led by Comptroller T. Awe, to strengthen efficiency. “This initiative will plug revenue leakages and improve transparency in the air cargo value chain,” a FAAN representative explained.

Industry stakeholders believe this achievement will have a positive impact on aviation business growth, cargo handling operations, and customs revenue generation. The development also highlights FAAN’s focus on operational efficiency, inter-agency collaboration, and boosting ease of doing business in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Officials confirmed that the breakthrough at MMIA will serve as a model for replication in other airports nationwide. FAAN noted that this strategy is part of its vision to optimise air cargo operations, attract more logistics investment, and unlock new revenue streams within the Nigerian economy.

Afreximbank and Lagos State Empower 253 SMEs

0

Afreximbank (Africa Export Import Bank) and the Lagos State Government have officially celebrated the Graduation and Closing Ceremony of the Afreximbank / Lagos State Export Readiness Training Programme.

The event marked a key milestone for 253 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Lagos, now equipped with knowledge and tools to expand into regional and global markets.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from Afreximbank, including Mr. Alain-Thierry Mbongue Ebollo, Regional Chief Operating Officer, and Mr. Ody Akhanoba, Director of SME Development, alongside Hon. Folashade Bada Ambrose-Medebem, Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Lagos State. The partnership reaffirmed the shared goal of empowering African businesses with finance, skills, and market access.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Mbongue called on the graduates to embrace opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He stated, “You are more than just graduates today. You are ambassadors of African enterprise. You are job creators. You are innovators. You are the industrial champions who will help move our continent from an exporter of raw materials to a producer of finished goods and world-class brands.”

He encouraged the SMEs to carry confidence and responsibility into their journey, saying, “Made in Africa must become a global mark of quality and pride.”

In addition to the graduation, Lagos State announced that 20 outstanding SMEs will be showcased at the upcoming Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025) in Algiers. This initiative underscores the importance of connecting businesses to international trade opportunities.

Afreximbank emphasized its long-term support for entrepreneurs, noting that SMEs remain the backbone of Africa’s economic growth. “At Afreximbank, we stand firmly with SMEs, the engine of Africa’s future growth and will continue to provide the platforms, tools, and financing they need to thrive,” the bank stated.

AgDEG Onboards 26 MSMEs in Kaduna State

AgDEG (Agriculture Development for Economic Growth) expanded its operations to Kaduna State, onboarding 26 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to deliver private extension advisory services.

The initiative is expected to impact over 1.3 million farming households in the state, creating new opportunities for agribusiness growth, food security, and sustainable agriculture.

The sensitization meeting, held in Kaduna city, brought together 26 agro MSMEs from 11 Local Government Areas. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as these businesses partnered with AgDEG to enhance access to agricultural extension services. With agriculture remaining one of the highest contributors to Nigeria’s GDP, the program aims to strengthen agribusiness investment, farming innovations, and agricultural productivity.

AgDEG’s expansion follows its success in Benue State, widely known as the Food Basket of the Nation. The organization’s track record there has positioned it as a key driver of agricultural development and agritech solutions. By extending its reach to Kaduna, AgDEG is signaling a strong commitment to advancing food production and rural development.

For Timothy Tanko, CEO of Tim Tank Prime Int Farms, this collaboration is both timely and inspiring. He said, “We felt like orphans when the USAID funded FtF AEAS closed abruptly despite the huge impact it made on us, but we are grateful to God that AgDEG has filled us with renewed hopes. We are excited to partner with AgDEG as a homegrown organization that will never leave us feeling like orphans.”

The management of the Kaduna State Agricultural Development Authority (KADA) was also acknowledged for its role in supporting this initiative. Together with MSME partners, AgDEG is determined to transform farming practices, boost agribusiness financing, and empower smallholder farmers across Kaduna State.

The mission is urgent, and stakeholders are optimistic that AgDEG’s expansion will play a vital role in revolutionizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Edo State Meets on Federal TVET Industrial Mapping Initiative

0

The Edo State Government, through the Board for Technical and Vocational Education (BTVE), has hosted a stakeholders’ meeting on the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) industrial mapping initiative as part of efforts to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education in Edo State.

The meeting, which was held at the conference room of the Board, brought together representatives of industries, service providers, development partners, artisan groups and professional associations across the State. It also had in attendance Board Members from the three senatorial districts with the Acting Board Secretary.

In her opening remark, the Executive Chairman of BTVE, Barr. (Mrs.) Onomen Briggs, described the engagement as an important step toward aligning training institutions with the evolving needs of industries. She stated that the industrial mapping exercise would act as a compass to identify skill gaps, strengthen partnerships and ensure that Technical Colleges produce graduates who are employable and industry-ready.

Briggs appreciated the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for what she described as his visionary leadership and commitment to improving the quality of education. She also commended the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, for his dedication and impactful contributions to the sector.

According to her, “The BTVE remains committed to fostering collaboration between Government, the Private Sector and development partners to position TVET as a strong driver of economic growth and youth empowerment.”

She further explained that the Federal Government’s initiative is structured into monthly sessions that are accessible through an application system. Beneficiaries, she noted, will be required to report to designated training centres rather than conventional schools. She also pointed out the uniqueness of Edo State and stressed the need to engage stakeholders and carry out facility inspections to better position artisans and small-scale industries in a way that allows them benefit from the programme during Federal-level policy dialogues.

During the deliberations, Edo North Board Member, Engr. Abdul Muhammed, called on artisan groups to spread the information to their members across the State. He emphasized that the initiative was not limited to Technical Colleges. Other stakeholders highlighted the importance of sensitizing traditional rulers and community leaders to ensure the programme reaches every part of Edo State.

A representative of GIZ, Modupe Akinwale, urged the Board to make the eligibility criteria and requirements public so that artisans and small-scale industries can adequately prepare before submitting their applications.

The initiative covers a wide range of vocational areas. These include bricklaying and block laying, carpentry and joinery, plumbing and pipe fitting, computer and GSM maintenance, refrigerator and air conditioning works, auto body works, catering and craft practice, robotics engineering craft, beauty therapy and cosmetology, creative content creation, electronics system maintenance, industrial mechanics, networking and system security, social media communication and animation.

The meeting ended with a collective commitment from all stakeholders to work together in shaping a sustainable future for skills development and industrial growth in Edo State.

Those present at the meeting included representatives of the Nigeria Association of Small-Scale Industrialists, Benin Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Nigeria Association of Hair Stylists, Barbers and Cosmetology, Artisans Development and Networking Organization, Genius Hub, Technology and Incubation Hub, Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria, Artisans Board of Edo State and the National Leather Association of Nigeria.

Skills to Wealth (S2W) Program Training Ongoing in 6 Geopolitical Zones

The FG Skills to Wealth (S2W) program is currently training participants across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones as reported by multiple sources. Officials say the initiative is designed to provide financial empowerment and create opportunities for young people to build sustainable businesses.

After six months of training, successful graduates will be eligible for low-interest credit facilities ranging from ₦300,000 to ₦400,000. This will help them start businesses, purchase equipment, or expand their vocational practice.

The S2W initiative aims to arm young Nigerians with practical skill sets that enable them to participate productively in the economy.

As part of the pilot phase, 27 participants per state were selected to undergo training in agriculture, automobile technology, and renewable energy.

Program coordinators explained that the plan targets 1.5 million youth by 2027, with a wider ambition to reach 10 million beneficiaries within one year, making it one of the largest youth empowerment schemes in the country.

FG Releases N1.5bn to Support 500,000 Ginger Farmers

The Federal Government has approved a total of N1.5 billion to support ginger farmers across the country, reports thegazellenews.com. This announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Chief Sunday Dare, during an interview on Channels Television programme, Sunrise Daily.

Chief Dare explained that about 500,000 young farmers are set to benefit from this agricultural fund. According to him, the initiative will help improve production and create more opportunities for youth in agribusiness.

This support for ginger farming is expected to boost food security, promote agribusiness financing, and contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Speaking further on government policies, Chief Dare highlighted how the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has reduced the cost of kidney dialysis from N50,000 to N12,000, describing it as a 75 percent reduction. He noted that this step will provide affordable healthcare access for many Nigerians who struggle with high medical expenses.

He also revealed that the government has introduced free Caesarean Section services for pregnant women as part of social safety nets. “The concept of social safety net is trying to subsidize some of the basic things Nigerians deal with daily,” he stated.

“We all agreed that these need to be scaled up absolutely and it’s obvious that the President is committed to doing that,” Chief Dare added.
