FG, Imo State, USMAC Launch Nationwide Startup Mentoring Programme

Nigeria’s innovation industry is receiving a major push as the Imo State Government, in partnership with the United States Market Access Center (US.MAC), has launched a nationwide mentoring programme to strengthen startups and entrepreneurs.

The initiative, modeled after Silicon Valley-style hackathons, is aimed at empowering Nigerian entrepreneurs to build globally competitive companies, create jobs, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

Speaking at the project’s pre-launch in Abuja, the Special Assistant to the President on ICT Development and Digital Innovation, Mr. Doko Inuita, represented by his Technical Adviser on ICT and Administration, Mr. Amukoyo Onome, described the programme as a strategic move for national development.

“This programme gives Nigerians the opportunity to start as micro and small enterprises and scale into full companies that can operate not only within Nigeria but also globally. Investors from Silicon Valley are already on ground, which will build confidence, attract foreign direct investment and prepare our startups to compete internationally,” he said.

The Co-founder of the Global Innovation Dojo, Donohue, stressed that Nigeria has the talent required to produce billion-dollar technology companies.

According to him, the project is designed to identify entrepreneurs with resilience and capacity to scale into high-growth ventures. He further revealed that the Imo State Government has set up a digital hub to serve as an accelerator, with national data protection frameworks already in place to safeguard intellectual property and sensitive data.

“When just a handful of founders succeed, the impact spreads across society. What is missing is experienced mentors who have built and sold global companies. This project aims to bridge that gap by linking Nigerian startups with successful international founders,” he explained.

USMAC’s Africa representative, Matt Ifese, outlined the programme’s structure, which will begin with outreach events and a curated hackathon in October.

He added that the hackathon would lead to a boot camp where the most promising startups will be shortlisted for international exposure. “We expect up to 2,000 applications, but only 100 startups will make the cut. From there, the best candidates will advance to training and international exposure,” he said.

Mr. Ifese also highlighted Nigeria’s growing digital economy as a major attraction for global investors. He noted that the programme is expected to bring in venture capital, boost the country’s revenue base, and enhance Nigeria’s visibility in the global innovation ecosystem.

FG Launches WAVE Programme to Empower Women in Agriculture

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Nigerian women through agriculture with the launch of the Women’s Agro Value Expansion (WAVE) Programme by the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.

In a statement signed by Anthony Agurue, Assistant Chief Information Officer of the Ministry, the Minister disclosed the initiative during the Renewed Hope – Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (RH-GEEP) Roundtable Meeting held in Abuja.

She commended the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), the GEEP team, and other stakeholders for their dedication to promoting inclusion and empowerment.

According to her, “Women’s empowerment remains central to nation-building. When a woman is empowered, her entire family, community, and by extension, the nation, benefit through improved health, nutrition, and education outcomes.”

The Minister highlighted that women make up nearly 70 percent of Nigeria’s agricultural workforce. Despite this, she noted that they face barriers to value addition, market access, and decision-making roles, even though their contributions to food security are vital.

She explained that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the WAVE Programme is designed to support women’s transition from farmgate operators to agri-preneurs and value creators.

The initiative will combine access to finance, skills development, market linkages, agribusiness support, mechanization, and storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses. These steps are aimed at improving productivity and enabling women to take advantage of opportunities in both local and international markets.

According to Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the programme will also strengthen women’s roles within agri-food systems while positioning them to contribute more significantly to feeding the nation. She emphasized that financial inclusion, as promoted by RH-GEEP, must align with skills development and enterprise support for lasting impact.

She stated, “With the right access, opportunities, and partnerships, millions of Nigerian women can move from subsistence to prosperity and make significant contributions to the ₦1 trillion economy targeted under the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

FG Launches BisonFly Project to Save N24bn Annually on Official Air Travel

0

The Federal Government has introduced the BisonFly project, a new initiative aimed at saving Nigeria up to N24 billion annually in official air travel expenses.

The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement released by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mohammed Manga.

According to the statement, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, explained that the initiative would reduce government overheads by centralising bookings and securing discounted airfares. Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Raymond Omachi, the Minister charged the project team to ensure timely implementation, describing the project as critical to the government’s fiscal reforms.

“The BisonFly project directly supports our commitment to prudent financial management. By coordinating travel and securing discounted rates, we are using the government’s collective bargaining power to cut expenditure and improve service delivery, just as global institutions like the World Bank have done successfully,” the statement quoted him as saying.

The ministry highlighted that the project is expected to deliver between N18 billion and N24 billion in annual savings from discounted airfares across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. It noted that the initiative would significantly reduce the overhead cost of official air travel across the Federal Civil Service.

The move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the administration’s wider fiscal and tax reforms. The statement further described the BisonFly project as a strategic effort by the Ministry of Finance to manage official travel through a centralised, technology-enabled system.

By integrating digital booking tools and a unified platform, the government stated that the project would promote transparency, improve efficiency, and optimise costs in the public service.

The ministry added that successful implementation would embed fiscal discipline and responsible financial management across the Federal Civil Service.

It further stressed that the project would not only save funds but also enhance efficiency in service delivery, boost economic growth, create employment opportunities, and improve productivity within the public sector.

August 21, 2025 – The Katsina State Government has launched a large-scale teacher training programme for 18,000 teachers and commenced the distribution of 20,000 tablets to improve teaching quality across the state.

The initiative was officially flagged off by Acting Governor Malam Faruq Lawal Jobe at the Local Government Service Commission Conference Hall, Kaita Road.

“These are not just statistics but a strategic investment in the future of our children. By equipping teachers with modern tools and necessary training, we are aligning our educational system with global standards to prepare our students for 21st-century competitiveness,” Jobe stated.

The training and tablet distribution are part of a broader education reform agenda aimed at raising standards in schools.

Other measures under the reform include the distribution of 30,000 uniforms to underprivileged children and the installation of CCTV cameras in 130 schools to strengthen security. These efforts are positioned as key strategies to modernize the education sector and ensure quality learning environments.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Zainab Musa Musawa, described the programme as “a significant milestone” in restoring educational excellence in Katsina State. She added that each teacher would receive a tablet preloaded with lesson plans and digital teaching resources designed to enhance classroom delivery and digital learning.

Chairperson of the Katsina State Teachers’ Association, Hajiya Rakiya Shehu, commended the government for its commitment to education and urged all stakeholders to ensure the initiative achieves its goals.

The government has also provided 70 motorcycles to school monitoring officers to enhance supervision, especially in rural communities, and distributed specialised teaching aids for schools supporting blind and deaf students.

These combined actions reflect the administration’s determination to strengthen the education system and provide inclusive learning opportunities for all children.

No Deadline Extensions for 2026 Hajj Visa, Payments, or Contracts – NAHCON

0

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has urged all stakeholders to strictly adhere to the timelines set by Saudi Arabian authorities for the 2026 Hajj operations, stressing that there will be no deadline extensions for visa processing, payments, or contractual agreements.

This was the key message at the post-Hajj stakeholders’ meeting with Licensed Tour Operator Companies, which took place at the Hajj House, Abuja.

The meeting was chaired by the NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, along with the Commissioner of Operations, Prince Anofiu Elegushi, and the Commissioner of Policy, Personnel, Management and Finance, Prince Aliu AbdulRazaq.

In his remarks, Professor Usman expressed his gratitude to the State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards, private tour operators, and service providers for their roles in ensuring the success of the 2025 Hajj operations.

He further recognized the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which, according to him, enabled Nigerian pilgrims to perform the holy pilgrimage with dignity, comfort, and peace of mind.

“The Commission is committed to collaboration, fairness, and transparency,” Professor Usman said. “But at the same time, we expect total compliance from all stakeholders as we work together to improve service delivery and meet global best practices.”

Speaking on the operational guidelines for the 2026 Hajj, Commissioner of Operations, Prince Anofiu Elegushi, cautioned stakeholders to strictly follow the official Saudi Hajj calendar and avoid last-minute delays. He made it clear that the Saudi authorities will not entertain deadline extensions under any circumstances.

“The Saudis have made it very clear — the dates on their calendar will not be extended by even a minute,” Prince Elegushi stated. “Gone are the days when you could beg for extra weeks to process visas. For 2026, if the portal closes today, it closes today.”

He reminded stakeholders about the 2025 experience, where many participants believed that extensions would be granted, only to miss important deadlines and lose participation slots. He also pointed to the unexpected challenges faced during Arafat 2025, describing them as valuable lessons for the upcoming season.

“What happened in 2025 has given us insight and direction,” he explained. “We must learn from it, plan better, and work faster. The Saudi system has changed, and we must adapt quickly.”

On financial matters, Commissioner of Policy, Personnel, Management and Finance, Prince Aliu AbdulRazaq, briefed attendees on refunds, pending complaints, and payment processes.

He emphasized the importance of early and timely payments by licensed tour operators for all Hajj-related obligations, noting that the Saudi authorities will not grant extra time for contractual agreements or visa processing in 2026.

Similarly, the Commissioner of Planning, Research, Statistics, Information and Library Services, Professor Abubakar Yagawal, praised tour operators for their contributions to the success of the 2025 pilgrimage. He called for continued cooperation with NAHCON and urged all stakeholders to ensure early payment and planning for a smoother 2026 Hajj experience for Nigerian pilgrims.

The meeting ended with a vote of thanks from the Director of Inspectorate and Compliance, Alhaji Alidu Shutti, who described the session as one of the most productive engagements between NAHCON management and licensed tour operators in recent times.

He commended the leadership of the Commission for approving and coordinating the meeting, which he said was key in preparing Nigeria for the 2026 Hajj operations.

NELFUND clarifies upkeep loan disbursement, application process

0

Abuja, Nigeria, August 21, 2025 – The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has responded to public concerns following its recent update on upkeep loan disbursement.

The agency explained that the decision to align upkeep payments strictly with academic sessions was taken to ensure fairness and transparency.

According to NELFUND, two main reasons informed this policy.

1. First, Nigeria’s tertiary institutions do not operate under a harmonised academic calendar, making it necessary to align disbursements with each school’s schedule.
2. Second, the move is to “avoid the risk of duplicate upkeep payments to the same student within the same institution but different academic sessions.”

The agency stated that this approach will ensure proper management of upkeep payments while reflecting the realities of academic timetables across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

On the issue of loan application rejections, NELFUND explained that such outcomes may occur at different stages.

At the initial application stage, students may be rejected due to incomplete or unclear documentation, incorrect account details, or mismatched names across official records.

At the institutional verification stage, rejection may happen if the applicant’s school has not verified or has declined to approve details for its own reasons.

“All rejection reasons are clearly stated on each applicant’s dashboard for transparency,” the agency said.

Furthermore, at the upkeep application stage, rejections may also occur if the academic session being applied for has already closed.

In this case, students are advised to reapply under the new academic session or resolve the issues flagged in order to access both institutional charges and upkeep for that year.

NELFUND reassured the public that “no eligible applicant will be denied access to the loan scheme, provided applications are submitted with accurate documentation and within the relevant academic session.”
