No Deadline Extensions for 2026 Hajj Visa, Payments, or Contracts – NAHCON

0

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has urged all stakeholders to strictly adhere to the timelines set by Saudi Arabian authorities for the 2026 Hajj operations, stressing that there will be no deadline extensions for visa processing, payments, or contractual agreements.

This was the key message at the post-Hajj stakeholders’ meeting with Licensed Tour Operator Companies, which took place at the Hajj House, Abuja.

The meeting was chaired by the NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, along with the Commissioner of Operations, Prince Anofiu Elegushi, and the Commissioner of Policy, Personnel, Management and Finance, Prince Aliu AbdulRazaq.

In his remarks, Professor Usman expressed his gratitude to the State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards, private tour operators, and service providers for their roles in ensuring the success of the 2025 Hajj operations.

He further recognized the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which, according to him, enabled Nigerian pilgrims to perform the holy pilgrimage with dignity, comfort, and peace of mind.

“The Commission is committed to collaboration, fairness, and transparency,” Professor Usman said. “But at the same time, we expect total compliance from all stakeholders as we work together to improve service delivery and meet global best practices.”

Speaking on the operational guidelines for the 2026 Hajj, Commissioner of Operations, Prince Anofiu Elegushi, cautioned stakeholders to strictly follow the official Saudi Hajj calendar and avoid last-minute delays. He made it clear that the Saudi authorities will not entertain deadline extensions under any circumstances.

“The Saudis have made it very clear — the dates on their calendar will not be extended by even a minute,” Prince Elegushi stated. “Gone are the days when you could beg for extra weeks to process visas. For 2026, if the portal closes today, it closes today.”

He reminded stakeholders about the 2025 experience, where many participants believed that extensions would be granted, only to miss important deadlines and lose participation slots. He also pointed to the unexpected challenges faced during Arafat 2025, describing them as valuable lessons for the upcoming season.

“What happened in 2025 has given us insight and direction,” he explained. “We must learn from it, plan better, and work faster. The Saudi system has changed, and we must adapt quickly.”

On financial matters, Commissioner of Policy, Personnel, Management and Finance, Prince Aliu AbdulRazaq, briefed attendees on refunds, pending complaints, and payment processes.

He emphasized the importance of early and timely payments by licensed tour operators for all Hajj-related obligations, noting that the Saudi authorities will not grant extra time for contractual agreements or visa processing in 2026.

Similarly, the Commissioner of Planning, Research, Statistics, Information and Library Services, Professor Abubakar Yagawal, praised tour operators for their contributions to the success of the 2025 pilgrimage. He called for continued cooperation with NAHCON and urged all stakeholders to ensure early payment and planning for a smoother 2026 Hajj experience for Nigerian pilgrims.

The meeting ended with a vote of thanks from the Director of Inspectorate and Compliance, Alhaji Alidu Shutti, who described the session as one of the most productive engagements between NAHCON management and licensed tour operators in recent times.

He commended the leadership of the Commission for approving and coordinating the meeting, which he said was key in preparing Nigeria for the 2026 Hajj operations.

NELFUND clarifies upkeep loan disbursement, application process

0

Abuja, Nigeria, August 21, 2025 – The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has responded to public concerns following its recent update on upkeep loan disbursement.

The agency explained that the decision to align upkeep payments strictly with academic sessions was taken to ensure fairness and transparency.

According to NELFUND, two main reasons informed this policy.

1. First, Nigeria’s tertiary institutions do not operate under a harmonised academic calendar, making it necessary to align disbursements with each school’s schedule.
2. Second, the move is to “avoid the risk of duplicate upkeep payments to the same student within the same institution but different academic sessions.”

The agency stated that this approach will ensure proper management of upkeep payments while reflecting the realities of academic timetables across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

On the issue of loan application rejections, NELFUND explained that such outcomes may occur at different stages.

At the initial application stage, students may be rejected due to incomplete or unclear documentation, incorrect account details, or mismatched names across official records.

At the institutional verification stage, rejection may happen if the applicant’s school has not verified or has declined to approve details for its own reasons.

“All rejection reasons are clearly stated on each applicant’s dashboard for transparency,” the agency said.

Furthermore, at the upkeep application stage, rejections may also occur if the academic session being applied for has already closed.

In this case, students are advised to reapply under the new academic session or resolve the issues flagged in order to access both institutional charges and upkeep for that year.

NELFUND reassured the public that “no eligible applicant will be denied access to the loan scheme, provided applications are submitted with accurate documentation and within the relevant academic session.”

Nigeria Gets Official Hometown in Japan as JICA Backs Kisarazu

0

Yokohama, Japan – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has designated Kisarazu City in Chiba Prefecture as Nigeria’s official hometown in Japan.

This announcement was made at the ongoing Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), where JICA outlined new initiatives to deepen cooperation between Japan and African nations.

The hometown partnership aims to boost cultural, technical, and developmental collaboration by pairing African countries with Japanese cities that already have ties. As part of the arrangement, Nigeria was linked to Kisarazu, while Tanzania was connected to Nagai in Yamagata Prefecture, Ghana to Sanjo in Niigata Prefecture, and Mozambique to Imabari in Ehime Prefecture.

According to JICA, Kisarazu is a rapidly growing maritime and industrial hub near Tokyo that provides Nigeria with opportunities for technology transfer, maritime expertise, skills exchange, and industrial investment.

Officials say this partnership highlights Nigeria’s role in Africa’s growth story and Japan’s recognition of Nigeria’s youth-driven potential as a key driver of global development.

“Nigeria’s partnership with Kisarazu is an important step in strengthening bilateral relations and expanding opportunities for trade and innovation,” a Nigerian embassy representative in Tokyo stated. The embassy delegation is scheduled to meet with the Mayor of Kisarazu and Japanese officials this week to begin operationalising the relationship.

The Federal Government described the move as a milestone under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying it will help diversify partnerships, create economic opportunities, and strengthen Nigeria’s global influence through enhanced people-to-people connections.

FG, SEC Partnership to Empower Nigerian Youth as Entrepreneurs, Investors

0

August 21, 2025 – The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to practical and innovative solutions that will deliver real impact in the lives of young Nigerians.

This came as the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), led by its Director-General, Dr. Emomotimi Agama.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Comrade Olawande stressed that meaningful legacies are built through action and collaboration rather than bureaucracy. He explained that the new initiative is focused on creating access for Nigerian youth to participate in the capital market.

“This initiative is about breaking barriers and opening doors,” Olawande said. “For too long, the capital market has been seen as a space reserved for the wealthy. Today, we are saying clearly that Nigerian youth deserve access too. We want to empower them not just to seek jobs, but to create them, to become entrepreneurs, investors, and employers of labour.”

The Minister also highlighted the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA) as a central platform designed to provide financial education and practical skills to young people across the country, regardless of background or location.

He emphasized the importance of strong collaboration between government agencies and private sector players to ensure that no youth is excluded from opportunities.

“Our goal is to raise a generation of financially savvy, empowered young Nigerians who will shape the future prosperity of this nation. With partners like the SEC, we are proving that it is possible,” Olawande stated.

He expressed gratitude to the SEC for its leadership role in this initiative and urged other stakeholders to contribute to building pathways of opportunity for young Nigerians.

“This is about the future of our country. Together, we can ensure that every young Nigerian has the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to thrive,” he added.

On his part, the Director-General of the SEC, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, described the collaboration as a strategic move toward youth empowerment through financial inclusion and innovation.

He commended the Honourable Minister for his youthful and action-driven leadership, noting his ability to dismantle bureaucratic barriers in favor of impactful solutions.

Dr. Agama further affirmed the SEC’s dedication to working with the Ministry to expand access to funding, financial education, and investment opportunities.

According to him, the partnership will serve as the foundation of a meaningful legacy, with programs targeted at empowering young Nigerians from all walks of life, thereby ensuring sustainable socio-economic growth and long-term national prosperity.

FG, Kano to Create 40,000 Jobs with End-of-Life Vehicle Regulations

0

August 21, 2025 – The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), under the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, has reaffirmed its commitment to repositioning Nigeria’s automotive sector with the successful hosting of a Sensitisation and Advocacy Programme on End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Regulations at Hilton Palace Hotel, Kano State, on August 21, 2025.

Representing the Director General of NADDC, Mr. Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, the Council’s Director of Policy, Planning and Statistics, Mr. Musa M. Sani, said the initiative would transform the automotive sector while advancing economic growth.

“The ELV Regulation is more than just waste management; it is a strategic blueprint for economic diversification, environmental protection and industrial renewal,” he stated.

According to Mr. Sani, the policy is expected to create over 40,000 direct and indirect jobs nationwide, promote recycling, and support the development of greener cities across Nigeria. He also recalled the official launch of the ELV Regulations by the Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Owan Enoh, on March 5, 2025.

He noted that the sensitisation in Kano followed an earlier programme held in Abuja on July 3, 2025, which provided the foundation for collaboration among stakeholders in the automotive and environmental sectors.

The NADDC also announced plans to set up a multi-stakeholder Steering Committee made up of government agencies, industry professionals, and environmental organizations.

The committee will be responsible for guiding the implementation of the ELV policy, which is being modeled after international standards from countries such as Japan and the Netherlands.

Through his representative, the Director General expressed appreciation to Senator John Owan Enoh for leading the regulation’s adoption and to Hon. Terseer Ugbor for strengthening the legal framework to support environmental sustainability and automotive reforms.

Delivering a keynote address, Dr. Fyneray Mbata, Managing Director of the Recycling and Environmental Development Initiative of Nigeria (REDIN), and representative of Hon. Terseer Ugbor, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, described the ELV policy as a pathway to a circular economy.

“This initiative will reduce pollution, attract private investment, generate revenue, and create thousands of job opportunities across Nigeria,” Dr. Mbata explained.

REDIN, which has been selected as a recycling partner for the regulation, pledged to work with NADDC, relevant government institutions, and private stakeholders to create a sustainable system for ELV collection, dismantling, and recycling.

The programme concluded with goodwill messages from stakeholders who promised continuous collaboration to ensure the ELV Regulations achieve their goals of job creation, safer mobility, environmental protection, and industrial growth.
