Nasarawa State Set to Partner 9ia Food Fiesta to Train 2,000 Youths

The Nasarawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports has expressed readiness to welcome value-added partnerships that focus on youth empowerment, skills training, and entrepreneurship development. This was made known during the visit of 9ia Food Fiesta, Abuja, to the ministry.

The team from 9ia Food Fiesta proposed to train at least two thousand youths in Nasarawa State, including two hundred persons with special needs, through a structured programme designed to provide skills training and an empowerment scheme.

According to the organisation, the initiative will also provide necessary equipment to help beneficiaries establish their own small businesses, creating pathways for self-reliance and economic growth.

The visit was facilitated by Comrade Akashe Abdullahi Ari, Aide to Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State on Youth Development. Speaking on the objectives of the project, representatives of 9ja Food Fiesta said, “We commended the state government for its continuous efforts in engaging and empowering its youth population. However, we also noted that with the state’s growing population, no single effort is enough. That is why 9ja Food Fiesta, backed by experienced tutors, dedicated volunteers, and a tested platform, seeks the ministry’s permission and partnership to deliver on what we do best, empowering lives through skills.”

The group further stressed the importance of targeting women and young people. “We have identified the hidden potential within the youths and women of Nasarawa State, and we are here to ignite it with the right skills, relevant information, and opportunities to thrive,” the statement added.

This initiative aligns with the state’s wider commitment to youth development, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic empowerment.

He assured that the Ministry would implement these measures immediately with a focus on transparency and accountability.

Abia OOPA Secures N2bn TETFund Grant to Launch Osisioma Campus, Otti Confirms

Abia State-owned Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba (OOPA), has secured a N2 billion TETFund High Impact Grant to speed up development works at its new Main Campus in Osisioma, on the outskirts of Aba metropolis.

Governor Alex Otti, while speaking during his August Media Chat with journalists, said the fund would fast-track the institution’s readiness to begin academic operations from the next session.

The Polytechnic, established over 30 years ago by the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, pioneer civilian governor of Abia State and former Minister of Science and Technology, has been running from a temporary campus within Aba.

The governor explained that OOPA was the only polytechnic in the South East zone among 17 institutions nationwide to benefit from the TETFund High Impact Grant.

Governor Otti commended the Rector, Dr. Christopher Okoro, and the school management, for the efforts that qualified the institution to receive the grant.

He said, “The N2 billion grant will facilitate not only the development of the Osisioma Main Campus, where lecture theatres, hostels, laboratories, and other buildings are already ongoing, but also support the expansion and upgrading of existing facilities at both campuses.”

The governor added that the grant would drive academic reforms to align the Polytechnic with global educational trends. According to him, “We will see the introduction of contemporary courses like Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, among others, to ensure our students gain skills relevant to today’s job market.”

Beyond tertiary education, Otti highlighted broader reforms in the state’s education sector. He announced that 20 primary Smart Schools are under construction, while 221 primary and secondary schools are undergoing rehabilitation as part of a comprehensive upgrade programme.

He further revealed that N14.43 billion has been spent on renovating 61 schools this year alone.

In addition, the governor disclosed that 5,394 newly recruited teachers have been deployed across the state to schools of their choice to ensure maximum service delivery. He stressed that the aim is to improve the quality of teaching and learning across all levels.

Providing updates in other sectors, Otti reported progress in Healthcare, Infrastructure, and Youth Empowerment. He noted that under his ‘Project Ekwueme,’ 120 Primary Healthcare Centres have already been rehabilitated out of the targeted 200, with upgrades ongoing in General Hospitals.

He explained that these upgrades include the provision of residential accommodation for staff to improve efficiency and quality of service.

The governor also approved the recruitment of 771 healthcare professionals to boost manpower in the system. According to him, 101,000 people have so far enrolled in the State Health Insurance Scheme, which he said would help expand access to affordable healthcare for residents.

40,000 Artisans in Training as ITF DG Denies Relocation from Jos

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has denied reports suggesting that its headquarters is being moved from Jos, Plateau State, to another part of Nigeria. The clarification came after a motion was raised in the Plateau State House of Assembly alleging such plans.

Responding to the claim, the Director General and Chief Executive of the ITF, Dr. Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun, assured the people of Plateau that the organization remains fully rooted in Jos.

“You see, ITF is in the heart of every Plateau citizen. They love ITF and we love them. This is just a tiny thing that will not crush the love we have for them and the love they have for us. No matter how they pinch, it will not hurt the relationship between ITF and the good people of Plateau State,” he stated.

Dr. Ogun, who assumed office in October 2023, also highlighted the tasks given to him by President Bola Tinubu, particularly the directive to upgrade Nigerian artisans to international standards.

“When I came in in October 2023, I barely spent a week in office when the president sent a message. He gave me my task. One of the biggest tasks we were given is to upscale Nigeria artisans to international standards. And that’s a super project: Super skill-up artisan program,” he said.

According to him, the president had expressed concern that many Nigerian artisans were unable to carry out simple jobs neatly, such as tiling, plumbing, and plaster of Paris work, while artisans from neighboring countries often came into Nigeria to take these opportunities.

“There are jobs, but are we doing them well? He gave us the task to scale up Nigeria artisans to international standards. And we embarked on this and we are moving,” Dr. Ogun explained.

The ITF boss disclosed that about 40,000 artisans are currently in training under the program. Last year, 29,000 foundation-level artisans completed their training, and another 71,000 practicing artisans have since been added to the program. However, he noted that the lack of adequate training centers that meet international standards has forced the Fund to batch the training process.

He explained that the program goes beyond technical training and also focuses on essential skills such as project management. “For the first time in the history of Nigeria, we are going to have artisans as a member of Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria. The Chartered Institute have developed their curriculum, both for the trained trainer and for the artisans. Because to fix a button on your clothes is a project. You have to use the principle of project management. If we use this principle, we will do it rightly,” he said.

Dr. Ogun further stressed the importance of industrial safety, professional ethics, and patriotism in the training modules.

He pointed out that artisans will be taught to recognize workplace hazards such as exposed wires, water spills, and fire risks, while also learning how to properly use safety equipment. “It’s not just enough to show the official that I have it. You know how to use it. All these things, they will be trained,” he noted.

On the issue of ethics, Dr. Ogun said the ITF is addressing challenges of attitude, character, and behavior among artisans. “That is one of the problems of our artisans. Manners, behavior, their character, their attitude to work and to fellow Nigerians, we are going to do that and we have started that now,” he said, explaining that this phase will run for six to eight weeks before artisans move to technical training.

He also emphasized that the training will be conducted in local languages to accommodate artisans who do not understand English. “Don’t forget, most of our artisans cannot speak English, do not understand English. English is not our father’s language, but they communicate with us,” he explained.

By reiterating ITF’s presence in Plateau and showcasing its ongoing national programs, Dr. Ogun reassured citizens that the Fund remains committed to both the state and Nigeria’s future workforce.

Abia Gov Spent N14.43b on Public Schools, Dismisses Missing Funds Claim

0

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has revealed that his administration has so far spent about N14.43 billion on the retrofitting of 61 public schools across the state as of June 2025.

The governor made this disclosure during his monthly media chat tagged “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” which was held on Friday at the Government House, Umuahia.

He explained that the huge investment in education is part of his transformational agenda to improve infrastructure and learning conditions in public schools.

Governor Otti’s comment came in response to questions arising from a statement credited to opposition politician Eze Chikamnayo, who had demanded accountability over funds allocated for school renovation.

The governor dismissed the claims and insisted that his government has been transparent in handling public finances.

He explained that the figures published on the government’s official website are accurate and noted that those raising doubts fail to properly understand how accounting systems work.

According to him, “There is something called state S. F. A. S. It is a programme by World Bank which requires states to publish their budget performance. What is budget? Budget is an estimate. So these things are very simple. But at the end of the day, what is important is what is the cash that has been spent.”

Governor Otti stated that the audited financial statement of Abia State as of December 31, 2024, clearly shows the expenditure details. He pointed out that the administration has put strong financial measures in place to ensure accountability.

“What this government does is that before we hand over money to you, we must collect an advance payment guarantee. So at any point in time, if you are working for us, your money must be in our hands and not the other way round. So if you take a walk, you know you will lose money,” he said.

The governor stressed that no funds are missing from the state’s accounts as alleged. “So when somebody goes to town and says 54 billion is missing, unfortunately for him, he is talking to the wrong people.

When you look at this government, at least 3 or 4 members of the Executive Council are fellows of the Institute of Chartered Accountant.

So if you want to take on this government, it should not come from numbers, particularly for a man who doesn’t understand numbers,” Governor Otti declared.

Governor Otti also used the opportunity to address allegations made by Eze Chikamnayo, a former Commissioner for Information in the state. He said that Chikamnayo’s criticisms are politically motivated and linked to his past attempts to gain favor with successive governments.

“So to Eze Chikamnayo, I have a message for him. This is a different government. And my response to his request that came at the beginning of this administration remained the same. The person he sent to me, oh he wants to be part of this government, I told him no. And the answer is no. So we have followed him. He has been part of every government since 1999. In 2007, he started blackmailing the governor at that time and they called him and gave him jobs,” Otti explained.

The governor further noted that his government would not succumb to blackmail or intimidation. He accused the opposition figure of having a long history of seeking personal benefits from those in power.

“So if he likes, let him hang on the transformer. This government would not call him. So he said I should do a video. I checked the records and I found out about 5 or 6 schools are being done in Umunneochi as we speak. He should come home and see them. If he is not afraid of coming home,” the governor said.

Otti made it clear that he would not go out of his way to prove his government’s achievements to critics. “I should not do a video. Why should I do a video and prove to him that I am working in his local government? No, he should come. I should not stay in Abuja. And if he comes, please somebody should also tell him not to forget to also visit the university where he claimed he read law. I am also working there. And to the people that sent him, first of all they sent the wrong person,” the governor added.

Governor Otti also alleged that Chikamnayo was sponsored by individuals with political interests to hold press conferences against his administration. He described the move as unfortunate, saying the sponsor relied on someone who lacked credibility.

“A man without credibility. You don’t need to send him to go and talk about it. And in any case they may not have found a man with credibility to come and talk rubbish,” he said.

The governor said his administration will not be distracted by opposition attacks or resort to backdoor negotiations.

“Because people keep quiet, they think they can get away with anything. You blackmail him, they will call you for discussion. I will never call you (Chikamnayo) for negotiation. Never. So maybe you need to set up another structure,” Governor Otti emphasized.

The state government maintained that the billions already spent on education infrastructure are visible in the ongoing retrofitting of schools across different local government areas. According to Otti, the project is part of a larger plan to ensure that Abia’s education system is modern and competitive.
