Ekiti Gov Launches Export Accelerator to Boost MSME

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to positioning the State’s products for global competitiveness, urging local entrepreneurs to embrace international standards to thrive in the export market.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Oyeniyi Adebayo, at the opening of a two-day Export Accelerator Programme in Ado-Ekiti, the Governor said the initiative would help Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) package their goods to meet global requirements, earn foreign exchange, create jobs and diversify the State’s economy.

Governor Oyebanji stated that his administration had been deliberate in creating policies and partnerships to open new trade corridors for Ekiti businesses.

He stressed that with the right technical support, access to finance, and international exposure, products from the State could compete anywhere in the world.

“Our products and services can be consumed and enjoyed all over the world, but there are requirements that must be met to play on the world stage,” he said. He added that the programme aimed to equip business owners with knowledge and tools to access both national and international markets.

In her welcome address, the State Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Mrs. Omotayo Adeola, said the training, organised in partnership with the Ekiti State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (EKDIPA), was part of the government’s ‘Ekiti Without Borders vision’.

She explained that the programme responded to the growing demand from entrepreneurs seeking guidance on entering export markets, noting that participants would be trained in export processes such as product packaging, certification, marketing, and value addition.

Mrs. Adeola assured that the Ministry would keep working with relevant agencies to remove barriers preventing small businesses from accessing global trade opportunities.

The Director-General of EKDIPA, Ms. Ololade Olutola, described the programme as a strategic step to boost the marketability of Ekiti businesses worldwide and strengthen the State’s economy.

She said EKDIPA would continue linking local businesses to both domestic and foreign investors, adding that a thriving export sector would not only generate foreign exchange but also drive industrialisation and attract new investments.

Ekiti State Coordinator of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Mrs. Emily Otoide, outlined available support services for exporters, including company registration, product identification, participation in international trade fairs, access to grants, and low-interest export loans.

She pledged the Council’s readiness to work closely with exporters to navigate regulatory processes and connect them to viable markets. According to her, the NEPC’s role goes beyond promoting Nigerian products abroad to ensuring they meet the expectations of foreign buyers.

An export promotion consultant and resource person at the event, Mrs. Adaora Onyeke, encouraged participants not to view the export business as overly complex or capital-intensive.

She highlighted the high potential of both agricultural and non-agricultural products in foreign markets, stressing that value addition increases returns in hard currency.

Mrs. Onyeke urged entrepreneurs to move beyond raw material exports, noting that finished and semi-finished products often attract higher prices abroad.

She shared success stories of Nigerian entrepreneurs who started small but became global suppliers through strategic branding and consistent quality.

Dignitaries at the event included the Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Mr. Adedayo Falua; National Executive Member and Chairman, MSME Trade Group, NACCIMA, Chief Kola Akosile; President, EKICCIMA, Alhaji Olufemi Hassan; President, National Association of Small Scale Industrialists, Mr. Afolabi Akosile; and Centre Manager, Technology Incubation Centre, Mr. Tola Fasan, among others.

NUC Releases Revised 2025 Guidelines for Establishing Private Universities in Nigeria

0

August 13, 2025 – The National Universities Commission has released a reviewed set of guidelines for the establishment of private universities in Nigeria. The Commission, which operates under the Federal Ministry of Education, said the move follows provisions of the Education Act (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions), CAP E3, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

This law empowers the NUC to ensure orderly development of university education in the country.

In a statement titled “Moratorium on Establishment of Private Universities in Nigeria” issued on 10 February 2025, the NUC confirmed that it has commenced the review of its guidelines for licensing private universities. The Commission explained that the aim is to ensure that approved institutions are able to meet the demands of modern higher education in the 21st century. “Details will be communicated to stakeholders in due course,” it added.

Acting on the directive of the Honourable Minister of Education, the NUC has now informed all applicants with pending applications and the general public of the following reviewed guidelines:

  1. Deadline for Payment of Processing Fee:
    a) All Proprietors with Pending Active Applications for establishment of private universities in Nigeria, yet to undergo NUC Management Approval and onward transmission to Honourable Minister of Education, are required to pay non- refundable reviewed Processing Fee of ₦25,000,000.00 (Twenty-Five Million Naira) within 30 working days from the date of this Advertorial and failure to do so will result in their Applications becoming invalid.
    b) Applicants that paid the old Processing Fee of ₦5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira) are now required to pay the balance of non- refundable fee of ₦20,000,000.00 (Twenty Million Naira) within the specified time frame or face the same fate as in 1(a) above.
  2. Timelines within which to Request for Verification Visits:
    i) Upon confirmation of payment of Processing Fee:
    a) Proprietors of Pending Active Applications awaiting First Verification Visit have 90 days from the date of payment to formerly request for the First Verification Visit and failure to do so will result in their Applications becoming invalid.
    b) Proprietors of Pending Active Applications awaiting Second Verification Visit have 180 days from the date of the First Verification Visit or the date of payment of balance of Processing Fee within which to request for the Second Verification Visit and failure to do so will result in their Applications becoming invalid.
ii) Confirmation Visit: Proprietors of Applications that fail 2nd Verification Visit shall pay an additional non-refundable processing fee of ₦10,000,000 (Ten Million Naira) and shall request for Confirmation Visit within 180 days from the date of the 2nd Verification Visit and failure to do so will result in their Applications becoming invalid.
  3. Movement to Permanent Site:
All Licensed Private Universities are required to move to their permanent sites at the end of the first Phase of development (i.e. end of the first 5 years).
  4. Prohibition of Satellite Campuses:
Proposed Private Universities are henceforth not allowed to designate multi-campuses across different States in the Federation.
  5. Prohibition of Transnational Education without Approval:
Private Universities shall not engage in transnational education without the approval of the NUC.
  6. Need for Prompt Action:
All applicants are advised to act promptly and ensure full compliance with the above Ministerial directives (on revised Guidelines and Timelines) to avoid undue delay and eventual cancellation of their Applications.

The Commission emphasised that the reviewed rules apply immediately to both ongoing and new applications.

According to the Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullah Yusuf Ribadu, the adjustments will help protect the quality of education and guarantee that institutions are adequately prepared before they are licensed.

“These measures are not intended to discourage investment in higher education but to ensure that those who wish to establish universities meet the required standards and timelines,” he said.

He explained that the updated processing fee and stricter verification timelines are designed to eliminate delays that often cause stagnation in the licensing process. He also warned that applications that fail to comply with the payment deadlines or request timelines will be considered invalid without further notice.

The NUC also reaffirmed its position on permanent site requirements, noting that operating from a permanent campus is a key step in institutional development.

The restriction on satellite campuses, the Commission added, is to prevent resource dilution and ensure proper supervision of academic quality.

Furthermore, the Commission said the ban on transnational education without approval is aimed at curbing unregulated foreign partnerships that could undermine the country’s education system. It urged potential investors to seek proper authorisation before engaging in such arrangements.

For more details, the Commission advised interested persons and institutions to contact the Acting Director, Directorate for the Establishment of Private Universities, at its headquarters located at 26, Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama District, Abuja. The official contact number provided is 08036145399.

The Executive Secretary concluded by saying that the NUC will continue to provide guidance to stakeholders to ensure compliance. “We are committed to the orderly growth of Nigeria’s university system, and we will work with genuine investors who are ready to follow the right processes,” he stated.

FG Begins Recruitment Plans for Upcoming National Population Census

0

August 13, 2025 – The Nigerian Government is getting ready to recruit youths for the upcoming National Population Census, which will be conducted across the country in the coming months.

The National Population Commission (NPC) has confirmed that preparations are ongoing to ensure a successful exercise, which is expected to create thousands of temporary job opportunities for young Nigerians.

The recruitment will be announced as positions for ‘ad-hoc staff’ across various grade levels.

This update was shared Today, August 13, 2025, by the NPC Commissioner representing Kaduna State, Hajiya Sa’adatu Dogon Bauchi Garba, widely known as Saa Dogon Bauchi, through a post on her official Facebook page.

She wrote, “Census coming soon! Insha Allah… Matasa kowa ya fito da CV gaife guda insha’Allah,” which translates to “Census coming soon! Insha Allah… All youths should bring their CVs, Insha Allah.”

The call is seen as an invitation for Nigerian youths to begin preparing their job application documents early to take advantage of the temporary employment opportunities that will be available during the census.

These jobs will allow participants to earn income, gain valuable work experience, and contribute to an important national project.

Saa Dogon Bauchi stressed that the upcoming census is more than just a headcount. She described it as a vital national exercise for gathering accurate demographic data that will guide government policies in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

The NPC has indicated that it will use modern technology and digital tools during the process to ensure accurate, transparent, and reliable data collection.

For many young people, the announcement offers a timely opportunity to secure short-term employment in a government-backed project.

As preparations intensify, youths across Nigeria are being encouraged to get their CVs ready and stay informed about the recruitment process.

It is expected that some people will attempt to use this information to maliciously mislead unsuspecting candidates. As such, interested applicants are urged to only rely on announcements from official channels in the coming days, particularly the NPC.
