TETFund Allocates N1.6 Trillion to Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

0

August 10, 2025 – The Tertiary Education Trust Fund has announced a record allocation of N1.6 trillion for interventions across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, the highest in its history. The fund, generated from the 3% education tax on company profits under the TETFund Act, will be used to meet urgent needs in education, healthcare training, energy infrastructure, and student support.

This was disclosed by Aminu Bello Masari, Chairman of TETFund’s Governing Board and former Governor of Katsina State, during a media briefing in Katsina on Sunday. Masari provided a detailed breakdown of how the funds are being allocated, stressing the importance of transparency and impact.

“The interventions are demand-driven. Institutions write to us, and we approve projects for them based on their needs and available resources,” Masari said.

From the total sum, N460 billion, representing 40% of the allocation, has been designated for direct interventions in tertiary institutions nationwide. In each state, one university, one polytechnic, and one college of education have been selected to benefit from these funds.

A further N225 billion has been disbursed to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to support the Federal Government’s student loan scheme, aimed at expanding higher education access for financially disadvantaged students.

To tackle energy challenges, N70 billion has been allocated for solar and gas-powered generation facilities in campuses, reducing dependence on unstable grid electricity and improving learning environments.

N25 billion has also been set aside to boost campus security through street lighting and other safety infrastructure.

Addressing Nigeria’s shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, TETFund has committed over N100 billion to strengthen medical sciences training. This move follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to curb the migration of medical personnel and rebuild capacity in the healthcare sector.

“The President is worried about this trend and its impact on the healthcare system,” Masari said. “He wants measures in place to enable recovery through deliberate policies, such as this ongoing TETFund intervention.”

As part of this healthcare initiative, three institutions in each geopolitical zone have received N4 billion each to expand facilities and programmes in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, laboratory science, and other critical areas. The aim is to double Nigeria’s healthcare workforce and improve service delivery.

Masari emphasised that accountability remains a priority, with TETFund employing a robust monitoring and evaluation framework supported by independent consultants.

He noted that interventions are implemented annually at both state and zonal levels to ensure equitable distribution and significant results across the country. “This will greatly improve healthcare delivery nationwide,” Masari stated.

Ignore False Claims of TVET Training Allowance Release

August 10, 2025 – There is an ongoing wave of false claims on social media, especially Facebook, stating that the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) training allowance has been released.

Posts carrying phrases like “TVET training allowance has been released!” and “TVET: training allowance is given” are being widely shared. However, checks show that neither the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) nor the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has made any official statement regarding payment to trainees or trainers.

No applicant has received or confirmed any payment from TVET at this time. None of those spreading the claims have provided payment proof such as a screenshot, relying instead on misleading posts to increase engagement. Authorities have warned that such misinformation could expose unsuspecting applicants to scams.

Applicants should wait for an official announcement from the federal government before believing any payment news.

Recently, the list of accredited trainers was released, which is a sign that preparations for the program are ongoing.

The federal government cannot begin payment while the list of shortlisted candidates for TVET training has not yet been released.

Data from the NBTE shows that over 1.3 million applications were received for the program, but the target is to train about 900,000 people. Between 500,000 and 900,000 applicants will eventually be selected for hands-on training, meaning the final number could be lower than 900,000.

Applicants should be patient and rely only on verified updates from the program. The next steps will involve the release of the shortlist and posting selected candidates to their nearest training centers.

Applicants are encouraged to stay alert, as fake news can easily mislead and cause financial or personal harm. The public is advised to ignore unverified payment claims and focus on official communication channels for accurate information about the TVET training allowance and program schedule.

Osun Govt Calls FG for Release of Withheld LG Funds

0

OSOGBO – 10/08/2025 – The Osun State Government has once again called on the Federal Government to release local government allocations belonging to the state, in line with the recent Court of Appeal judgement on the leadership of local governments in Osun.

In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the government reaffirmed that there is no legal or political justification for withholding the funds.

According to him, “before the law today, the elected chairmen and councilors that were produced based on the local government elections of 22nd February, 2025, are the official leadership of the local governments in Osun State.”

The commissioner stated that the Federal Government and the Presidency are fully aware of the situation, noting that the court judgement removing the APC Yes/No election chairmen and councillors remains valid. He added that this decision was upheld by the 13th June judgement of the Court of Appeal.

“As a matter of fact, there should not be any further controversy after the appeal court judgement recognizing the elected chairmen and councillors who are products of the 22nd February, 2025, local government elections,” he said.

The government clarified that there is no judicial ruling stopping the release of the funds, stressing that the Supreme Court judgement on local government autonomy has never been implemented.

Alimi further explained that even if the Supreme Court ruling were applied to Osun, the local government accounts for such payments would still need to be opened with the duly elected officials from the February elections as signatories, in accordance with state law and Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The commissioner also disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu only became aware of the funds seizure after reading about it on the front page of the Nigerian Tribune during the Eid holidays.

This, he said, suggests that the Attorney-General of the Federation instructed the Accountant General of the Federation to withhold the funds without the president’s approval. “We, therefore, appeal to Mr. President to intervene and order the release of Osun local government allocations,” he urged.

The Osun State Government welcomed the intervention of traditional rulers and other respected leaders in seeking the release of the funds. “We further support the plan by the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers to meet Mr. President on this matter.

The local government crisis is beyond politics as it has to do with governmental levels that directly affect the lives of our people. The intervention of our apolitical monarchs is therefore a welcome development,” the statement noted.

Alimi alleged that the decision to withhold the funds was aimed at targeting Governor Ademola Adeleke. However, he stressed that the real victims are the people of Osun, who have been benefiting from grassroots development initiatives.

“The attack on the state Governor has failed and we urge those behind the illegal move to abandon the anti-people path and release Osun local government funds without further delay,” he concluded.

Signed: Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, Hon. Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment.
