Kajuru LGA Begins 2025 Free Fertilizer Distribution for Farming Season

Kajuru Local Government Secretariat witnessed a major event today as the Executive Chairman, Hon. Dauda Madaki, officially launched the distribution of free fertilizer to farmers for the 2025 farming season. This initiative is part of the Kaduna State Government’s strategic agricultural program under the leadership of Governor Senator Uba Sani, CON.

Speaking at the main store of the Secretariat, Hon. Madaki praised Governor Uba Sani for his dedication to boosting food production and promoting agricultural sustainability.

“This is a timely lifeline for our farmers, and I am confident that Kajuru’s community will make the best use of these inputs to achieve a harvest that can meet both local and state-wide consumption,” he said.

The Chairman cautioned beneficiaries against selling the fertilizers, stressing that they should be applied directly on farms to ensure maximum yields. “These fertilizers are meant to support your farms, not to be sold,” he warned.

A total of 4,000 bags of fertilizer have been allocated to Kajuru LGA, with each farmer receiving two bags. Distribution will be carried out at designated redemption centers in Kajuru, Kasuwan Magani, and Kufana to ensure efficiency and easy access for all beneficiaries.

The distribution aligns with the state’s broader plan to strengthen food security and support rural development.

Ekiti Govt Partners CESEL in N200m Solar Irrigation for Youth Farmers

0

The Ekiti State Government has announced a major step toward transforming its agricultural sector through a partnership with Community Energy Social Enterprise Limited (CESEL) for the deployment of solar irrigation facilities to youth farmers.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Ebenezer Boluwade, disclosed the development in Ado-Ekiti, stating that Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji approved the project as part of efforts to boost agricultural production and address food security challenges in Nigeria.

Boluwade said the State Government and CESEL had agreed to begin with a pilot programme in selected farming centres as proof of concept. Under the arrangement, N200,000,000 has been approved for the construction of modular solar-powered irrigation systems at farm hubs currently in use under the Bring Back Youths into Agriculture (BBYA) programme.

He explained that the initiative is a key part of the State’s plan to modernise farming, improve productivity, and reduce reliance on rain-fed agriculture.

According to him, the pilot will lead to a larger rollout of solar irrigation under the proposed Productive Use of Energy (PUE) component of the World Bank and Rural Electrification Agency’s Distributed Access for the Renewable Energy Scale-Up in Nigeria (DARES).

The Commissioner noted that the irrigation systems will draw water from perennial sources across Ekiti, allowing year-round farming and reducing risks linked to unpredictable weather.

The solar-powered facilities will be deployed in Ose Centre, Emure Local Government; Ado-Ekiti; Ikere; and Aramoko, all of which have active youth-led farms under the BBYA programme.

Boluwade stressed that crop failures caused by irregular rainfall in recent years had prompted the government to act. Partnering with CESEL and adopting its Irri-Go (Irrigation-As-A-Service) product, he said, would bring sustainable solar irrigation to farmers.

CESEL’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Patrick Tolani, said Ekiti was chosen as the first location for the company’s southern Nigeria solar irrigation campaign after a comprehensive assessment.

He noted that similar interventions in some northern states, supported by Propcom+ and delivered by Palladium International, had achieved significant results.

Tolani commended Governor Oyebanji’s support, describing it as “top-notch” and pointing out that the state had cleared land for 13 cluster-based youth farming centres. “All these support systems, which are not available in other states, qualify Ekiti to become the headquarters for Irri-Go in Nigeria,” he said, confirming that CESEL has established its national headquarters in Ado-Ekiti.

He praised the BBYA programme, noting that the state’s proactive measures and infrastructure readiness set it apart. Tolani also revealed that CESEL is working with top academics from the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom and plans to visit Brazil later this year.

The visit, supported by a travel grant from the UK Government, will focus on studying climate-smart agricultural practices that have delivered up to 800 percent increases in crop yields.

Tolani explained that the trip would follow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to Brazil, which laid the groundwork for future partnerships between Nigerian agricultural stakeholders and their Brazilian counterparts.

He expressed optimism that the collaboration between Ekiti State, CESEL, and international partners would set a new standard for youth empowerment and sustainable farming in the country.

The Commissioner concluded by reaffirming the State Government’s commitment to agricultural development, economic diversification, and national food security.

He emphasised that the solar irrigation initiative is a strategic move to engage more youths in farming, improve output, and stabilise food supply chains regardless of climate challenges.

City and Guilds Approves ITF as Certified Exam Centre for Nigerian Artisans

0

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has achieved a major milestone in its efforts to train and certify Nigerian artisans to meet global standards, as the City and Guilds of London (UK) has granted official approval for the ITF to operate as a certified examination centre. This recognition places the ITF among six centres across Nigeria with similar approvals.

The approval, signed by the Chief Executive Officer of City and Guilds, Kirstie Donnelly, authorises the ITF to conduct examinations for various international qualifications. These include Level 2 Diploma in Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Technology and Maintenance Technology, Level 2 Diploma in Housekeeping Services, Food Preparation and Culinary Art, Foundation Certificate in Basic Electronic Engineering, and Basic Plumbing.

Others are Level 2 in ICT Systems and Principles, Level 3 ICT Systems and Principles, Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying, Level 2 IVQ in IT Systems Support, and Level 3 IVQ Advanced Diploma in IT Systems Support.

According to the ITF, this approval followed several inspections of its training facilities nationwide by the examination body, which began in December 2023 shortly after the inauguration of the current management of the Fund. These visits led to a Train-the-Trainer workshop for 22 ITF officers, who will handle the training of artisans in the approved fields and oversee the examinations.

The Director-General of the ITF, Dr. Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun, highlighted the significance of the approval, stating, “This approval is significant as it will enable Nigerian artisans to gain internationally recognised qualifications and potentially open opportunities for jobs worldwide, thereby positively impacting the poverty and unemployment situation in the country.”

A statement signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Thomas Ngor, said the development aligns with the ITF’s mission to set and evaluate training standards while providing need-based human capital interventions in line with global best practices.

It is also seen as crucial for the Skill-Up Artisans (SUPA) programme, a Federal Government initiative implemented by the ITF to train, retrain, certify, and license Nigerian artisans to international standards.

Ngor added that SUPA aims to improve the employability of artisans both locally and internationally by granting access to globally recognised certifications, which will encourage self-reliance.

Apart from its partnership with City and Guilds, the ITF is also engaging with other international certification bodies such as Alberk QA for similar collaborations.

Dr. Ogun further noted, “We believe that if our efforts come to fruition, Nigeria will become a major exporter of skilled manpower alongside countries like India, China, and Indonesia, which will in turn earn Nigeria foreign exchange. Already, the ITF is in communication with some embassies and foreign missions to determine their artisanal needs to accommodate them in training under the Skill-Up Artisans Programme.”
