The launch took place at Lamonde Hotel in Jos and was presided over by the Permanent Secretary, Policy and General Service Office of the SGS, Timothy Gayi, who represented the governor.

In his address, Gayi reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to financial inclusion and sustainable development, describing the VSLA as a major tool for transforming the lives of women, youth, and low-income households.

“The program is designed to encourage a culture of regular savings and provide beneficiaries with access to microloans, which are vital for building household resilience and stimulating local economies,” he said.

He further assured that the government would continue to monitor the program’s success and provide training in financial literacy, business skills, and cooperative development to ensure long-term impact.

Government officials, including the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, the Director General of PLASMIDA, the ALGON Chairman, and the Commissioner of Agriculture, expressed strong support for the initiative.

Hon. Adams Bulus Lekshak, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, thanked all stakeholders involved in the formal launch and emphasized the importance of fostering savings and investment opportunities in rural communities.

Its key program areas include community mobilization, livelihood and poverty reduction, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, and partnerships with organizations such as Oxfam.

He noted that the VSLA has already developed a strong saving culture among beneficiaries, many of whom are using their savings for business and livelihood improvements.

Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives from the Commissioner of Agriculture’s office, the DG of PLASMIDA, and the ALGON Chairman.

The event also featured testimonies from beneficiaries, including one who shared her journey from being a primary school teacher to becoming a successful farmer and livestock owner, crediting her achievements to disciplined savings through the VSLA.

Edo State to Deploy Lithium Battery Motorcycles for Agriculture

0

The Edo State Government has announced plans to adopt green technology initiatives to drive environmentally sustainable development and reduce environmental impact, with a strong focus on boosting agricultural productivity across the eighteen Local Government Areas.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir (Dr.) Lucky Eseigbe, during a meeting with producers of Lithium Battery-Powered Motorcycles, EV Machine Tools Nigeria Limited, at his office in Benin City. The company was in the state to explore a potential partnership aimed at promoting clean energy transportation.

Sir Eseigbe noted that Governor Monday Okpebholo is committed to positioning Edo as a prime destination for both local and international investors. “The introduction of green technology will significantly improve transportation, particularly in supporting agricultural development across the state,” he said.

He added that such technology offers multiple benefits, including environmental protection, job creation, support for sustainable farming, and improving farmers’ ability to transport produce, thereby enhancing food security.

According to him, the State and Local Governments are ready to provide an enabling environment and allocate space for EV Machine Tools Nigeria Limited to begin production and sales of the Electric Motorbikes, provided they are affordable for residents.

Speaking at the meeting, the spokesperson for EV Machine Tools Nigeria Limited, Mr. Afolabi Kayode, highlighted the advantages of their Electric Motorcycle. He explained that the bikes, produced in Shagamu, Ogun State, require no fuel or engine oil, operating entirely on a lithium battery.

Once fully charged, each bike can travel up to 100 kilometers before needing another charge, making it an eco-friendly option with zero noise emissions.

Kayode said the company’s visit to Edo was to demonstrate the motorcycle’s functionality and explore business opportunities. “We believe this innovation can contribute to sustainable transportation and economic growth in the state,” he stated.

The meeting concluded with a live demonstration at the Edo State Secretariat premises, where the unique features of the Electric Motorcycle were showcased. The display drew attention to the potential of green transportation to transform mobility, create jobs, and strengthen the agricultural supply chain within the state.
