0

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has announced plans to deepen collaboration with Flutterwave to drive local innovation and support national development.

Speaking during a strategic visit by Flutterwave Co-founder, Mr. Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, at NASRDA’s headquarters in Abuja, the Director General of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to focus on homegrown solutions. “Nigeria can no longer rely on imported technologies. We must harness our local talent and resources for sustainable growth,” he said.

Dr. Adepoju described the visit as a significant step toward strengthening NASRDA’s mission of developing and launching satellites.

He revealed that discussions explored a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both parties to cover innovation financing, support for NASRDA’s microfinance bank, and the completion of the Agency’s Assembly, Integration, Testing and Design Centre (AITDC).

Mr. Aboyeji commended NASRDA’s achievements and pledged Flutterwave’s readiness to collaborate in areas such as satellite testing, communication infrastructure, and rocket development.

“We are impressed by the progress and are eager to contribute to advancing Nigeria’s space capabilities,” he said.

The visit concluded with a tour of NASRDA’s major facilities, including the AITDC, Space Museum, and Planetarium, highlighting the agency’s expanding role in technological growth.

NEC Approves Over N122 Billion Flood Intervention Funds for States, FCT, Others

0

At its 150th meeting, the National Economic Council (NEC) received a detailed presentation from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the current status of flood incidents across the country and the agency’s 2025 Flood Preparedness and Response Strategies. The meeting, held on Thursday, addressed urgent measures to mitigate the impact of floods nationwide.

Following the presentation, NEC directed the release of special intervention funds to all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and relevant ministries and agencies to support flood mitigation and emergency response efforts.

According to the approved allocation, each state and the FCT will receive N3 billion, while the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation will each get N1.5 billion. NEMA itself will receive N10 billion to enhance nationwide disaster management operations.

NEMA described the intervention as both strategic and timely, noting that it reflects the commitment of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to “safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.”

The agency emphasized the need for collective action, urging state governments to strengthen their State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), operationalize Local Emergency Management Councils (LEMCs), and enforce physical planning laws and building code compliance.

“Disaster preparedness is not optional but a shared mandate across all levels of governance,” NEMA stated.

The agency assured that it would continue working closely with state governments, relevant ministries, departments, agencies, LEMCs, and stakeholders to ensure coordinated, timely, and effective flood response efforts across the nation.

This, it added, is essential to reducing the risks posed by flooding and ensuring community safety nationwide.

NITDA to Equip 12.7 Million Nigerian Women with Digital Skills by 2027

0

The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa, represented by Dr Ahmed Tambuwal, Acting Director of the Digital Literacy and Capacity Building Department, has reaffirmed NITDA’s commitment to empowering Nigerian women through digital skills.

Speaking at the opening of the 2nd Cohort of the IgniteHer Bootcamp, organised in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, he said the programme aims to unlock income-generating opportunities, boost digital literacy, and improve economic well-being.

“Through the National Gender Digital Inclusion Strategy and the Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan 2.0 (2024–2027), we are working to empower 12.7 million women with digital skills by 2027,” he stated.

The initiative also seeks to break barriers, build networks, and create mentorship pathways that will foster sustainable growth for women in Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.

Maiha Urges AfDB to Boost Finance for Youth, Women in Nigeria’s $74bn Livestock Plan

0

The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to boost access to finance for youth and women engaged in livestock agribusiness across Nigeria. He made the appeal on Monday, 4 August 2025, during a high-level policy dialogue organised by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Abuja.

The event, themed “Access to Finance and Empowering Youth and Women for Agribusiness Success,” brought together policymakers, development partners, financiers, and agripreneurs.

Maiha stressed the importance of financial inclusion, asset support, and market linkage for rural livestock farmers. Citing data from the Enhancing Financial Inclusion and Access (EFInA) Access to Finance Survey, he noted that formal financial inclusion in Nigeria rose from 56 percent in 2020 to 64 percent in 2023. “However, 26 percent of Nigerians are still financially excluded, which means 28.8 million adults are not part of the financial system. Financial exclusion is pervasive in rural areas due to illiteracy, low penetration by banks and fintech, sociocultural attitudes, and poor infrastructure,” he explained.

He revealed that the Ministry of Livestock Development is intensifying efforts to empower 37,000 young men and women through practical training, provision of starter assets, and sustainable access to markets. According to him, the Nigeria Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL-GAS) aims to transform the livestock sector from a $33 billion to a $74 billion industry within five years.

“The ten-pillar NL-GAS has two pillars that are the main areas of discussion here today. These are Finance and Insurance and the Women and Youth Initiative. We are collaborating with different actors to ensure that our farmers and other stakeholders are financially included in all sectors such as dairy, small ruminant, poultry, and rural trade,” Maiha said.

He urged the AfDB and other partners to design financing options that align with the realities of the livestock industry. He also pointed to the importance of targeted policy reforms, including strengthened credit guarantees and cooperative-based lending, to unlock opportunities for informal livestock players.

Other goodwill messages came from the Special Adviser to the President on Livestock Development, Professor Attahiru Jega; Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa; Minister of Youth Development, Senator Atiku Abubakar Bagudu; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning; and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari.

In his welcome address, Dr. Abdul Kamara, AfDB Country Director for Nigeria, outlined the Bank’s strategy for transforming agribusiness while ensuring that financing reaches vulnerable groups. “Our objective is not just about giving out loans; it is about designing inclusive, adaptive financing mechanisms that empower women and youth where they are and with what they have,” Kamara stated.

He observed that only 11.4 percent of Nigerian businesses access credit through banks, with most relying on informal lending, if at all.

This, he said, limits economic growth. Highlighting the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (I-DICE) programme and other value chain-focused initiatives, Kamara emphasised the AfDB’s commitment to driving smart agribusiness investments that promote employment and strengthen local food systems.

Delivering his keynote address, Senator Abubakar Kyari called for faster adoption of innovation and retention of value within local economies through public-private partnerships.

“We cannot continue exporting raw produce while importing finished products. If we want true empowerment, we must fix the value chains, especially financing, processing, and certification,” he said.

Lagos Launches Second Phase of Women Empowerment Programme

The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with Africa HCD Plus, has launched the second phase of its Women Empowerment Programme through the Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This initiative is focused on boosting economic resilience and financial inclusion for women in underserved communities.

According to the organisers, the programme is designed to empower participants with practical knowledge in digital banking, savings culture, budgeting, and financial planning.

“Our goal is to equip these women with the tools to make better financial decisions, improve their livelihoods, and contribute to the local economy,” said a representative from the SDG Office.

The programme has so far reached 400 women across targeted grassroots communities including Surulere, Papa Ashafa in Agege, Ijede, and Agura-Gberigbe in Ikorodu. The outreach provided intensive sensitisation on how to access formal financial services, micro-credit options, and how to manage money using technology.

Participants also learned about safe investment opportunities that promote long-term financial security. “We focused on building financial literacy because it’s essential for community development and individual empowerment,” said one of the facilitators.

Private partners like Opay and Cowrywise supported the effort by offering on-site digital wallet onboarding and account registration, making financial access more immediate and convenient.

In addition, key government agencies such as the Lagos State Resident Registration Agency (LASRRA), Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), and the Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy were present.

These agencies delivered critical services including health insurance enrolment, resident identification, and climate adaptation education. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) also participated, helping attendees verify their National Identity Numbers.

The initiative not only aimed at expanding access to financial tools but also served as an entry point for social support systems, laying the groundwork for stronger economic participation. “This holistic approach bridges the financial gap and ensures no one is left out,” according to the organizers.
