Ekiti Govt to Lift Open Grazing Ban, Introduce New 2025 Grazing Law

At the Ekiti State Executive Council virtual meeting held on Tuesday, 29th July 2025, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji chaired a major policy discussion aimed at addressing the ongoing herders and farmers crisis.

A major decision from the meeting was the approval of a bill to repeal the Prohibition of Cattle and other Ruminants Grazing in Ekiti State Law No. 4 of 2016. The council has proposed a new legislation titled Cattle and other Ruminants Grazing in Ekiti State Law of 2025, which will be presented to the State House of Assembly for legislative review and passage.

According to Ekiti State government, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to curb grazing-related violence and create a legal framework for peaceful coexistence in rural communities.

The proposed bill introduces several new provisions. “The law will require that traditional rulers, chairmen of local governments, and the Governor must give approval before herders are settled in any part of the state,” official reports confirmed.

The new law also outlines procedures for the compulsory certification and registration of herdsmen intending to settle in Ekiti for grazing. It also clearly defines offences and penalties related to unguarded grazing of cattle and other ruminants.

This legislative move is aimed at improving land management, reducing conflicts, and ensuring safety and order in agrarian communities across Ekiti State.

The Ekiti State Executive Council, during its virtual meeting held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, and chaired by Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, approved a significant new policy direction aimed at boosting the digital economy. A key decision from the meeting was the approval of a bill to establish the Ekiti State Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The council, once backed by law, will create a solid legal and institutional framework to support the fast growth of digital innovation startups in Ekiti. “This move is part of the state’s wider strategy to promote technology-driven entrepreneurship,” a government spokesperson said.

According to the proposal, the council will provide an enabling environment for the promotion, establishment, and operation of startups within the digital innovation space. It will also focus on developing talent in the tech sector through structured training, mentorship programs, and digital education.

“The ultimate aim,” officials stated, “is to position Ekiti as a top digital technology hub in Africa with skilled innovators and exportable talent capacity.” The approved bill will now be presented to the Ekiti State House of Assembly for legislative processing.

FG SET4LYF Program to Empower 180,000 Nigerian Children Across All States

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs has entered into a major partnership with Junior Achievement Nigeria to launch the SET4LYF Program. This initiative will provide life-changing opportunities for 180,000 adolescent children across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT.

Junior Achievement Nigeria is part of Junior Achievement Worldwide, a global leader in youth-focused programs. The organization operates in over 100 countries, offering millions of young people skills in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and leadership.

Speaking on the partnership, the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said, “Through the SET4LYF Program, we are equipping children with leadership, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and essential life skills, preparing them to thrive, lead, and shape the future in an evolving world.”

She described the collaboration as “a bold step toward building a generation of young leaders who will power Nigeria’s future.”

The initiative focuses on preparing young Nigerians for work and business opportunities through digital skills, financial education, and personal development. It aims to promote economic empowerment and reduce youth unemployment across the country.

FG Launches Farmers Registry, Delivers 2,000 Tractors, Cultivates 133,000 Hectares of Wheat

The administration of President Bola Tinubu has begun a nationwide farmers’ data audit and registry. The goal is to remove “briefcase farmers”—individuals who fraudulently benefit from agricultural programs without contributing to food production.

According to government sources, this registry will be backed by a digital system that will ensure only genuine farmers receive support. “We are moving away from manual and corrupt systems. With this registry, only real farmers will benefit,” a senior official stated.

The audit is part of broader efforts to tackle food shortages and improve transparency in the distribution of agricultural interventions. High-level corruption in this area has long been blamed for inefficiency and waste, leading to high food prices and low productivity.

In addition, the government has finalized plans to set up cattle breeding centres across all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. These centres will be managed by the new federal ministry of livestock development. The centres aim to reduce clashes between farmers and herders while boosting the livestock value chain.

“Our goal is to make agriculture a major driver of Nigeria’s economy,” a government spokesperson explained. “We are investing heavily in infrastructure and support systems.”

The government’s plan also includes the ongoing mechanization program, which aims to deliver 10,000 tractors in five years. So far, 2,000 tractors and other farming equipment have arrived.

Other projects include the Special Agro Processing Zones supported by the African Development Bank and the Agropocket initiative, which has led to the cultivation of over 133,000 hectares of wheat in Northern Nigeria.

Bayelsa to Shortlist Candidates, Pay Teachers Salary Arrears in Ongoing Recruitment

0

The Bayelsa State Government has promised to soon shortlist qualified candidates for the ongoing teachers’ recruitment exercise across the state. The assurance was given on Monday by the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, during a meeting with a delegation of aggrieved applicants at the Government House in Yenagoa.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo made it clear that the state is committed to employing candidates who successfully passed the verification panel’s screening process.

He emphasized that the government will also settle the salary arrears of successful applicants who had already begun teaching in state-owned secondary schools before the recruitment was suspended.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Doubara Atasi, the Deputy Governor urged the applicants to remain calm and patient. He acknowledged the delay and explained that the recruitment process had to be reviewed due to serious irregularities discovered during a needs assessment of public schools in the state.

“The wheel of government grinds slowly but surely to achieve definite results. I understand your plight but you have to be patient,” Ewhrudjakpo said.

He pointed out that several issues plagued the initial recruitment phase, including cases of under-employment, the hiring of over-aged individuals, and nepotism.

According to him, the assessment had earlier determined that 997 teachers were needed across the eight local government areas. However, discrepancies in the recruitment led to some areas being overstaffed while others still lacked teachers.

“They ended up employing more people into areas where we already have more teachers,” the Deputy Governor noted. “Apart from that, some of the applicants were not qualified. For instance, somebody who wants to teach computer does not know what a keyboard or a CPU is.”

Ewhrudjakpo confirmed that the panel set up to investigate the process had completed its work, and once the Governor returns, the list of successful candidates will be approved.

“The Panel set up to interrogate the process discovered a lot of issues. So, the delay is as a result of cleaning up the process. But they have completed their job. So as soon as the Governor returns, we will get the approval and all of you who deserve employment will be employed,” he said.

He added that the provisional letters given to some applicants do not guarantee automatic employment. He explained that while some individuals may have the right qualifications, their attitude and commitment also matter.

“In any case, you should know that the letter they gave to you is provisional. So you are under probation. You may be qualified in terms of competence. But what about your character?” he asked.

On the planned protest by the applicants, Senator Ewhrudjakpo acknowledged their right to peaceful demonstration but cautioned against any action that could affect the rights of others.

“Protest is a fundamental constitutional right of every citizen, but there is always the need for protesters not to infringe on the rights of others in the course of exercising theirs,” he said.

He commended the affected applicants for their patriotism, noting that many of them continued to work in public schools despite the uncertainty surrounding their employment status. He assured them that their sacrifices would not be in vain.

“We assure you that all those who deserved to be employed will be employed. Those who worked for 6 or 3 or even two months before the exercise was suspended, your salary arrears will be paid, that is what I can assure you,” he added.

Earlier, Mr Teki Ayebaene, who led the delegation of affected applicants, said the planned protest was meant to peacefully highlight their frustrations. He explained that the group included about 800 applicants already serving in 413 government-owned secondary schools across the state.

He expressed disappointment over the prolonged delay in finalizing the recruitment process and urged the government to fast-track the necessary steps for full employment of all qualified candidates.
