ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Ministry of Education has announced a major move to strengthen Nigeria’s innovation system with the planned creation of a National Design and Development Agency.

This new agency will focus on turning local ideas into market-ready solutions, offering vital support like funding access, product development, and business scaling.

The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, made this known during a strategic tour of Inov8 Hub in Abuja, a key center for local innovation. Dr. Alausa stated, “Nigerians are among the most creative people globally, but they need structured support to thrive.”

He revealed that the Federal Government will also launch a National Research and Development Fund Agency to provide grants for impactful innovations.

“We’re enabling direct collaborations between innovators, manufacturers, and investors,” he said, highlighting the government’s plan to connect creative solutions with industries and market opportunities.

During the tour, Dr. Alausa inspected local technologies including cassava dryers, shredders, and modular poultry pens, praising their potential for rural development and job creation.

He spotlighted the Poultry Empowerment Programme as a game-changer for smallholder farmers. “These prefab pens are not just equipment, they are tools for food security and income generation,” he noted.

The Minister encouraged innovation hubs to seek sustainable models. “Innovation must be sustainable. From subsidies, we must move to self-sufficiency,” he added.

He appreciated TETFund and other stakeholders for their ongoing efforts, reaffirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to driving national development through education, research, and technology entrepreneurship.

FG Launches NiYA Ambassadors and Bamboo Empowerment Programme

Uyo, Akwa Ibom – The Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has marked this year’s World Youth Skills Day in Uyo with the launch of key youth empowerment initiatives, highlighting Akwa Ibom’s first-ever celebration of the United Nations-designated day since its inception in 2015.

Speaking at the event on July 15, the Minister stated, “Today in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, I joined young Nigerians, partners, and stakeholders to commemorate World Youth Skills Day — a momentous occasion not just nationally, but especially for Akwa Ibom, as the State marks this global day for the very first time since it was established by the United Nations in 2015.”

While Nigeria has celebrated this day ten times, this is the first edition held in Akwa Ibom. Olawande emphasized the importance of grassroots engagement in his collaboration with the state government.

“The event served as a powerful platform to deepen the synergy between the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Akwa Ibom State Government,” he said.

During the ceremony, the Minister announced the launch of two major projects aimed at community-level youth development.

“We seized the opportunity to launch two grassroots-driven initiatives: NiYA Ambassadors – designed to expand the reach and impact of the Nigerian Youth Academy across communities by building a network of change agents at the local level; and the Bamboo Youth Empowerment Programme – an innovative collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Akwa Ibom State Government, and the National Bamboo Farmers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NBFPMAN),” he explained.

The Bamboo Youth Empowerment Programme is set to tap into the region’s natural bamboo resources to drive job creation, climate-smart agriculture, and green business opportunities.

Olawande noted, “It was particularly encouraging to witness Akwa Ibom’s commitment to lead in this climate-smart and forward-looking agenda, given its vast bamboo resources.”

He also commended Governor Pastor Umo Eno for establishing a dedicated Ministry for Youth Development.

“I was also pleased to learn that Governor Pastor Umo Eno has established a dedicated Ministry for Youth Development — a direct response to a request I made during my last visit,” he said.

Another key moment at the event was the unveiling of the Arise Youth-Friendly Hub. According to Olawande, “This hub mirrors our flagship Youth House initiative at the national level — envisioned as a convergence point for creativity, dialogue, and inclusive youth development.”

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering young Nigerians through job creation, skill acquisition, and sustainable development efforts.

AfDB, ILO Launch Youth, Jobs and Skills Marker System to Boost Employment

0

The African Development Bank (AfDB), in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), has introduced a new framework to integrate youth employment, skills development, and entrepreneurship into its wide-ranging investments across Africa.

Known as the Youth, Jobs and Skills Marker System, this initiative aims to maximize the impact of every dollar invested by placing Africa’s young people at the center of development strategies.

The new system is aligned with the African Development Bank’s latest Ten-Year Strategy, which highlights the need to transform Africa’s demographic advantage into economic growth by focusing on young people.

This approach ensures that all Bank-funded projects, from agriculture to transport, energy, water, and education—systematically include measures that promote youth employability, entrepreneurship, and acquisition of practical skills.

Dr. Beth Dunford, the Bank’s Vice President for Agriculture, Human and Social Development, stated, “The Youth, Jobs and Skills Marker System is about ensuring Africa’s young people have a real say and active role in building sustainable economies and creating jobs – not as passive recipients of youth programs. This transformation of Bank practices and systems is a step toward making sure our investments have a positive impact on Africa’s young women and men.”

The Marker System focuses on three areas, including youth, skills, and jobs. Under the youth component, the Bank will provide support for youth-led micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises through targeted investments and operational support.

The skills segment aims to improve access to practical, market-driven training and apprenticeships, giving young people the tools to succeed in various industries. Finally, the jobs component is dedicated to ensuring that Bank-financed projects result in sustainable employment, especially by enhancing youth capabilities and promoting businesses along critical value chains.

Africa faces a pressing employment challenge, with about 10 to 12 million young people entering the labor market each year, but only around three million formal jobs available annually. In response, the Bank plans to focus on youth entrepreneurship and partner with the private sector to promote skills training and job creation over the next decade.

Peter van Rooij, Director of Multilateral Partnerships and Development Cooperation at the ILO, emphasized the broader global relevance of the initiative. “This initiative is very important because it allows us to significantly contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #8 that includes decent work for all. It also allows the International Labour Organization to influence the Bank’s work, to support their lending that is more geared toward more job creation and better jobs in a sustainable way.”

The new system is modeled after the Bank’s successful Gender Marker System and its digital dashboard, which categorizes projects by their impact on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The Youth, Jobs and Skills Marker System will similarly include an online platform. This platform will provide real-time data to support various Bank activities including country strategy paper development, mid-term reviews, annual reports, and project supervision. It will also aid in tracking youth-related outcomes in employment, training, and entrepreneurship.

The African Development Bank has already rolled out a pilot version of the Marker System ahead of its full implementation in 2026. The pilot is designed to test and refine the platform’s ability to collect accurate data, monitor youth skills acquisition, improve labor market information systems, and support evidence-based policymaking across the continent.

Technical support for developing the system came from the ILO, with financial backing from the Bank’s Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Multi-Donor Trust Fund.

According to both institutions, this is the first system of its kind initiated by a development finance institution, marking a significant step forward in aligning financial investments with sustainable youth-focused development outcomes.

NDDC Denies Skill Acquisition Programme in Rivers and Bayelsa

July 15, 2025 – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has publicly denied claims circulating in the media that it failed to pay trainees who reportedly participated in a skill acquisition programme allegedly held in Bayelsa and Rivers states.

Meanwhile, the Commission has not commented on the Youth Internship Scheme for 10,000 Niger Delta youths training with N50,000 stipend.

The viral skill training programme, which was said to have been organised by a religious group known as Victorious Prayer Network, allegedly involved over 2,000 trainees.

According to the organisers, the NDDC had promised to sponsor participants and provide starter packs, a promise they now accuse the Commission of not fulfilling.

In an official statement signed by Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Director of Corporate Affairs, and released today July 15, 2025, the Commission stated: “We wish to clarify that the NDDC approved no such training programme, and whatever training was organised under suspicious circumstances did not have the blessings and approval of the Commission.”

The statement further stressed, “The individuals behind these allegations against the NDDC were never engaged by the Commission to carry out skills training.”

Thompson-Wakama reaffirmed that the NDDC has no connection to the alleged programme, adding, “Our programmes are usually well-advertised and open to scrutiny. We recently launched a comprehensive technical skills acquisition programme to equip participants with practical, in-demand skills in Port Harcourt.”

Cautioning the public, especially the youth, the Commission advised: “Members of the public, especially our youths, are advised to be cautious and circumspect in dealing with some questionable persons claiming to be acting on behalf of the NDDC.”

The NDDC expressed concern over the attempt by “mischievous individuals” to exploit young people. “It is disturbing that some mischievous individuals are trying to take advantage of our youths who are genuinely eager to be gainfully engaged in legitimate activities,” the statement read.

Emphasizing its ongoing commitment to accountability, the Commission noted: “We assure all our stakeholders that we remain committed to transparency and fairness in all our activities, including our youth empowerment and skill acquisition programmes.”

The Commission encouraged the public to confirm all information regarding its programmes via official communication channels and its website at www.nddc.gov.ng where updates on youth training, entrepreneurship development, and capacity building are regularly shared.

Call For Submissions: Mapping of ICT Training Hubs in Plateau State

The Plateau State ICT Development Agency (PICTDA) has announced a statewide call for submissions from all ICT training centres operating within the state. The initiative is designed to create a comprehensive database of training hubs that can support digital skills development, public training, and capacity-building programmes.

“This exercise will help the Government identify and engage suitable facilities for future programmes that contribute to skills development and human capital growth in Plateau State,” said Dominic Gwaman Datong, Director General of PICTDA.

All institutions, companies, and organisations running ICT training facilities are encouraged to take part in this mapping exercise. PICTDA aims to promote inclusive access to digital education, empower youth through technology, and support digital economy growth in Nigeria. This database will enable the state to better manage opportunities related to job creation, ICT consulting, and remote learning platforms.

Interested parties are requested to submit details about their ICT centres by filling out the form available at this form Link.

“We appreciate your cooperation,” Datong added.

Imo Government Launches Global Tech Platform, Partners UC Berkeley to Train 100,000 Youths

The Imo State Government has launched a groundbreaking digital platform, ImoTalentHub.com, aimed at connecting thousands of local tech talents with international job markets.

Governor Hope Uzodimma unveiled the initiative as part of the administration’s broader Skill Up Imo programme, launched in 2022 to digitize the state’s economy and curb youth involvement in cybercrime and cultism.

The platform is built through a partnership with the University of California, Berkeley, and the U.S. Market Access Center. According to the state, the initiative targets the placement of 100,000 tech-trained youths in paid international roles by 2026.

“This platform is a gateway for Imo’s young minds, software developers, AI engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and digital designers—to connect with global employers in innovation hubs like Silicon Valley, London, Dubai, and Lagos,” Governor Uzodimma said during the launch.

With over 40,000 learners already graduated from Skill Up Imo, the state now boasts one of the largest pools of tech-trained individuals in Nigeria. The goal is not only to create remote job opportunities but also to improve Nigeria’s digital economy and expand foreign earnings through tech exports.

The government said ImoTalentHub serves as a bridge between learning and employment by providing graduates with verified profiles, portfolio showcases, and access to blockchain-powered smart contracts.

These contracts are designed to automate identity verification (KYC), ensure escrow payment protection, and manage tax compliance seamlessly.

“This means that a fintech firm in London can hire a back-end engineer in Owerri as easily and securely as hiring locally,” a statement from the government reads. “Payments in pounds or dollars are processed through fully regulated channels, proving that Imo’s digital workforce is ready for the global market.”

The University of California, Berkeley, plays a central role in the academic development of the program. Professors from the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology have conducted bootcamps focused on ethical artificial intelligence and venture capital for participants in Imo. They are also supporting the creation of cloud labs equipped with NVIDIA GPUs at the upcoming Imo Digital City campus.

A Founder Development Programme co-created with UC Berkeley will also give startups in Imo direct access to global venture capital and internationally recognized certification.

2025 NIMSA/Auwal Shanono/OCI Foundation Essay Competition Now Open

The 2025 edition of the NIMSA/Auwal Shanono/OCI Foundation Literary & Research Award for Medical Students (LARAMS) is now open for submissions. This marks the fifth national and sixth regional edition of the competition, offering students the opportunity to win cash prizes and contribute to a lifesaving cause.

The essay topic for this year is “Seconds matter: The impact of Early CPR in Cardiac Emergencies and Justifying the OCI Foundation’s Plan to Empower All Nigerians through the ‘Basic Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Response Strategies (BACERS)’ Project.”

Organizers say the competition is aimed at promoting awareness about the importance of emergency response in saving lives. According to a statement from the OCI Foundation, “Nigerian lives have been lost needlessly from sudden deaths resulting from collapses, accidents and other unfortunate issues. A big problem is that an overwhelming proportion of Nigerians are ill-equipped to respond properly in these life and death situations, with many lacking even the minimum knowledge of emergency resuscitation measures.”

In response, the Foundation is preparing to launch the BACERS program. This initiative is designed to educate Nigerians aged 10 and above in all 36 states and the FCT on how to respond to emergencies through CPR and other lifesaving strategies. The Foundation added, “The goal of BACERS is to ensure that a minimum of 50% of all targeted Nigerians gain the required knowledge and skills within two years of the program roll-out, with 75% achieving the same in five years.”

Submissions for the essay competition began on July 1, 2025, and will close on August 7, 2025. Participation is open to medical students enrolled in any recognized Nigerian medical school.

Winners at the national level will receive N150,000, N100,000, and N70,000 for first, second, and third place respectively. Seven consolation prizes of N20,000 each will also be awarded. The regional contest will offer N100,000, N70,000, and N50,000 to the top three entries, plus three consolation prizes of N20,000.

All winners will gain membership in the OCI Foundation. Students in South-east medical schools may participate in the national category.
