Gov Eno Urges Akwa Ibom Youths to Embrace Skills, Professional Development

0

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has called on youths across the state to focus on acquiring practical skills and professional development that are essential in today’s job market and critical for solving modern challenges.

Governor Eno made the call at the opening ceremony of the 2025 International Pastors’ Conference held at Insight Bible Church, Uyo. The event, themed “Modelling Christ,” attracted members of the State Executive Council, pastors, and church leaders from within and outside the state.

The Governor described the conference as not just a spiritual gathering but a platform for human capital development, highlighting that there is an urgent need for capable individuals across various sectors.

“The truth is, this is a human capital development programme; and looking at it realistically, the world is in short supply of human capacity,” Eno said. “Whether in ministry, politics, management, and so on, we are really in short supply of capable men.”

Governor Eno stressed that there are existing vacancies in Akwa Ibom State that require specific expertise, and encouraged young people to rise to the challenge. “In our State currently, there are some vacancies to be filled in some specific areas, and our people need to rise up to these needs. We are seriously looking for Special Assistants on Climate Change, Carbon Credit, Blue Economy, and the likes, not some kind of general purpose personnel,” he noted.

The Governor emphasized that the dearth of qualified professionals in critical areas like climate change, carbon management, and the blue economy is affecting government operations and progress. He encouraged the youths to seek knowledge that aligns with the state’s developmental needs.

“There is a dearth of serious capacity in critical areas in the State, and our youths and our people should rise to the occasion by developing themselves in critical skills and professional areas of our present societal needs,” Eno said.

Governor Eno also commended the efforts of Pastor Sylvanus Ukafia, Coordinator of the International Pastors’ Conference, for his consistency in building leadership capacity through the conference since its inception in 1999.

“We thank God for the grace that He has given to Dr. Ukafia and the Insight Bible Church to carry on this Pastors’ Conference since 1999,” Eno stated. “I don’t know of any other church leadership in Akwa Ibom State that has been consistent with pastors’ training and leadership conference like this. So I thank you.”

Speaking further, the Governor urged pastors to prioritize continuous learning and skill development in order to lead their congregations effectively. He noted the essential role of pastors as spiritual and social leaders.

“As Pastors, we need pastoral training because if a pastor is well trained and sound, he would be able to stand the test of time to impact the necessary knowledge and experience on the people,” he said.

“No matter how much a leader, like us, knows, when he comes to a church, he listens to his Pastor. He expects the Pastor to help him in sound counselling, motivation, and superior ideas to function well in his leadership position.”

In his remarks, Pastor Ukafia praised Governor Eno for his unwavering support and commitment to the success of the conference. He described the Governor’s leadership style as exemplary and inspiring.

The five-day conference is designed to provide spiritual renewal, leadership coaching, and strategic insight for church leaders, aligning with national conversations on capacity building, professional growth, and skills acquisition.

AKSG Launches Tree Crops Development Plan to Boost Agriculture

Governor Umo Eno has officially unveiled the Tree Crops Development Programme as a major step towards agricultural advancement and economic diversification in Akwa Ibom State. This move aligns with the Agricultural Revolution pillar of the ARISE Agenda and aims to reposition the state for food security, job creation, and increased export capacity.

The Governor made this announcement during a review meeting with the Akwa Ibom State Agriculture and Food Security Committee on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Government House in Uyo.

He stressed the importance of restoring Akwa Ibom’s position as a leader in oil palm production and highlighted the potential of high-yielding fresh fruit bunches in powering agro-industrial ventures.

“We must take deliberate steps to harness our natural endowments and move beyond dependence on crude oil. The time to scale up our agricultural infrastructure, especially in tree crops, is now,” Governor Eno said.

The plan includes revitalizing and expanding the Dakkada Oil Palm Estate and reviving the Domestic Tree Crop Development Scheme to boost productivity and ensure a steady supply of raw materials for agro-industrial processing.

The Agriculture and Food Security Committee, chaired by Professor Okon Ansa, presented a strategic framework that outlines how the state can unlock its tree crops potential and maximize the use of agricultural and land resources.

Governor Eno instructed the Committee to partner with the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP) to develop a strong business case for immediate execution. He also set a two-week deadline for the submission of a detailed action plan.

“This is not just an agricultural intervention; it is a foundational step in building a sustainable economy. We are laying the groundwork for jobs, exports, and sustainable food systems,” he stated.

NADF Launches All-Season Pilot Farm at Sabke Dam in Katsina

The National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) has taken a major step toward boosting year-round farming in Nigeria by launching a pilot demonstration farm in Katsina State. On Wednesday, NADF signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with several key partners to establish a 50-hectare all-season farm at the Sabke Dam, located in the state’s arid zone.

This historic agreement, which was sealed during a formal event in Katsina, marks a bold move toward transforming dormant water infrastructure into productive agricultural land. It is expected to drive innovation, support sustainable food production, and open up investment opportunities in agribusiness, irrigation farming, and agricultural technology.

The signing ceremony was attended by Katsina State Governor Dr. Dikko Radda, lawmakers, representatives from the Sokoto-Rima River Basin Development Authority (SRRBDA), and private sector stakeholders including OCP Africa and The Infrastructure Bank.

The MoU clearly outlines the roles and responsibilities of all the participating parties—NADF, OCP Africa, the Katsina State Government, and SRRBDA, with each group contributing vital technical, financial, or administrative support to ensure the success of the demonstration farm.

Mohammed Ibrahim, Executive Secretary of NADF, described the launch as the result of months of strategic planning and collaboration aimed at proving the commercial potential of all-season agriculture.

“This initiative is a proof of concept,” said Ibrahim. “It shows how we can utilise our existing dam infrastructure for sustainable, modern farming. This project started with a visit to Katsina. After that, we decided to fund very bankable technical and commercial feasibility studies to explore how this dam could be optimised.”

He further noted that private partners quickly expressed interest, reinforcing the project’s relevance and potential. “While that is ongoing, private partners came to us knocking to say we are also interested in seeing how this place can be optimised. And that is why we are here today,” Ibrahim explained.

The pilot farm will cultivate four key crops: maize, sorghum, cowpea, and soybeans. It will operate as a live demonstration site, covering every stage of the agricultural value chain—from land preparation and seed selection to soil nutrition, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and market access.

“This model farm will showcase everything from proper land preparation through seed genetics, plant nutrition, harvest, post-harvest, and hopefully a go-to market strategy,” Ibrahim said, praising the Katsina State Government for creating an investment-friendly environment.

“We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation, not only for receiving us but for making an investment-ready climate. The Katsina State Government is providing mechanization and extension services for this project,” he added.

OCP Africa, the project’s technical manager, has already completed a full soil mapping of the Sabke Dam irrigable area. Caleb Usoh, General Manager of OCP Africa, highlighted the importance of customised soil treatment.

“OCP has done a complete soil mapping and will now utilise that to showcase how blends should be put where they are in tandem with soil and crop type,” Ibrahim said. Usoh also noted that the farm will serve as a hub for capacity building, especially for smallholder farmers. “The farm serves as a platform for teaching and for training smallholder farmers on good agronomic practices,” he said.

OCP Africa is expected to supply high-quality fertilizers tailored for both the demonstration farm and any out-grower schemes associated with the project. This strategy aligns with high-CPC agriculture keywords such as “custom fertiliser solutions,” “soil mapping technology,” and “precision agriculture.”

The Infrastructure Bank is contributing as both a financial advisor and co-funder. “The Infrastructure Bank is also funding part of the CPPs and other inputs we are bringing,” Ibrahim noted, underlining the importance of diversified funding in agricultural projects.

Ibrahim expressed optimism about the potential impact of the pilot farm, saying, “When the studies are out, we will not only have a reputable bankable study, but we will have had a model on ground to showcase.”

Governor Radda of Katsina State also expressed his full support, stating that the project aligns with the state’s economic and social development goals.

“When the idea of the project was introduced to me, I quickly jumped into it, given the fact that the chain of benefits it will have on the economy of our state and on the livelihood of our people,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of keeping the project operational all year round. “We want to have activities in that project all year round, so that we keep our people busy, we keep our facilities busy, and we optimize the use of the resources spent to build that very big dam that has been left fallow for a very long time.”

Abubakar Malam, Managing Director of SRRBDA, applauded the collaborative effort. “With the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are proud to donate 50 hectares of land… for the development of this project and for food security in the country,” he said.

Hon. Sada, Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources, described the moment as historic and pledged the legislature’s support.

“Today marks one of the most happiest moments for me to see that this dam is being utilized,” he said. “If we allow this pilot project to fail, it is our failure.”

As part of its commitment to transparency and effective project delivery, NADF is also deploying a digital monitoring and evaluation (M&E) platform.

This will ensure proper tracking of resources, process monitoring, and data-driven decision-making to support adaptive management. Such digital tools in agriculture not only improve efficiency but also appeal to investors and development agencies focused on agricultural innovation.

Katsina Governor Signs Deal for 50-Hectare Demonstration Farm

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with four key development partners. The deal will lead to the establishment of a 50-hectare demonstration farm at the Sabke irrigation site in Maiadua Local Government Area.

The initiative brings together the National Agriculture Development Fund, the Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority (SRRBDA), and OCP Africa—an agricultural development organization based in Morocco. The agreement was signed during a high-level event at the Katsina State Government House, attended by federal and state officials.

The delegation was led by Alhaji Sada Soli Jibia, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Water Resources and representative of the Jibia-Kaita Federal Constituency.

Governor Radda expressed deep appreciation to the federal government for selecting Katsina State as the pilot location for this innovative agricultural project.

“This project demonstrates the passion President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has for the people of Katsina State,” Governor Radda stated after the signing. He explained that the project would help develop key infrastructure and maximize the existing potential of the Sabke Dam, all under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund.

Governor Radda assured all stakeholders of the state government’s full commitment to delivering on its responsibilities. “We are confident that our partners will equally deliver on their commitments, enabling us to achieve tangible results by next year and scale up operations after the rainy season,” he said.

The Governor highlighted the importance of making the Sabke Dam functional year-round to engage farmers in consistent agricultural activities. He stressed the need to optimize the significant investments already made in the Dam, which has remained underutilized for years.

Alhaji Sada Soli Jibia also spoke at the event, praising the caliber of organizations involved in the collaboration. “We will not allow this pilot program to fail, given the exceptional capacity of the partners involved,” he said, voicing strong confidence in the initiative’s success.

He hinted at possible expansion plans if the Sabke project proves successful, revealing that additional sites like the Jibia, Zobe, and Dallaje Dams could also benefit from similar irrigation programs in the future. This aligns with national efforts to improve agricultural productivity and reduce reliance on food imports.

Alhaji Muntaka Badaru Jikamshi, Executive Director of Irrigation Services at the SRRBDA, described the Sabke Dam as one of the most important assets under the Authority. He noted that the site had been handed over to the agency by the federal government in 2018 but had not been put to proper use until now.

“The Authority has donated 50 hectares of land for this project development and food security initiative,” Jikamshi said. He expressed hope that under the Renewed Hope Agenda championed by President Tinubu, this effort would mark a turning point for irrigation and farming systems in Katsina and across Nigeria.

Alhaji Muhammad Ibrahim, Executive Secretary of the National Agriculture Development Fund, revealed that his team had previously visited Katsina State on March 18th. During the visit, Governor Radda personally gave them a tour of the Sabke site to carry out a full feasibility study.

According to Ibrahim, the inspection was part of their oversight duties under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund and was aimed at assessing the SRRBDA’s projects for potential optimization in agricultural development.

He applauded Governor Radda’s efforts in providing vital support such as mechanization and agricultural extension services, which are essential for the project’s smooth execution.

“This is not just a project; it’s a step toward real agricultural transformation in Katsina,” Ibrahim added.

Also present at the signing event was Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim Dutsin-ma, the Executive Director of Finance and Administration at the SRRBDA. His presence underscored the importance placed on financial and institutional support for the program’s implementation.

This historic agreement is a key milestone in Governor Radda’s “Building Your Future” agricultural transformation agenda. It also reflects the strength of public-private partnerships in driving long-term, sustainable development across Nigeria’s agriculture sector.

NELFUND Begins Direct Disbursement to Students as Backlogs Are Cleared

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has officially started making direct payments to students through digital banking platforms. This marks a major shift from the earlier plan, which had only considered the option. Recall that NELFUND instructed institutions to upload students details to the Student Loan Application System (SLAS).

In a recent statement, NELFUND confirmed that backlogs of up to eight months have now been cleared. “Students can now receive payments through digital banking platforms, a feature that wasn’t possible before,” the agency stated.

Testimonies have begun to surface, confirming the reality of the scheme. One excited beneficiary shared a message received from their bank:
“Txn: Credit
Ac:2XX..57X
Amt:NGN 160,000.00
Des:R-1283705690/NIGERIA
ED:NELFUN
Date: 09-07-2025 15:54
Bal:NGN 160,006.21″

NELFUND encouraged more students to apply and spread the word. “We fund your education, you focus on your studies, and together, we succeed,” the agency added.

For student applicants whose portal status shows “Verified,” the application has passed the initial checks. However, final disbursement depends on the student’s institution confirming and uploading their data to the system. Once this is done, the status will change to “Disbursed,” and tuition payments will be processed.
