The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is expected to open its 2026 recruitment exercise before year-end after Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, announced a shift to annual recruitment.
Adeniyi made the announcement on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, during a press briefing at the NCS headquarters in Abuja, where he released the final list for the 2024/2025 exercise. He said the next recruitment would commence later in 2026.
With November underway and December approaching, prospective applicants are watching for the advertisement. The previous exercise opened in December 2024, making the timing notable. However, Customs has not confirmed a date for the new application window.
The CG said annual recruitment would replace the irregular system that left Nigerians waiting years for another opportunity. The new cycle is intended to help the Service plan for vacancies caused by retirements and other staff departures while giving applicants more predictable opportunities.
“The 2026 Recruitment Exercise will open later this year, and it is my firm intention that it will be completed within a single calendar year, from advertisement to final list,” Adeniyi said.
He said the NCS had established screening and verification systems during the previous exercise. The existing framework, he explained, would support future applications, candidate assessments and credential checks without having to rebuild the process.
Adeniyi attributed the previous delay to building the recruitment architecture. He said those systems now exist and will not need to be constructed again, suggesting exercises could move more efficiently. He did not promise a number of weeks or months for completion.
The 2026 exercise is expected to be the first under the announced annual recruitment policy. Adeniyi said the change would also help unsuccessful candidates know when another opportunity would arise instead of waiting indefinitely.
However, the announcement is not an invitation to apply. Customs has not released an opening date, deadline, qualification requirements, vacancy numbers or details of portal activation. Applicants should disregard unofficial claims that applications have started.
What applicants should know
Interested Nigerians should monitor the official NCS website and verified communication channels for the recruitment advertisement. The CG confirmed the intention to open the 2026 exercise later this year, but applicants must await the formal notice before applying. Recruitment is free; do not pay anyone promising employment or preferential treatment.
