The Plateau State Government is stepping up efforts to promote innovation in science, technology, and information communication technology (ICT), with a strong focus on discovering and empowering young inventors and digital talents across the state.
This commitment was made clear during a live broadcast of Good Morning Plateau on Peace FM, where Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk, Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, and Hon. Datok Dominic Gwaman, Director General of the Plateau Information Communication and Technology Development Agency (PICTDA), discussed the government’s vision and ongoing projects.
Dr. Shurkuk stated that the government is determined to spot and support innovative young minds across multiple tech and science sectors. “In our drive to transform Plateau into a hub of innovation, revamping and properly utilizing our technical institutions is key,” he said. “The skills acquired by students in these institutions will be instrumental in delivering essential science and technology services across communities.”
He explained that programs have already been held to identify tech-savvy youths, with plans in place to help them develop their ideas and turn their inventions into real-world solutions. These efforts also align with Nigeria’s broader push for STEM education and innovation in youth development.
Hon. Gwaman, speaking on PICTDA’s mission, emphasized collaboration with both public and private sectors, including agriculture, health, and education, to harness ICT for development. “Our goal is to improve lives through the use of technology by ensuring effective communication and the transfer of ICT skills across all sectors,” he said.
Gwaman also revealed that over 5,000 Plateau residents have been trained in digital skills under the Federal Government’s Tech-Talent Program, which was launched in 2023 with the aim of equipping 3 million Nigerians with digital skills. He noted that women formed the majority of those trained in the state, signaling a growing inclusiveness in the tech sector.
Both officials encouraged young people in Plateau to take full advantage of ongoing opportunities in ICT training, tech development, and entrepreneurship. They stressed the importance of youth involvement in achieving digital transformation, job creation, and sustainable development.
