The Rivers State Ministry of Health has launched an immediate investigation into allegations of corruption at the Rivers State College of Nursing Sciences, following complaints involving some tutors and administrators. The development was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh.

According to the statement, the allegations include unauthorised payments demanded from students for project topic approvals, the sale of examination questions and marking schemes, as well as bribery in exchange for guaranteed examination passes. The Ministry described the claims as serious and capable of undermining trust in the state’s health training institutions.

Dr. Oreh said an independent investigative panel has been constituted to look into the matter and submit a comprehensive report to the Ministry of Health. She explained that the panel will be chaired by Prof. Chizindu Alikor, with members including Dr. Maria Krukrubo, Dr. Golden Owhonda, Mrs. Sotonye Isokariari, and Dr. Vincent Wachukwu. Mrs. Daima Martins Nwigbo will serve as the secretary of the panel.

“The panel has been charged with the responsibility of investigating these allegations and forwarding a comprehensive report of their findings to the Ministry,” the statement said. It added that an audit of all project-related fees charged to students over the past academic year will be carried out.

The Ministry advised students and the general public that all school-related payments must be made only through approved official channels of the Rivers State College of Nursing Sciences. “The Ministry of Health has zero tolerance for fraud, extortion and other such practices,” Dr. Oreh stated.

She noted that the alleged infractions are not being taken lightly, as they threaten the principles of equity, justice, transparency and professionalism, and could affect the quality of training and clinical care. The Commissioner also called on anyone with useful information or evidence to assist the investigation to come forward, assuring them of protection, and warning that anyone found guilty will be held accountable and face the consequences of their actions.
