Kwara State Government has concluded plans to host a STEM-focused science exhibition competition aimed at helping secondary school students develop practical solutions to challenges in energy, security and other critical sectors.
The competition, scheduled to hold from May 13 to 20, 2026, will take place at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, Ilorin, with daily activities beginning by 10:00am.
The initiative is being organised by the Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development as part of efforts to strengthen STEM education across public secondary schools in the state.
According to a statement issued by the ministry’s Press Secretary, Peter Amogbonjaye, the programme is targeted at students in Kwara Central Senatorial District and is expected to promote innovation, critical thinking and practical learning among participants.
Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, said the exhibition is designed to move students beyond classroom theories and encourage them to create solutions that can address real societal problems.
“The idea is to get our students to think critically and apply what they learn in classrooms to solve real-life challenges, especially in areas like energy and security,” he said.
Olohungbebe explained that participating students would work on projects linked to areas such as power generation, environmental sustainability, healthcare delivery, food security and national security.
He noted that the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration has continued to prioritise reforms in education and innovation-driven learning to prepare students for future opportunities in science and technology.
“The government is committed to building a system where young people are equipped with the skills needed to compete globally in science and technology,” the commissioner added.
He further stated that the competition would help students improve their research abilities, teamwork and problem-solving skills while exposing them to innovation-based learning.
The exhibition is also expected to serve as a platform for discovering young talents capable of developing practical solutions to Nigeria’s energy and security challenges.
Student projects at the event will cover thematic areas including energy solutions, security innovation, environmental protection, healthcare innovation, clean water and sanitation, as well as food security through science and technology.
