The Lagos State Government has disclosed that more than N504 million was disbursed to 4,394 students through bursaries and scholarships as part of efforts to strengthen tertiary education and improve students’ welfare across the state.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, announced this during the ministerial press briefing marking the second term of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
According to Sule, the Lagos State Scholarship Board introduced new support initiatives, including a Special Scholarship for Inclusion designed for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable residents in the state.
He said the state government is focusing on improving access to quality education while positioning Lagos-owned tertiary institutions for global competitiveness.
“The government remains committed to supporting students and building institutions that can compete globally while producing graduates equipped to solve local and international challenges,” Sule said.
The commissioner explained that the state also expanded digital learning infrastructure across tertiary institutions and upgraded transportation facilities to improve mobility for students and lecturers.
He added that Lagos strengthened partnerships with institutions in the United States, United Kingdom and Malaysia to improve academic standards, research opportunities and international collaboration.
Sule further noted that the Lagos State College of Nursing and the Lagos State College of Health Technology recorded improvements in hostel accommodation, ICT facilities, healthcare education and entrepreneurship training during the review period.
On adult education, he said the Lagos State Agency for Mass Education increased stipends for facilitators, expanded vocational training centres and strengthened literacy programmes in different communities across the state.
The Lagos State Library Board also recorded increased readership and expanded solar-powered library projects alongside reading advocacy campaigns in public secondary schools.
Nigeria Startup News (NSN) reports that the latest scholarship disbursement highlights Lagos State’s growing investment in education, digital infrastructure and human capital development as competition for quality tertiary education continues to rise across Nigeria.
