Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has announced a N1 billion empowerment package targeted at supporting 2,000 small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) across the 17 local government areas of Abia State.

Kalu disclosed that the intervention is designed to provide direct financial support to businesses operating within communities across the state, with each beneficiary expected to receive about N500,000. He described the programme as a deliberate effort to strengthen grassroots entrepreneurship and expand economic opportunities for young business owners.

According to him, the empowerment package is aimed at boosting local productivity, sustaining existing businesses, and encouraging the growth of new enterprises within Abia State. “This N1 billion empowerment initiative is structured to reach 2,000 SMEs across all 17 local government areas of the state,” Kalu said.

He explained that the spread across all local governments was intentional, to ensure fairness and inclusiveness, noting that small businesses remain the backbone of the local economy. “Each selected business will receive about N500,000 to help them scale operations, stabilize cash flow, and improve service delivery,” he stated.

Kalu added that the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to reduce unemployment and support wealth creation at the community level. He said SMEs play a critical role in job creation, especially for young people, and supporting them directly would have a multiplier effect on local economies.

The Deputy Speaker noted that beneficiaries would be drawn from different sectors, reflecting the diversity of businesses operating in Abia State. He said the focus is on practical support that can make an immediate impact rather than short-term relief.

“This empowerment package is not just about funding, it is about giving small business owners the capacity to grow, employ more people, and contribute meaningfully to economic development across the state,” Kalu said.

He further stated that the programme is expected to stimulate economic activities within markets, neighborhoods, and business clusters across Abia, adding that supporting SMEs remains a sustainable path to inclusive growth.

Kalu assured that the implementation process would be structured to ensure transparency and effective distribution across the 17 local government areas. He emphasized that the goal is to make sure the funds reach genuine business owners who are actively contributing to the state’s economy.

He said the N1 billion empowerment package reflects a broader commitment to supporting entrepreneurship and strengthening the economic base of Abia State through targeted SME interventions.

The development was disclosed during the presentation of a symbolic cheque to beneficiaries at a ceremony held in Gboko.

The Head of Social Performance of Dangote Cement Plc, Gboko Plant, Dr. Johnson Kor, said the company expanded the scholarship scheme to accommodate more students across its host communities. He explained that the decision reflects the company’s continued focus on education as a tool for long-term community development and social stability in areas where it operates.

“Our CSR initiatives are therefore not one-off gestures, but long-term social investments designed to create lasting impact,” he added. He urged beneficiaries to use the funds prudently and strictly for educational purposes, noting that the scholarship process is managed transparently by a duly constituted committee to ensure accountability.

AMAC Bans Cash Payments, Launches Fully Automated Revenue System

The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has announced a ban on cash payments and unauthorized revenue collections, effective from January 1, 2026, as it moves to fully automate its revenue system. The policy was unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja during a press conference addressed by the AMAC Chairman, Hon. Christopher Maikalangu, who described the reform as a firm step to block revenue leakages, strengthen transparency, and improve service delivery across the council.

Maikalangu said the council could no longer tolerate weaknesses created by manual revenue processes, noting that the automation marks the end of an era. “For too long, our revenue system has been undermined by manual processes that created loopholes. By the grace of God, that era ends today,” he declared.

Under the new arrangement, all revenues due to AMAC must be paid only through the official AMAC Smart Tax platform at amactax.ng/payment. Payments made on the platform will go directly into the council’s central Single Account, eliminating cash handling by officials. “We are eliminating cash payments. No official is authorised to collect cash. Every naira paid will go straight into the council’s single account,” he said.

To enforce compliance, Maikalangu announced plans to inaugurate a Special Tribunal Monitoring Task Force in early 2026. He explained that the task force will work alongside environmental cadets and enforcement officers to monitor business districts and communities. “Any individual or business that attempts to bypass this automated system will be apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” he warned.

The chairman explained that taxpayers are expected to use amacsmarttax.ng through a mobile application or web browser to complete payments and immediately generate electronic receipts. He cautioned residents to be vigilant against fraud, saying, “If anyone asks you to pay cash or into a private bank account, report it immediately. Any account outside AMAC Smart Tax is fake.”

Maikalangu disclosed that AMAC has generated over ₦5 billion in revenue from January to date, but said the amount falls short of the council’s actual capacity. He pointed to areas such as Maitama, Asokoro, Gwarinpa, Nyanya, Karshi, Dei-Dei and the Abuja airport axis as zones with strong revenue potential. “With the number of hotels, banks and estates in AMAC, there should be no excuse for revenue shortfalls. That is why we are taking these tough decisions to end leakages,” he said.

He added that although some revenue racketeers had been arrested and prosecuted in the past, enforcement would now be tighter, with mobile courts empowered to seal premises of defaulting businesses. “Any hotel or business that refuses to comply will be taken to court or sealed. We will also expose defaulters publicly,” he stated.

Special provisions have been made for market traders who do not own smartphones, allowing them to pay directly into the designated AMAC account at any Zenith Bank branch. The chairman also warned residents and business owners to ignore all demand notices issued before 2026. “Do not pay any demand notice issued before January 2026. Wait for the official council notice directing you to AMAC Smart Tax. If you pay elsewhere, you will pay twice,” he cautioned.

Maikalangu said the automation is essential for funding education, healthcare, and infrastructure across AMAC’s wards statewide programmes.
