Nigeria, UDST to Strengthen TVET Training and Innovation

1

Nigeria’s plan to expand its Technical and Vocational Education and Training system has taken a major step forward with a new partnership between the country and the University of Doha for Science and Technology. The collaboration will focus on entrepreneurship and innovation, along with advanced technical training that will help strengthen key areas of the nation’s TVET ecosystem. Maruf Olatunji Alausa shared this update after accompanying the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, to Doha for the WISE Education Summit, where he also visited UDST and met with President Dr. Salem Al-Naemi.

Alausa described the visit as an important moment in the push to modernize Nigeria’s skills development sector. He noted that he was impressed by UDST’s Certificate School, which he said is “deeply focused on hands-on, competency-based learning and internationally accredited technical programmes.” According to him, the school’s strong focus on practical training, workplace readiness, and industry-aligned certifications aligns with the reforms being pursued in Nigeria.

He announced that Nigeria will be partnering with UDST in several areas, including advanced technical training for Nigerian instructors in plumbing, welding, HVAC, electrical installation, and solar PV technology. He added that the partnership will also support efforts to improve Nigeria’s quality assurance systems to ensure local TVET qualifications meet global standards. Another major area of collaboration will be entrepreneurship and innovation, with opportunities for young Nigerians to access incubation programmes for micro-enterprises, scalable ventures, and high-growth innovators.

Alausa said the partnership reflects Nigeria’s commitment to building a skilled and globally competitive workforce. He stated, “Our youth are ready. Nigeria is ready. And together, we will deliver the strong TVET system our nation deserves.”

Nigeria Targets Conflict Zones for Fodder Hubs to Drive Livestock Growth

0

The Federal Government has restated that the Ministry of Livestock Development’s growing partnerships and investments are practical steps that will soon bring clear benefits to Nigerians. This assurance was given during the maiden National Council on Livestock Development, which opened in Yola, Adamawa State, on Monday, 24 November 2025. The event placed special focus on the message delivered in the keynote address, where the Special Adviser to the President on Livestock Reforms, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said Nigeria must turn conflict drivers into economic opportunities by reorganising farmer–pastoralist corridors into structured fodder production hubs that will engage youth farmers and herders.

Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, explained that the inauguration of the council signals a new era for the livestock sector built on collaboration, innovation, and private-sector-led growth. She noted that the sector is moving into a phase where new ideas and modern systems will shape productivity, investment, and long-term stability.

Speaking at the opening session, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, highlighted progress made by the Ministry since its establishment 16 months ago. He said several bilateral and private-sector engagements have matured into concrete expressions of interest, with companies preparing targeted investments across important value chains such as dairy, beef, fodder, small ruminants, animal breeding, poultry, piggery, and animal identification.

According to him, “We will see the physical manifestation of these engagements in a few months,” stressing that development partners are already supporting dairy development, peacebuilding programmes, and climate-smart livestock production. He added that these efforts bring real hope for pastoralists, farmers, and rural households who have waited for better incomes, safer grazing conditions, and stronger animal health systems.

Maiha further explained that the Council was created to coordinate national strategies, strengthen collaboration, attract new investments, and position the livestock sector as a major contributor to economic diversification, food security, peacebuilding, and rural development.

He said the Ministry aims to support the transition of Nigeria’s livestock industry from a conflict-prone, traditional system into a modern and sustainable enterprise capable of expanding its contribution to the national economy from the current 32 billion dollars to 74 billion dollars by 2035, guided by the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy and the National Livestock Master Plan.

He encouraged all stakeholders to work together and make the livestock sector a “beacon of prosperity, a source of national pride, shared progress, peace, and food security for all Nigerians.”

In a goodwill message, the Governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, represented by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Kaletapwa George Farauta, described livestock as an important pillar of the state’s economy. He recalled that Adamawa created a dedicated Ministry for Livestock Development more than 20 years ago. He appealed for support to expand the state’s Pilot Ranch Project under the National Livestock Transformation Plan, saying Adamawa has remained a leading example in demonstrating workable ranching systems.

Goodwill messages also came from the Chairman, Senate Committee on Livestock Development, Senator Musa Mustapha; Chairman, House Committee on Livestock, Hon. Tasir Olawale Raji; Adamawa State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Alhaji Tijani Maksha; and several development partners. After the session, dignitaries visited an exhibition area displaying livestock products, innovations, and services.

The federal government says it has generated 300 per cent more revenue than expected in the hospitality and tourism sector, marking a major boost for the industry. Abisoye Fagade, the director-general of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism in Abuja, said the sector recorded significant growth last year. He made this known at an event organised by Style De Vie, a private-sector company focused on strengthening cultural and economic ties between African countries.

Mr Fagade explained that the hospitality and tourism sector was now one of the biggest contributors to employment in the country, second only to agriculture. He stated that the institute was not only focused on generating revenue but also on creating services, adding value, and providing a supportive platform for businesses to thrive. He called for increased investment to drive further development. According to him, “The body language of our government is changing to tourism; the agenda is focusing more on tourism as a sustainable replacement for oil. Tourism in Nigeria is a social bitcoin, if you do not catch up on time now, you will regret that later.”

Rebecca Tabe, the creative director of Style De Vie, said the event aimed to boost investment partnerships among African nations. She noted that the gathering was designed to connect investors, country representatives, and business owners to create business platforms and open up investment opportunities across the continent. Ms Tabe encouraged Nigerians in the diaspora to invest in the country and the wider African region to support sustainable growth.

The Tunisian ambassador to Nigeria, Mohsen Antit, described the event as an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange ideas and understand the unique strengths of different African countries, especially in trade and the economy. Mr Antit said the programme would enhance cultural and tourism relations across the continent. He also called for stronger collaboration between Tunisia and Nigeria in areas such as agriculture, trade, and tourism.

MTN Unveils Nigeria PachiPanda Challenge 2025 for Young Innovators

MTN Nigeria, in partnership with the WorldWide Fund through its local partner, the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, on Monday unveiled the Nigeria PachiPanda Challenge 2025, an initiative aimed at empowering young people to promote environmental sustainability across the country. Nigeria Startup News reports that the challenge is designed to give young people the opportunity to develop innovative and long-term solutions to pressing environmental issues while also encouraging fresh ideas that support sustainability in Nigeria. The initiative forms part of the wider Africa PachiPanda Challenge, which seeks to stimulate and champion creative solutions addressing urgent environmental challenges across the continent.

The Founder and Managing Consultant at ResourcePRO Ltd., Chinwe Udo-Davis, explained that the initiative was created to equip young people with the tools they need to build practical solutions for environmental problems. She noted that the programme would empower African youth and youth-led SMEs to develop innovative and sustainable solutions that address major environmental challenges affecting their communities. Udo-Davis urged young entrepreneurs to be clear about the value they offer and to find ways to differentiate their products or services so they can remain competitive and attract customers.

She emphasised that the marketplace operates on an exchange of value and that customers only pay for products or services that deliver clear benefits or solve specific problems. According to her, “The only reason anyone will give you money is because you are giving them value. If your solution does not put real value into the hands of your customer, they will not pay for it. Whether you are building a commercial or social enterprise.” She added that entrepreneurs must be able to communicate the core benefits of their products, whether through improved quality, reliability, better pricing, faster delivery, or strong customer service. She stated that customers are often willing to pay more if the value offered is higher.

Udo-Davis explained that while many businesses worry about competition, differentiation in business models and approach can allow companies to stand out even when operating in the same sector. She also highlighted the importance of storytelling and effective communication, describing it as a crucial skill for founders, especially when pitching to investors or taking part in accelerator programmes. She noted that many entrepreneurs assume their ideas are strong enough to speak for themselves, but visibility and strong narrative-building are key to drawing support and investment.

She shared her personal experience at a pan-African pitch event in Nairobi, where overcoming her fear of public speaking helped her team secure a 150,000-dollar grant, a moment she described as transformative for her business. She explained that communication skills remain essential during fundraising, product promotion, and investor engagement, and encouraged entrepreneurs to seek learning platforms such as Toastmasters to improve.

Udo-Davis urged innovators, especially those working in climate-focused and SDG-related sectors, to communicate clearly about the purpose, social impact, and unique strengths of their solutions. She stated, “Your ability to clearly articulate your value, uniqueness and impact is just as important as the solution you are building.”

During the interactive masterclass session, the President of the Recyclers Association of Nigeria, Harold Okonoboh, encouraged participants to explore opportunities within the recycling sector. He advised them to begin as middlemen, explaining that this would help them understand the value chain before making significant investments. According to him, this entry point offers new participants a way to engage actively in the sector without dealing with heavy capital costs. It also helps them identify the materials recyclers need and how to source them efficiently from their communities.

Okonoboh urged participants to gain hands-on experience by working with established recycling companies, explaining that learning directly from industry operators would help young innovators avoid costly mistakes. He described Nigeria’s recycling ecosystem as fragmented but noted that the gaps create opportunities for innovation, especially in digital technology for waste collection and in the local fabrication of recycling machinery. He added that local artisans have the technical skills required to produce some recycling components, although improvements in design and precision are needed to meet industry standards.

He also highlighted the role of the Recyclers Association of Nigeria in guiding private operators and working with regulators on policies that influence the circular economy. He reminded participants that staying informed about regulations is important to avoid investments that may be affected by future restrictions. “Staying connected with regulatory bodies is important for anyone entering the sector to avoid investments in areas that may be restricted in the future. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse,” he said.

Okonoboh assured the participants of ongoing support and expressed readiness to guide those who wish to pursue opportunities within the recycling value chain.
