NNPC foundation trains 2000 farmers in Gombe

The NNPC Foundation has completed the Northern phase of its Vulnerable Farmers Training Programme, empowering over 2,000 smallholder farmers from the Gombe cluster, which includes Gombe, Adamawa, and Taraba states. The initiative is part of a nationwide agricultural empowerment project aimed at boosting food production, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and improving rural livelihoods.

Speaking at the closing ceremony in Kaltungo, Gombe State, the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation Ltd/Gte, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, represented by Dr. Bala T. David, said the intervention reflects the Foundation’s commitment to national food security and grassroots development. “This is more than just a training exercise, it is a movement to empower communities, restore confidence in agriculture, and equip farmers with modern tools for resilience and profitability,” she stated.

According to Arukwe, the 2,000 beneficiaries received practical training in climate-smart agriculture, agribusiness management, post-harvest handling, and market access strategies. The programme also included mentorship to help participants apply the new knowledge directly to their farms and agribusiness ventures, ensuring long-term impact.

She explained that the training was specifically designed to tackle major challenges faced by smallholder farmers, such as post-harvest losses, poor soil management, and limited access to markets. By addressing these issues, the Foundation aims to enhance sustainability and support increased food output in the Northeast region, aligning with national efforts to reduce food inflation and strengthen local production.

“The Gombe cluster is one of the 17 clusters nationwide where the Foundation trained a total of 15,000 vulnerable farmers in two phases,” Arukwe added. The initiative is expected to contribute to economic stability, job creation, and rural development, while encouraging young people to reconsider agriculture as a viable source of income and self-reliance through agribusiness opportunities.

FG, UNICEF to give nutrition support to 300000 children

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has announced that the government is collaborating with both local and international partners to improve the quality of diet for vulnerable children across Nigeria.

According to the ministry, a special intervention programme is ongoing in 20 high-risk states aimed at providing Small Quantity Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements (SQ-LNS) to about 300,000 children who are currently at risk of malnutrition in different communities across the country.

The SQ-LNS, described as a fortified lipid-based paste or spread, is designed to complement the diet of children between six and 23 months with essential nutrients. The supplement is intended to help prevent micronutrient deficiencies and stunting, which are major public health concerns in Nigeria.

Experts say the SQ-LNS for children contains protein and lipid macronutrients as well as 24 micronutrients, including 13 vitamins and 11 minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium.

Speaking in an interview with THISDAY, the Director of Nutrition Information System, Dr Lekan Olubajo, explained that the capacity training initiative is targeted at protecting children, especially those under five years of age, from malnourishment.

He said, “Malnutrition and wasting are about 40 percent right now in the country. We have under-five children who are malnourished, and the malnutrition is becoming one of the public health challenges in Nigeria.”

Olubajo further stated that the government is taking practical steps to tackle this issue, particularly among children aged between six and 23 months.

He explained that the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Evidence Action, and other relevant stakeholders, has developed an SQ-LNS training manual to ensure standardisation in the training of healthcare practitioners nationwide.

“The first stage of the train-the-trainers programme is being carried out at the national level. There will also be state-level and facility-level training where health workers will be equipped to administer these commodities to the children,” he said.

According to him, “We are doing a training of trainers on this commodity to address malnutrition in Nigeria. We have 70 persons here representing both partners and 20 states. We have two people from each of these states, and they will go back and cascade the training to the local communities.”

Olubajo added that the programme has been carefully designed to build the capacity of all health workers involved in micronutrient deficiency control in Nigeria, both at the facility and community levels.

“This will significantly contribute to the reduction of micronutrient deficiencies among children aged six to 23 months and the overall reduction of anaemia and high mortality in the country,” he said.

Country Director of Evidence Action, one of the implementing partners, Mr Tope Ogunbi, said the distribution of SQ-LNS is a new intervention. He explained that most health workers across states are yet to receive proper training on how to administer the supplement.

“So, the reason why we’re here on Monday is to train a pool of national trainers who are drawn from the Ministry of Health, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and other agencies, ministries, and parastatals at the national level,” he said.

Lagos Govt encourages farmers to get agricultural insurance

0

The Lagos State Government has called on farmers across the state to embrace agricultural insurance as a vital risk management tool to secure the long-term sustainability of their farms. The appeal was made by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, during a two-day capacity-building workshop organised by the Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority (LSADA) for selected farmers under the National Programme for Food Security (NPFS). The event took place at the Fresh Food Produce Hub, Idi-Oro, Mushin, Lagos, on 9th October 2025.

Represented by the Director of Agribusiness, Mrs. Aramide Ganzalo, the Commissioner explained that the training theme, “Strengthening Farming Communities Through Financial Management, Loan Repayment, and Agricultural Insurance: Transitioning from Simple to Mechanised Farming,” reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to empowering farmers with the right tools for productivity, resilience, and business growth.

“Agricultural insurance is designed for the benefit of farmers. Over the years, many have experienced significant losses, and the government has had to step in with compensation,” Olusanya said. “Rather than relying solely on government aid, insurance allows farmers to recover losses through insurance providers. We insure our cars, not because we expect accidents, but as a safeguard; farming should be treated the same way.”

She further revealed that in the near future, proof of agricultural insurance could become a requirement for accessing government support. “While it’s not mandatory yet, we are strongly encouraging farmers to embrace this safety net. It’s better to be insured and secure than to be vulnerable in the face of unforeseen events,” she added.

In her welcome address, LSADA’s Coordinating Director, Mrs. Aderonke Toju-Tubi, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural value chain and supporting farmers in all parts of Lagos State. “This training is focused on building the capacity of our farmers, enhancing financial literacy, and encouraging sustainable practices through mechanisation,” she said. “Educating farmers on financial management, timely loan repayment, and agricultural insurance will not only sustain credit schemes but also build trust between farmers and financial institutions. These are key pillars for a resilient agricultural financing ecosystem.”

Highlighting the broader vision, Toju-Tubi added: “Farming remains the backbone of our economy and the lifeline of our rural communities. This forum allows us to reflect, strategise, and empower farmers to thrive in today’s evolving agricultural landscape.”

Also speaking at the event, the NPFS Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Mrs. Oluwatosin Ganzalo, discussed the challenges farmers face in accessing credit facilities from commercial banks. She noted that the state government now channels funds directly to farmer clusters under various enterprises. “These funds are used by the clusters and then returned to the apex body for redistribution. So far, over 5,000 farmers have benefited from the programme in recent years, and about 370 participants are currently being trained,” she said.

FG warns ASUU over planned strike, cites no work no pay rule

The Federal Government of Nigeria has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reconsider its planned industrial strike, stressing that constructive dialogue remains the most effective and sustainable way to resolve all outstanding issues in the country’s tertiary education sector.

In a joint statement issued in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, stated that the Federal Government has made a comprehensive offer to the union and is currently awaiting ASUU’s official response.

According to the statement, the government’s proposal addresses the union’s major concerns, including working conditions, institutional governance, and staff welfare. The Ministers revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has approved a robust Teaching Allowance to reflect the true value of academic work and motivate lecturers across public universities.

“All matters relating to the review of conditions of service have been duly addressed, except those within the jurisdiction of individual university governing councils, which are actively being handled. The Federal Government remains open and committed to continued engagement with ASUU once their formal response to the offer is received,” the statement read.

They noted that the government has demonstrated sincerity through prompt policy responses and financial interventions in the education sector. However, ASUU has not reciprocated the same commitment and appears determined to proceed with the planned strike despite the pending offer and ongoing talks.

The Ministers reaffirmed that President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to the welfare of Nigerian lecturers and the stability of the university system. They stated that ongoing reforms in the sector are built on fairness, accountability, and institutional strengthening to ensure sustainable academic excellence.

While restating respect for university autonomy, the Ministers clarified that certain parts of ASUU’s demands—particularly those involving internal governance, appointments, and promotions—are statutory responsibilities of university governing councils. They urged the union to allow these issues to be handled at the institutional level according to existing laws and regulations.

They also reminded the union that the “No Work, No Pay” principle remains a standing provision of Nigerian labour law, warning that the Federal Government will enforce it if ASUU proceeds with the strike.

“While government remains committed to peaceful dialogue, it will equally enforce existing laws to protect the integrity of our education system and ensure accountability,” the statement warned.

The Ministers assured Nigerians that the government remains open to constructive engagement with ASUU and other stakeholders. They stressed that consistent government interventions show a clear commitment to revitalising universities, improving staff welfare, and maintaining uninterrupted academic calendars.

“The government has shown sincerity and commitment through engagements and policy actions. We are confident that, with continued dialogue, every legitimate concern can be addressed and resolved without shutting down our campuses. Our students must remain in school,” they added.

“The future of our children and the stability of our universities must take priority over disputes. The Federal Government remains open to discussion and is ready to work with ASUU to consolidate the gains already achieved in staff welfare, infrastructure, and institutional reforms,” the Ministers concluded.

However, in a counter statement earlier, ASUU insisted that nothing concrete had been done to halt the implementation of its resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike following the expiration of the 14-day notice issued on 28th September 2025.

“Compatriots of the Press, it is evident that nothing concrete has been done to halt the implementation of the resolution reached by ASUU-NEC to embark on a two-week warning strike following the expiration of the 14-day notice issued on 28th September 2025,” the union stated.

Accordingly, ASUU directed all its branches to withdraw their services effective from midnight on Monday, 13th October 2025.

“This warning strike, as resolved at the last NEC meeting, shall be total and comprehensive,” the union declared.

Peter Obi takes Nigeria’s economic situation to God in Vatican pilgrimage

0

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, Peter Obi, has shared details of his spiritual journey to the Vatican City, where he and his wife offered prayers for Nigeria’s unity, peace, and good leadership.

Obi, who recently returned from a two-day trip to the United States, explained that his visit to Rome was part of a personal pilgrimage marking the Jubilee Year, a Catholic event celebrated every twenty-five years. He said the pilgrimage was an opportunity for reflection and intercession for Nigeria, especially as the country continues to face economic hardship and social division.

“After my 2-day trip to the United States – where I addressed the Friendship Club on Saturday, 4 October, and spoke at the 1st Ubuntu African Youth Assembly in Washington on Sunday, 5 October – I departed that same night for Rome, arriving on 6th October to join my dearest wife, who was already in Rome waiting for me,” Obi said.

According to him, the Jubilee Year presented a chance to pray for forgiveness and renewal. “My dearest wife and I chose to dedicate our prayers to Nigeria. With hearts full of gratitude, we thanked God that, despite our differences and the many challenges faced over sixty-five years of independence, He has kept us together as one nation – a rare and profound blessing for which we remain deeply thankful,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor said they prayed for divine mercy and for the emergence of selfless and competent leaders. “We sought forgiveness for our national transgressions and implored God to intervene in the suffering of the Nigerian people. We prayed for the injection into our political landscape selfless and compassionate leaders whose hearts He would touch – leaders who would be truthful in word and deed, altruistic in service, and committed to using public resources for the common good,” he stated.

Obi added that their prayers also focused on leaders who possess competence, capacity, character, and commitment to the welfare of all citizens. “Leaders who understand that they were not created to live in isolation but in community with others, and must ensure that actions are for the benefit of the community,” he said.

During their pilgrimage, Obi and his wife visited several significant sites in Rome. “On Tuesday, the 7th of October, as part of our pilgrimage, we passed through three Holy Doors of the four major Papal Basilicas in Rome, praying at each that God would open the door of His mercy to Nigeria,” he said.

“At St. Mary Major, we prayed, passed through the Holy Door, and reflected at the grave of the late Pope Francis. From there, we journeyed to the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, where Cardinal James Harvey warmly received us, led us through the Holy Door, and shared the basilica’s rich history and the deep significance of the Jubilee Year,” he added.

Obi said the pilgrimage continued to the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran, dedicated to Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. “Together with other pilgrims, we passed through the Holy Door and joined in prayer. We then proceeded to the Scala Sancta – the Holy Steps which Jesus ascended before Pontius Pilate – where we prayed with profound reverence, completing a day of deep spiritual reflection at some of Rome’s most sacred sites,” he said.

The former presidential candidate also recounted his experience at St. Peter’s Basilica, where he attended the Papal General Audience. “On Wednesday the 8th of October, we rose early for the Papal General Audience at St. Peter’s Basilica, where we were blessed to hear the Catechesis of His Holiness on hope, perseverance, and steadfast faith in times of hardship,” Obi noted.

“Afterwards, we passed through the final Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica, praying and reflecting deeply on God’s mercy, thus completing our pilgrimage through the four doors with hearts filled with gratitude and renewed faith,” he added.

Obi confirmed that he and his wife were also received in audience by His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV. “At St. Peter’s, we were privileged to be received in audience by His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex, to whom we humbly appealed for prayers for our beloved country, Nigeria,” he said.

He also mentioned meeting several Nigerian pilgrims who shared in the prayers for the nation. “Along the way, we met several Nigerian pilgrims: men and women of faith whose faces shone with quiet hope. Together, we renewed our trust in God’s divine mercy and in the promise of a renewed and better Nigeria,” Obi said.

He concluded by urging Nigerians not to lose faith but to take responsibility for national progress. “I believe fervently in the power and providence of God. Yet, as we lift our nation before Him in prayer, we must not surrender to fatalism. Faith does not absolve us of responsibility; rather, it calls us to action,” he stated.

“As Nigerians, we must each continue to do our part – with honesty, diligence, and love – for the healing and progress of our country,” he said.

FHA boss confirms no state left behind in Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda

FHA Managing Director, Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, has taken President Bola Tinubu’s message to the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, assuring them that the state will not be left behind in the ongoing implementation of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

During the visit to the Council in Ado-Ekiti, the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to the growth and development of Ekiti State through national infrastructure and economic projects aimed at improving housing, transportation, and energy.

Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, who serves as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Housing Authority, told the monarchs that the current administration is working to ensure that every part of Nigeria benefits from ongoing projects. “We also felt that before Mr. President came, that project was already being talked about, but now the project is ongoing, even extending to the states. Two days ago, we got our commercial licence for domestic flights into the state,” he said.

He assured the traditional rulers that President Tinubu remains dedicated to bringing development to all regions of the country. “In the past, it used to be about development. Now we have Southwest Development, which goes to the grassroots of all regions in Nigeria,” Ojo added.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for the monarchs to present key requests to the Federal Government. They called for the extension of the railway system to Ekiti State to boost commerce, enhance connectivity, and support the local economy. “All of us cannot go elsewhere. I think our sons and citizens at the centre should please help us to ensure the rail system also passes through the state. Let us all work together to pool resources and capacity to increase the volume of energy allocated to the state,” one of the monarchs appealed.

The Chairman of the Council, Oba Ajibade Alabi, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold economic reforms, noting that though the process has been challenging, positive signs of recovery are already visible. “There are a lot of innovations as a result of this exposure, and we are beginning to see the effect,” he said.

The visit concluded with renewed calls for stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and traditional institutions to promote development, peace, and stability across Ekiti State and the wider Southwest region.
