The Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, on Monday, 1st September 2025, attended the opening ceremony of the Africa Food Systems Forum held in Dakar, Senegal.

The forum served as a high-level continental platform that brought together Heads of State, Ministers, policymakers, development partners, private sector leaders, and experts to deliberate on strategies to accelerate the transformation of Africa’s food systems.

Nigeria’s participation, led by Senator Kyari, highlights the country’s commitment to strengthening regional collaboration in achieving sustainable food security, agricultural innovation, and inclusive growth for farmers and stakeholders across the agricultural value chain.

Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized the Federal Government’s drive to ensure that Nigeria contributes meaningfully to Africa’s agricultural development.

“The Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is determined to build resilient and competitive food systems that will not only feed our nation but also contribute to Africa’s collective prosperity,” Senator Kyari stated.

NADF moves to woo investors to unlock capital for Africa’s agri-food markets

The National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) has positioned itself as a key driver of private investment in Africa’s agricultural infrastructure. This was during a high-level roundtable on the Africa Food Corridors Initiative in Dakar, Senegal. The event was hosted by AGRA Africa Board Chair, Hailemariam Dessalegn, and the UK Minister for Africa, Collins of Highbury. Discussions focused on mobilising support for the transformative ‘Project X’, designed to boost continental and global food trade connectivity.

NADF Executive Secretary Mohammed A. Ibrahim underlined the Fund’s role in creating the right conditions for private capital inflows. “The NADF is committed to de-risking private sector investment to unlock crucial capital for Africa’s agri-food markets,” he said.

He explained that the Fund is structured to provide financial guarantees and technical support. These measures are aimed at making large-scale projects more attractive to both domestic and international investors.

Mr Ibrahim also spoke on the importance of collaboration. “We must strengthen cooperation between development finance institutions, commercial banks, and governmental agencies to build commercially viable agricultural infrastructure,” he stated.

He added that innovative financing mechanisms are essential for constructing resilient food systems. Such systems, he noted, would not only meet Africa’s growing domestic needs but also expand trade opportunities globally.

Senator Kyari and other participants also underscored the importance of aligning public and private financing to ensure sustainable growth in Africa’s agricultural sector.

The roundtable positioned the NADF as a central player in driving agricultural development, food security, and sustainable investment across the continent.

Akwa Ibom Gov Says Citizens Don’t Need Connections to Access N31bn 2026 Grants

0

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his commitment to running a people-oriented government that is free from the influence of godfatherism.

Speaking with Government House Correspondents, the Governor said every citizen of Akwa Ibom State will have equal access to the Government portal for the various grants provided by his administration. He emphasized that the upcoming 2026 empowerment scheme has been carefully designed to accommodate more residents and provide opportunities across different sectors.

According to him, the scheme has a budget of N31 billion, which would be spread across multiple categories of grants. “These grants are: farmers’ grant, traders’ grant, MSMEs grant, and skills acquisition grant. Everyone, including members of support groups, have the right to benefit from any of the grants by just accessing the portal,” he said.

Governor Eno explained that the primary goal of the programme is to stimulate the local economy. “The idea is to stimulate our local economy. So, we are putting N1 billion in the budget for each Local Government Area in the 2026 Appropriation Bill,” he added.

He disclosed that once the portal is opened, each Local Government Area will individually access the N1 billion allocation. “I encourage groups and everybody to apply. There are four categories of grants to apply for: farmers’ grant, traders’ grant, SMEs’ grant, and the skills acquisition grant. These grants would be available in each Local Government for people to access,” he said.

The Governor made it clear that grants will be distributed based on Local Government of origin and not necessarily the business location. He said there will be thorough inspections to validate all business locations, just as the state did in previous years. “We will thoroughly verify all your claims before we release the funds,” he stated.

He further explained that all beneficiaries must undergo a refresher programme at the Ibom Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development Centre, ILEDC, before accessing the funds. “This is expected to be a 10-week programme and before you leave or graduate, you will come up with a project on how you will utilize the money,” he explained.

Governor Eno stressed that only those who have proven skills will benefit from the skills acquisition grant. He added that businesses receiving funds will be closely monitored and evaluated to ensure sustainability. “There will be monitoring and evaluation of these businesses to see how productive they are in order to mentor and guide the people involved to ensure sustainability,” he said.

He also assured that the government will not hand over money to any group leader, noting that accountability and transparency must be upheld. “We want to eliminate this idea of godfatherism; the impression that you must know somebody before you access Government grants. Much as it lies within my power, we will reduce this issue to the barest minimum,” he assured.

The Governor also highlighted the role of support groups during the election period but noted that they do not have any special entitlement to the state’s resources. “Support Groups are social groups that volunteered to support a candidate whom they believe would provide good services, ensure accountability and transparency. I was elected to cater for the entire people of Akwa Ibom State, not individual groups. I truly appreciate the groups for their support but they shouldn’t see themselves entitled to the State’s budget,” he stated.

He encouraged every citizen, especially those without any political affiliation, to take advantage of the opportunities. “Let us allow the generality of Akwa Ibomites; people that have nobody to also access these grants to better their lives and those of their families. No particular group or groups will have an exclusive right to these programmes. They are for every Akwa Ibom indigene irrespective of their social status,” he said.

Borno Gov to Empower Youths with Vocational Skills

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has directed the development of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen vocational education across the three senatorial zones of the state.

The Governor gave the directive on Monday while receiving the report on repositioning technical and vocational education in Borno at the council chamber.

According to Zulum, the new plan is aimed at empowering young people by equipping them with the right skills to meet the needs of industries and boost economic growth. He stressed that technical and vocational institutions must design their programs in a way that addresses the growing gap between education and industry.

“The mismatch between our graduates and the labour market is deep, and if we want to address that, we should ensure that a robust technical and vocational education is established,” Zulum said.

He further explained that although progress has been made in providing vocational skills to the youth, more still needs to be done. “We have achieved a lot in providing vocational skills to our youth; however, along the way, we felt that we are still not doing enough for this. We decided to constitute this committee to reposition the technical and vocational education in Borno State,” the Governor added.

Presenting the committee’s report earlier, its Chairman, Alhaji Goni Ibrahim, said the review was conducted through site visits, stakeholder consultations, and comparative studies.

Meanwhile, Zulum also instructed the Ministry of Education to integrate technical and vocational education into Sangaya Schools. He said, “I am happy to note that the Executive Secretary of the Sangaya Education Board is here. I have instructed the Commissioner of Education to liaise with you to consider introducing technical and vocational education in our Sangaya schools.”

The Governor commended the Commissioner of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe, saying, “I want to commend the leadership of the commissioner of Education, for all the good works that he has been doing.”
