TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited, in collaboration with Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, has launched the 2026 edition of the VIA Safe Mobility for Young People programme, reinforcing its commitment to road safety education among vulnerable schoolchildren.

The initiative, backed by the TotalEnergies Foundation, will engage 600 students under the age of 18 across 30 public secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos and Rivers States. It aims to promote safer road practices while addressing mobility challenges faced by children in high-risk environments.

Building on outcomes recorded in 2025, the new phase places stronger emphasis on inclusivity, particularly targeting children who walk long distances to school, navigate congested roads, or are often overlooked in safety-focused interventions. The programme encourages participants to identify risks within their communities and express them through creative channels such as art, music, poetry and drama, while proposing practical solutions.

Speaking at the launch, Acting General Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility at TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited, Mrs Moyosola Areola, said the initiative extends beyond awareness into active youth participation.

“The VIA Safe Mobility for Young People programme goes beyond teaching road safety; it is about empowering young people to understand their environment and take responsibility for safer journeys,” she said.

She noted that the renewed focus on inclusion ensures that no child is excluded from benefiting, particularly those most exposed to road-related risks.

“By giving students the knowledge and platform to act, we are raising a generation that will champion safer and more inclusive mobility in their communities,” she added.

Globally, the VIA programme has been implemented in 43 countries, reaching over 924,000 young people, while contributing to key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including health, quality education, sustainable cities and partnerships.

In Nigeria, implementation is handled by the GreenLight Initiative in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps and relevant education authorities.

The programme will run through the academic year, ending with exhibitions and recognition of student-led projects designed to improve road safety outcomes within their communities.
