Delta State Profiling Herdsmen to Improve Security

The Delta State Government has begun a new initiative to profile herdsmen and cattle owners operating across the state. This step aims to reduce growing tensions and violent clashes between farmers and herders, while boosting local agricultural development and rural safety.

Chief Jeffrey Azagba, Special Adviser to the Governor on Livestock and Inter-Ethnic Relations, shared this development during a meeting with the Delta State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN). He highlighted the increasing concerns over armed herdsmen and their involvement in attacks across some communities.

“It is worrisome that armed herdsmen are causing havoc in some communities,” Azagba stated. “Profiling them will help identify the bad eggs and ensure peace in our communities.”

He also encouraged MACBAN’s leadership to compile and submit a complete list of their members. According to him, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori remains focused on strengthening peace, agriculture, and internal security.

“Delta State is an agrarian state. We must scale up agricultural production without the fear of insecurity,” he said. “Anyone aiding or abetting criminal activities should either relocate or be prepared to face the full weight of the law.”

MACBAN’s State Secretary, Mustapha Suleiman, thanked the government for involving them and assured full cooperation.

“We appreciate the government’s approach and will work hand in hand to ensure a peaceful coexistence,” Suleiman said.

Abia State Approves Lecturers Recruitment for ABSU

0

In a major step to strengthen education in Abia State, the Abia State Government (ABSG) has approved the recruitment of new lecturers into Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu. This move is aimed at filling key academic positions in essential departments across the university. The government also approved the purchase of modern engineering equipment worth N800 million for the university, showing a strong commitment to technological advancement and quality education.

These decisions were made during the weekly State Executive Council meeting held at Government House, Umuahia, and chaired by Governor Alex Otti. Speaking to journalists, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, explained that the new lecturers would help fill gaps in critical courses, ensuring that ABSU maintains high standards of teaching and learning.

Kanu also shared that the Governor has followed through on his promise to renovate the Male Hostel at ABSU. According to him, “The renovation of the Male Hostel is almost completed and will be ready by May.” He added that work has also started on new 5,000-capacity hostels, which will greatly improve accommodation for students.

In another development, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has released the results of the October/November 2024 accreditation exercise. ABSU received full accreditation for several major programmes including Law, Agriculture, Mass Communication, Educational Management, and Planning. This accreditation not only boosts the university’s reputation but also makes it more attractive to prospective students and employers alike.

The ABSG is also improving conditions at the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic. Staff who had not been promoted since 2008 have now been promoted. “It is instructive to note that this is the first promotion exercise in the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic since 2008, making it a better morale booster for the institution,” Prince Kanu said.

Another positive development is the ongoing payment of arrears of salaries owed to sacked and resigned staff. This is a key step in restoring trust between the institution and its former employees. Kanu confirmed that the Governor approved this payment.

On academic performance, the polytechnic also recorded excellent results in the 2nd National Institute of Science, Laboratory, and Technology modular practical exams. All 164 students passed in phase 1, while 157 out of 158 students passed in phase 2. “That indicates a success rate of 99%,” Kanu stated, describing it as a strong indicator of academic quality.

The polytechnic has also introduced an online clearance platform to simplify the clearance process for students. This innovation removes the need for physical presence and saves time for students. Kanu said the school is also reviewing its curriculum to include trending courses like Artificial Intelligence, which positions the school for global competitiveness and relevance in the tech-driven world.

In another development, a panel has been inaugurated to investigate the activities of the recently suspended Provost of ASCETA, with construction projects still ongoing in the institution.

Kanu also revealed that 5,300 teachers who passed a recent recruitment exercise have been approved for employment. A new round of recruitment will begin soon. “The portal will be opened in the next couple of days for the second batch of teachers’ recruitment exercise,” he announced.

These developments are clear signs of the state’s focus on quality education, innovation, and employment, making Abia a preferred destination for academic growth.

Pure Water Sachets, PET Bottles Not Banned – LASG Clarifies

May 20, 2025 – The Lagos State Government has confirmed that the new single use plastics ban coming into effect on July 1 does not include pure water sachets, PET bottles, or nylon bags thicker than 40 microns. This statement was made by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in response to false information spreading online.

Wahab explained that the ban only targets specific plastic products like styrofoam food packs, polystyrene cups, plastic straws, cutlery, and thin nylon bags under 40 microns. “Our position has not changed,” he said. “These items cause serious harm to our environment and are not recyclable through regular waste channels.”

To show how serious the state is about tackling plastic pollution, Lagos has launched a Plastic Waste Management Fund. This fund is supported by producers, importers, and Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs). It will be used to reduce plastic waste and support better waste disposal systems.

This ban has been in the works since January 2024, and the state gave an 18-month moratorium to allow everyone time to adjust. Now, with the deadline approaching, enforcement will begin as planned.

The move is part of the government’s strategy to build a cleaner and safer environment while encouraging more eco-friendly packaging alternatives. By focusing on high-impact waste items, the government hopes to reduce flooding, improve drainage, and promote sustainable waste management in Lagos.

Residents are urged to stay informed and stop spreading misleading claims about the ban. The government is only banning the plastics that are most harmful to the city’s environment.

10 Nigerian Universities Accepting Low JAMB Scores

JAMB is over now, but seeing a low JAMB score is heartbreaking. Many students studied hard, did their best, yet got results that didn’t show their efforts. A lot of students complained about JAMB glitches and technical issues that affected their scores, which JAMB acknowledged and responded to. If you’re reading this, you probably feel frustrated, and maybe even confused. But now is not the time to give up. Instead of waiting another year, there are universities in Nigeria that accept low JAMB scores.

If your score is between 120 and 160, you still have a real chance of getting admission. Some schools have adjusted their cut-off marks to help students who scored below 180. Let’s look at 10 Nigerian universities that accept low JAMB scores so you can start planning your admission this year.

1. Federal University Gusau (FUGUS), Zamfara State

FUGUS accepts low JAMB scores for many of its programs. Courses in the arts, social sciences, and education are often open to students who scored 140 or above. This university is one of the affordable options in the North with a stable academic calendar.

2. Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano

Also known as Northwest University, this school accepts students with scores from 140 and above for some courses. It’s state-owned and offers various programmes in science, education, and social sciences. It’s a good choice for those looking for a serious academic environment.

3. Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG)

BASUG is friendly to students who didn’t meet the high JAMB cut-off. Some departments accept scores as low as 140, especially for courses in arts and education. It’s a fast-growing university that many students overlook.

4. Federal University, Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA), Katsina State

FUDMA has become a safe option for students with scores from 150 upwards. Many students who applied with low scores still gained admission into courses like political science, education, and agricultural sciences.

5. Taraba State University, Jalingo

Taraba State University is known to accept low JAMB scores and is open to indigenous and non-indigenous students. Cut-off marks are flexible depending on the course. It’s a peaceful learning environment, and tuition is affordable.

6. Gombe State University (GSU), Gombe

GSU accepts low JAMB scores, especially for arts, social science, and education courses. If you have a score of 140 and above, you still stand a good chance here.

7. Federal University, Birnin Kebbi (FUBK)

FUBK accepts a wide range of JAMB scores for several courses. In past years, candidates with 140 or 150 have been admitted into less competitive departments. It’s one of the Northern universities worth considering.

8. Sokoto State University (SSU)

Sokoto State University offers admission to candidates with scores starting from 140 in courses like education, sociology, and history. Their admission process is simple, and the school fees are pocket-friendly.

9. Adamawa State University, Mubi

ADSU is one of the universities that often lower their JAMB cut-off for various courses. Candidates with 140 and above can still secure admission if they apply early and wisely.

10. Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA)

KSUSTA is known to accept students with JAMB scores around 150. It’s a tech-based school, but they offer courses in other fields like education and agriculture that don’t require high scores.

What Should You Do Next?

You don’t have to give up just because of a low JAMB score. Here are simple steps to move forward:

  • Apply for a change of institution on the JAMB portal to one of the schools listed above.
  • If necessary, choose less competitive courses such as education.
  • Follow up on the schools’ admission portals to know when their post-UTME or screening form is out. Some will use JAMB CAPS to offer you admission, as long as you have done your change of institution on JAMB.
  • Prepare for any screening or post-UTME exams, even if they’re simple or based on O’Level results.
  • Make sure your WAEC or NECO subjects are related to your course.
  • Join online forums or Facebook groups for students of those schools to learn from others.

This list is a helpful starting point. There’s still hope to gain admission this year, don’t lose your drive. Use your low JAMB score wisely and act fast.
