LASPPPA Tells Lagos Residents to Get Planning Permits Before Building

The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) has reminded residents, developers, and property owners across the state to obtain planning permits before starting any construction work. According to the General Manager of LASPPPA, Tpl. Kehinde Osinaike, securing a planning permit is not only a legal requirement but also a step toward building a safer and more organised city.

Tpl. Osinaike explained that planning permits play a key role in maintaining the Lagos State Master Plan. These permits help control where homes, offices, schools, hospitals, churches, and even roads are built. Without these permits, there is a higher chance of unplanned development and problems like overcrowding, poor road access, and reduced property value.

He stressed that planning permits support legal construction processes and help protect property investments. They also ensure that new buildings match zoning regulations and contribute to proper land use across the state. With a valid permit, property owners can avoid fines, court cases, and even the risk of building demolitions.

Tpl. Olarinde Iyiola, the Head of LASPPPA’s Monitoring and Compliance Unit, also stated that permits improve safety and quality. Structures approved by LASPPPA are more likely to follow building codes, reduce environmental risks, and last longer.

He added that buildings with proper documentation often have higher resale value, as buyers feel confident in their legal status and construction quality.

LASPPPA officials emphasised that following proper planning guidelines supports sustainable development.

The agency is encouraging all stakeholders to always obtain a planning permit before starting any building project, whether it’s residential, commercial, or industrial. This helps prevent illegal developments and keeps the city growing in the right direction, as part of the state government’s long-term urban development goals.

0

In a major step toward improving youth health in Nigeria, the Federal Government has launched a new campaign called Yo! Health. This youth-centered public health initiative aims to give young Nigerians better access to accurate health information and help them live healthier lives.

The Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, introduced the initiative at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja. He said that Yo! Health is a response to the increasing health issues facing young people today. It focuses on promoting good mental health, sexual and reproductive health, physical fitness, and preventive care. The program also provides information on common diseases and encourages the use of health insurance, especially for those in the informal sector.

According to the Minister, young people must stay healthy if they want to fulfil their goals and make real contributions to society. That’s why Yo! Health is built around six important areas: mental health, drug and substance abuse, communicable diseases, health insurance, non-communicable diseases, and sexual and reproductive health. Each area was chosen based on real data and the experiences shared by young Nigerians across different regions.

The initiative is also guided by four major goals: increasing awareness, empowering the youth, influencing policy, and encouraging young people to participate in planning and decision-making. By giving the youth a voice, the government hopes to make the program more effective and relevant to their needs.

Yo! Health is a joint effort that brings together the Federal Ministries of Health and Women Affairs, along with private sector health stakeholders, international development agencies, civil society groups, and youth-led organisations.

This type of collaboration is expected to help strengthen the health sector, especially in areas like youth mental health services, health education, and affordable healthcare for students and young workers.

Comrade Olawande praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for supporting youth-focused initiatives and called on more organisations to join the campaign. He believes this health campaign will lead to a stronger and more productive generation.

Delta State DELCOM COOP to Create Jobs, Boost Local Food Supply, Others

Under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s leadership, Delta State is making major progress in agriculture with a smart and focused move. The Delta State Commodities Cooperative, known as DELCOM COOP, is helping to transform the rural economy through oil palm farming. This project supports youth empowerment, job creation, and sustainable farming in line with the state’s MORE Agenda.

DELCOM COOP is not just another government programme. It is a well-planned platform created to help farmers and agribusinesses grow. The main target is the oil palm sector.

The government is forming cooperative clusters that allow smallholder farmers and youth to join hands and work together. This system helps manage land better and encourages data-driven decisions.

Delta once had a strong oil palm industry, and this initiative is bringing it back to life. By using the Land Bank to find good farmland, the government can give land to farmers in a fair and open way. The state also provides improved oil palm seedlings, technical training, and encourages private investors to set up processing factories. These actions help increase oil palm production and boost agro-based industries.

The Agricultural Land Bank is a big part of the plan. It is a system that lists available farming land across the state. Farmers and cooperatives can now get land without stress, which also cuts down land disputes. For agribusiness investors, the Land Bank makes it easier to find land for large-scale farming.

DELCOM COOP collects and uses important agric data. This includes land use, crop yields, and information about farmers. With this data, the government can plan better policies and track the success of different projects. This makes agriculture more efficient and helps target job creation efforts.

FG Launches Nigerian Climate Investment Platform (NCIP) Initiative to Raise $500 Million for Green Projects

The Federal Government has introduced a new initiative called the Nigerian Climate Investment Platform (NCIP), aimed at securing $500 million in climate finance. This move is designed to support green infrastructure, climate resilience, and sustainable development projects across Nigeria. The launch of NCIP shows the government’s commitment to clean energy and green growth.

The announcement came after a high-level meeting in Abuja between the Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun, and key players from the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), and the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The goal of this collaboration is to build a platform that can attract climate funding from both local and international investors.

According to Mr. Edun, NSIA has a solid track record and is well-positioned to lead this initiative. He mentioned the importance of tapping into global green finance to support key sectors like agriculture, infrastructure, and digital innovation.

With global economic pressure, Nigeria must make use of all available opportunities to boost export competitiveness and strengthen the economy through sustainable means.

This platform has been carefully developed with input from different stakeholders. The Director-General of NSIA, Mr. Aminu Umar-Sadiq, said the challenge given by the Minister led them to work with the GCF and local partners to create a structure that attracts investment. This cooperation ensures that the NCIP aligns with international climate goals while remaining suitable for Nigeria’s needs.

The Green Climate Fund, represented by Mr. Soji Omisore, emphasized the need for a dedicated focus on Nigeria. He stated that no existing project under GCF is solely focused on Nigeria, and this needs to change. The NCIP is a major step toward creating that change, offering Nigeria a chance to become a priority in global climate finance efforts.

Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, Director-General of the NCCC, also pointed out the need to improve Nigeria’s access to international climate funds. She noted that smaller countries have multiple accredited entities with the GCF, and urged institutions like NSIA and NIRSAL to pursue similar recognition. Gaining this accreditation is crucial for unlocking large-scale green funding.

The NCIP fits into Nigeria’s broader plan to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and become a leader in the green economy. By raising $500 million in green finance, the country can support critical sectors and build a stronger, climate-resilient economy.

This platform not only supports Nigeria’s climate goals but also opens up new economic opportunities through green energy, sustainable agriculture, and eco-friendly infrastructure.

FG Clears Air on NELFUND Loan Deductions and Charges, Says No Missing Funds

The Nigerian government has reassured students and the public that no money has been wrongly taken from student loans provided by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). This announcement was made by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, during a high-level meeting in Abuja with Vice Chancellors, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Managing Director of NELFUND.

Recall that there were NELFUND Student Loan Complaints.

Recent rumours in the media had raised concerns about missing student loan funds. However, after careful investigation, Dr. Alausa confirmed that there were no signs of fraud or mismanagement. Instead, the issues that were noticed had to do with delays in communication between NELFUND, universities, and the students who are meant to receive the loans.

To solve this problem, Dr. Alausa announced that a special Committee has been formed to create clear rules and timelines for how funds should be disbursed and communicated.

One major task for the Committee is to make sure that university charges are listed in a standard way. This will help prevent confusion over what part of the loan is used for which expense. It will also stop students from thinking that hidden charges are being removed from their loans.

The Committee’s work will include defining exactly when NELFUND should send funds to universities, how quickly the schools should notify students, and when students should expect to have access to the money. A reliable communication system will be introduced so that students get important updates through SMS, emails, or phone calls.

The Minister also reminded everyone that federal universities in Nigeria do not charge tuition fees. However, other charges like registration or accommodation fees still apply. These fees must now be made clear and reasonable, with no room for hidden deductions or misunderstanding. This update is expected to support the Federal Government’s promise to improve trust and fairness in student loan disbursement.

The Committee is expected to submit their report in three weeks. Afterwards, the Ministry of Education will release full guidelines that all universities and institutions must follow when it comes to handling student loan funds. This effort is part of the government’s plan to improve higher education financing in Nigeria and make it more transparent and student-friendly.

Also speaking at the meeting, NELFUND’s Managing Director, Mr. Akintunde Sawyer, shared progress on the new online loan application platform. This digital system makes it easier for eligible students across federal and state institutions to apply and manage their loans.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, encouraged NELFUND to do even more to reach out to students who need the loans and to make sure the loan process is fair and efficient for everyone.

FG Opens Modern Smart Divisional Police Station in Mpape

The Federal Government has officially opened a modern smart Divisional Police Station in Katampe, Mpape, Abuja. This development is aimed at improving internal security and ensuring the safety of lives and property in the area. The commissioning was carried out by the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia.

This newly completed smart police station, built by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), is a response to the growing demand for better police infrastructure in fast-developing communities like Mpape. With the steady population growth in the area, the need for a well-equipped and responsive law enforcement facility had become urgent. Now, the people of Mpape have a secure and modern structure designed to support day-to-day police operations and community relations.

The Honourable Minister described the project as a major achievement in Nigeria’s broader effort to strengthen the country’s internal security system. He highlighted that this police station is part of the Federal Government’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focusing on security sector reforms and enhancing public safety.

The new Divisional Police Station includes advanced features that make it a smart facility. It is equipped with CCTV surveillance for 24/7 monitoring, a perimeter fence for security, solar power to ensure uninterrupted electricity, and overhead water tanks for constant water supply.

These features are designed to make the station fully functional regardless of external disruptions. Such infrastructure contributes to the vision of a more responsive and efficient police system in Nigeria.

According to the Minister, this station is not just a building; it represents a new way of delivering security services. It gives police officers a professional working environment and promotes better engagement with residents. By providing these kinds of smart police stations across Nigeria, the government is laying the foundation for stronger law enforcement and improved public trust.

Senator Gaidam called on officers who will be working at the station to maintain the highest standards of conduct. He stressed the importance of fairness, professionalism, and respect for human rights in their daily operations. He reminded them that they are the face of law and order in Mpape and should always carry themselves with integrity.

The Minister also spoke to the people of Mpape, saying that the new police station belongs to the community. He encouraged residents to support the officers, cooperate with law enforcement, and protect the facility. Community policing, he noted, works best when citizens and the police work hand in hand.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu, also spoke at the event. He expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for his strong leadership and consistent support of police reforms. Sheidu noted that the success of this project shows what can happen when the government is focused on its goals and serious about security sector improvement.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Victor Olaiya, received the facility on behalf of the Inspector General of Police. He said the modern police station will inspire officers to do their jobs with pride. He urged them to take good care of the station and its equipment, treating it as a symbol of their responsibility to protect and serve.

Also present at the event was the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Abubakar Aliyu. He explained that the new station is part of a wider plan to use sustainable energy solutions across government facilities. According to him, the partnership between the REA and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund is focused on providing reliable, clean, and affordable power to support smart police infrastructure throughout the country.

Aliyu pointed out that this collaboration is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed last year. The Mpape project marks the first step in rolling out energy-efficient, smart security infrastructure across Nigeria. By leveraging solar energy, the project reduces reliance on unstable power sources and ensures that the station can operate effectively at all times.

With this smart station in place, Mpape residents can look forward to quicker response times, better police-community engagement, and a stronger sense of safety. The government also plans to build similar smart stations across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, bringing modern policing closer to more people and making sure that law and order are strengthened nationwide.
